HWÆT WORLD: how should I generate and display graphs of prime numbers?

I haven't programmed much for years. Now I want to play around with different ways of visualising the Ulam Spiral and I'd like suggestions for the right tools to use. I want to generate or load arrays of (say) 100,000 numbers, depict them on a 2- or 3-d graph, and move the lighting and/or viewing angle to give an impression of depth. Details inside. [more inside]
