Don't look into the light!

I currently have an iMac 24" (early 2008). If you are acustom to the iMac you'll know that the brightness setting is extremely high.

Unfortunately everytime I boot the computer up the brightness settings reset and I have to go through the hassle of lowering the brightness.

Why is the keyboard/mac doing this? and can it be fixed?

How many sunrises could you see in 24 hours? Lets assume for the purposes of this question you have access to a fast jet that can land wherever you want, how many do you think it is theoretically possible to see within a twenty four hour period?

Jack Bauer's Ring Tone

What is Jack Bauer's cell phone ring tone? I'm on a quest for a new ringtone for my phone, and having a preference for things that aren't music but still have some sort of dorkiness to them, I've decided that I would love to have the ring tone that Jack Bauer (and tons of other people on 24) use.

I'm NOT talking about the CTU ringtone, the old "dootdoot, DEEEdoot" which you can find in a billion and a half places on the internet; I already have that, but it seems somewhat... passe since there is no longer a CTU. Also, everybody and their mother has that ringer.

I've heard the cell phone ringtone on other shows, which leads me to believe that it's an actual ringtone on an actual cell phone. If anyone has any idea what it is or (preferably) where I could download it, please help! My phone can do mp3s, so pretty much any file I could convert would be useful.

What kind of birthday cake should I make for my Brother-in Laws 24th birthday. I was thinking of decorating the cake with a Chuck Norris theme. He also likes Rap music,Aikido, working on trucks, Beer, Girls, Texas Country Music, and UFC Fights. I am probably going to make a round or square cake from a cake mix.

Have Chloe Patch Me Through.

How realistic is the exchange of information in the show 24? So obviously, the show's completely unrealistic, but I wonder how close actual technology comes to what we see on the show. If you worked for the most hooked-up intelligence agency in the world - I'm assuming the CIA - and had a team of people devoted solely to getting you information, with the highest level technology available, could you theoretically be as efficient and connected as Jack Bauer is?

Would you be able to have someone "patch you through" instantly; download any maps onto your device; trace any call; intercept messages; tap into surveillence cameras and let you peer in on your pdA; track cars on city streets; and so on?

An exercise in bargain hunting.

Best deal at a 24-Hour Fitness center? I realize that getting a gym membership falls roughly in the realm of negotiating with a used car dealer, so I'm looking for tips in navigating the process; the when, where and how.

Any insight or anecdotes from past experiences would be much appreciated.

An excuse to exchange imacs

How can I convince my accountant and my tax inspectors that I truly do need to buy a new 24" iMac in order to continue being a productive member of society? Because I don't. Please help me lie. Truth is, I do fine with my old 2002 iMac, as all I use it for is for internetting and writing. Apart from that almost ever-present beachball (even with 1G RAM), it serves its purpose damnably well. And yet I must have that dirty, irrational and slightly disloyal Intel widescreen goodness. It's a whorish thing, I admit. I'm a writer by trade so I would welcome a tax-deductible excuse, perhaps in the way of greatly enhanced research and word processing capabilities. (Don't make me laugh?) Or, failing that, just an excuse for my own purposes. Any ideas? Sympathy? Advice? And, yes, exactly what set-up should I get? Many thanks for any support, one way or the other.

I need a 24" wide combo oven/microwave.

I need a 24" wide combo oven / microwave (stacked). I've got a 24"w x 47"h space (as deep as it needs to be, can also be made a bit taller) in which to put a combo microwave and oven. I've seen them before, but can't find anyone who makes one now. GE has a double oven, but it doesn't seem to include a microwave. Any ideas?

Where do photo journalists hide their stash?

Some people on the media platform took photos or video of me and the sign I was holding at D.C. on Saturday in the Ellipse. Where can I look for this picture/video? Generally, how does this work? I would assume the people on the platform work for a media company, like C-SPAN. Should I write to C-SPAN and ask for footage? All of it, or be specific? Or, perhaps they're freelancers, in which case, where do they file their media for it to be searched and indexed by organizations looking to buy the images for reproduction?

Did

The show "24" has taken a lot of heat lately, mentioned recently in this Mefi thread and it got me to wondering.... I've watched every episode of the last 3 seasons. And this season, with all the controversy about the show's "negative portrayal of Muslims", I noticed something:

Not one of the characters this season has been identified as Muslim. Aside from the Araz family being identified as Turkish, not one reference to Allah, Mujahedin, or U.S. presence in the Middle East has been illustrated. Everything has been about "our struggle" and "our cause" and other vague statements.

Can anyone recall a specific instance where any of the bad guys in the show are referred to as Muslims or Muslim extremists? Or that anything in the plots had anything to do with Islam at all? Am I nuts or of faulty memory here? Because I get the impression that people assumed this was a Muslim terrorist cell without the show actually stating it. And in my mind, that changes the way the show should be handling things.

Epidemiology

I've been watching 24 this season and it has gotten me interested in epidemiology. Can anybody suggest a good layperson's resource, either on the web or in print about the topic? I'm looking for information on how diseases spread and how the situation gets out of control. I've done my googlework, but most of the stuff seems to be to advanced for my current understanding or not very informative. Case studies and response projections would be awesome.
