How can I use my host's SMTP to send mail when I have my address set to forward incoming mail?

How can I use my name@my-domain.com email address to send email, if the same address is set to forward incoming mail to another address? I am using Mac OS 10.5, Mail.app, and an iPhone.

I have a site and domain name -- let's say it's my-domain.com -- hosted by 1and1.com. I use name@my-domain.com as my primary email address, but I have set my host to forward incoming email at that address to a MobileMe account: name@me.com. I want to continue to give out name@my-domain.com as my email address. I want to, for the time being, continue to use MobileMe (name@me.com) for my actual mailbox.

The rub is, because mail that's sent to name@my-domain.com is currently forwarding to name@me.com, any replies I send come from name@me.com. I have tried to set up Mail.app to use my web host's outgoing SMTP server (smtp.1and1.com), using the settings they describe (Port 25, Password authentication, etc), but it does not work; it gives the error "The server stmp.1and1.com cannot be contacted on port 25." I expect this is because I don't have a real "mailbox" set up with the host using that email address, only a forwarder.

So the question: is there any way to have my outgoing mail come from name@my-domain.com? For example, is there maybe a way to set up a @my-domain.com mailbox and have MobileMe go out and pull new messages into my @me.com address? Or can I somehow set up Mail.app to use my host 1and1's SMTP server to send mail, when the same email address is set to forward incoming mail? Or is there another service I can use to make this work?

Cheers, and thanks in advance.

CANCELLING a 1and1 hosting account

Have you CANCELLED your 1and1 account successfully (by success I mean they stopped charging you and they released the domains registered through them)? If so, what steps did you follow?? I haven't started the process yet -- just researching right now -- but I've read a lot of 1and 1 cancellation horror stories here and elsewhere.

my files my files my files come back!

Why are my files suddenly old?! On my 1and1 account, suddenly all of my files reverted to what i suppose is a snapshot of what they were either earlier today or last night, and i've lost a lot of work that i did earlier today. I'm on the phone with their tech support right now, but I have no faith in them - anyone have any tips or clues or ideas?

I can log in to my webmail and send mail, but I can not view the inbox. Is this common? What is the solution?

1and1 Webmail problem: For the last several days, the webmail for my domain at 1and1 has been inaccessible. Specifically, I can log in, and I can send email, but I cannot view my inbox. More inside. For the past several days, webmail access to my domain has been unavailable. Specifically, I am able to log in and send email, but I am generally unable to view my inbox. When I try, I get the following message: "One moment, please. Loading e-mails... If you run into trouble, please use your local mail client."

The screen can stay like that for hours. On the few occassions when, after a very long delay, my inbox has become visible, I get a similar message after trying to check an individual email. I have reproduced this behavior on multiple computers and from multiple networks, using IE 6. Using a local email client is, unfortunately, not an option for many users of this domain.

I have two questions: First, is this specific to my account or are others experiencing similar problems? (I know that, like me, many MeFites grabbed the free promotional domain at 1and1). Second, does anyone know what might be causing this or how it might be resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Is the domain registrar 1and1 reliable?

This is the absolutely LAST time I will ever use the word "domain" in an AskMeFi post, I promise...
Can I trust 1and1 to register my domains?
I got the three-year-free package and they don't have my debit card number yet. I'm registered by godaddy with $8.95 renewals ($7.95 promotion only for new .coms), and 1and1 gets in my face with an offer for 49-cents-a-month ($5.88/year). I don't feel good about doing monthly payments for this, but saving 3 dollars on a dozen domains will save me enough to buy more domains! And, even though I've specified "shut me down before you charge me for overages" to 1and1, I'm still worried about getting hit by surprise charges if they have my debit card number. Whadyathink?
