Macbook Pro vs. PC?

ANOTHER mac vs pc buying mefi post...But not the usual reasons. Help? Thanks! :D I need an upgrade from my $550 laptop that I bought a little over a year ago for DJing. Shits just barely packs enough juice to run Traktor, I also produce and the laptop can't cut through an Ableton work flow past a single synth line, so I'm stuck on my desktop for such work. :)

I'm the one that will be paying for it. Not parents. :D I have a job at a computer repair shop, I like Windows 7 much more than OSX, I would almost certainly nuke and install Windows 7 on it if I end up getting one. Right now I barely have any bank, I'm sitting on about $300. I work 9 hours a week and make $9/hour. I get a check every 2 weeks.

I obviously can't just buy the thing all up front, but after some quick math, I believe i have the means to pay off a 12 month finance. I would buy the thing off of amazon for $1700. I would basically give up a whole check every month to pay for it, which I believe I could manage. My parents would probably chip in every now and then, obviously since this thing will be my "college laptop", they are saving $1000 on me begging them to buy me one. I would then also have 2 laptops both of decent value, and a desktop that I can sell. So...I shouldn't end up in deep shit w/ the sharks. :D

Many computer illiterate people go Mac because they don't know how to take care of a Windows computer. Loads of people that walk into our store and abandon their PCs in favor of a mac because they are fed up with viruses and how slow they get. I could have fixed both easily if they weren't convinced its impossible, but w/e. I see the other positives to buying a Mac, in about 3 years, I can still sell it for a large part of my money back. Try doing that with a PC! :D I can easily get the same thing for about $1000 in 3 years, it will probably drop to about a $500-600 value, while the macbook will sell for around $1500 in the future.

If my resale estimates are a load of shit, or you think I better steer clear of a mac. Say something! :P

I need to do a pro and con list for myself, might as well do it in here. :P

~~~PROS~~~
High resale value
Durable
Will last a long time if I take care of it
Macbook=sexy :P
~~~CONS~~~
Expensive
Won't last as long
Bad resale value
I'm not buying into OSX
I have to finance for a mac.

Talk to me, whats your take? Thank you so much. :D

Help me shop, please

I'm female, US ~size 12, ample in chest and hip area, relatively smaller waist, and I want to shop for clothes that are flattering and professional. I need to get more flattering and professional clothing.

Some problems I have:

- I get flustered spending more than a half hour in a crowded store trying on clothes

-it's hard to find shirts that fit both on the top and around the waist (I don't want to wear baggy shirts or be spilling out of my top)

-I don't like heeled shoes but want to find some dressy and comfortable shoes (I like boots and flat shoes)

-I am not based in US but do have access to some Western brands: H & M (where I usually go); Zara, and a few others, but not many American brands. However, I can get stuff on trips to the US if you want to suggest some US clothing stores.

-Also, what kinds of cuts are flattering and professional for my body type? How do I determine what clothing items are office-wearable?

Thanks!

Laptop case compatibility

Will the lower exterior case and optical drive from a mac powerbook G4 12inch 867 MHz be compatible with a mac powerbook G4 12inch 1.5Ghz? My powerbook G4 12inch aluminum 1.5Ghz has some issues. It is going to need a new optical drive and lower exterior case and power adapter (looooong story). Costs a lot to get the replacement parts individually. I found someone nearby offering a powerbook g4 12inch aluminum 867MHz for cheaper than ordering individual pieces would be. Before I go rearranging my schedule to see it, I'm wondering if the case and optical drive are compatible?

Help Identify a Song

Help identifying a (probably free/bumper music) song (is this even possible). The song can be found in two places:
http://homepage.mac.com/littlelovers/index.html?_startPage=37

and in Season 2 Episode 6 of 12 oz mouse:
http://www.tv.com/12-oz.-mouse/auraphull/episode/874838/summary.html

it plays during the credits, and is a slightly different version of the first link.

Can anyone help me identify the producer of this song?

Inexpensive fluorescent lantern/lamp with 12 volt option?

Fluorescent lantern suggestions for emergency home use? We've endured a total of 14 days without electricity in the past six months due to a wind storm and an ice storm. I have a portable 12V battery with "cigarette lighter" ports, a powered USB port and built-in LED floodlight, and of course, several flashlights. But next time I want a fluorescent lantern to compliment the battery. Trouble is, it's very hard to find a lantern that can also be powered by an external 12V source - most use internal D cells and that's it. Coleman makes a rechargeable one that can be charged (and presumably used) with an external 12V source, but I don't want to introduce the inefficiencies that I associate with the charging circuit. And rechargeable batteries typically have a shelf-life. And it's a little 'spensive.

Any suggestions? Don't want to spend too much...<$25.

PS: Should I just buy a 12V fluorescent bulb with built-in ballast and rig it up to a regular lamp with a homemade power adapter? Also, hacking an eight D-cell lantern to work with an external source has occurred to me, but I want to avoid that if possible.

How do I restore iPhone 1.2/2.0 to 1.1.4?

I sloppily upgraded my 1.1.4 iPhone to 1.2 (2.0 Beta). The phone is locked and I cannot restore through iTunes. I only have a Windows machine at the moment. Can I get it back without going to the AT&T/Apple Store? I didn't realize this was an illegal, bad thing to do. Nor did I realize you couldn't at least reset to the earlier firmware (which I have as an IPSW file). Is there anyway I can set it so that I can just get it back to the original out-of-the-box (1.1.4) state? Apparently I can unlock it via Pwnage with a Mac, will this work through VMWare Workstation and Tiger? Is USB 2.0 support good enough for that? Is there anyway I can do it on Windows Vista or XP?

Also if I bring it back to the store do they just reset it there? Is it a big deal?

I'm trying to find usable graphic files with these specific images. I'm teaching young kids about the Old Testament, and am using different visual aids to help teach about the 12 Tribes. The picture linked above shows *exactly* the images I want to find. A local church used these in a VBS packet this summer, but I'm hoping to avoid having to track somebody down...

dubplate madness

djFilter: Looking for some direction and pointers getting my start as bar dj. I'm looking to get a start in DJ'ing around town primarily playing the rounds in the trendier (see also 'dive') bars of downtown. My current home setup is a single Stanton t.80 with a Stanton SMX.201 2 channel mixer. I'm going to pick up another Stanton soon to try my hand at live mixing.

Now here is where I am a bit lost; do venues typically supply the tables and mixer in your DJ'ing experiences and if so, how big a deal is it adapting to each venues setup? How do I go about getting some time at a bar to prove my worth? (I'm guessing a recorded full mix?)

Any horror stories or advice for someone looking to ply his vinyl collection to the inebriated masses would be much appreciated. thanks

Pesky Powerbook power/pointer problems

Mac NotWorkingLikeItShouldFilter: PB 12”: i) Pointer disappears upon closing mac after connected to video projector/monitor. ii) Battery not registering charge loss – machine shuts down unexpectedly. Haylp!
Unrelated Problems:

1) I use an external monitor and video projection a lot – both connect through a little white VGA adapter that fits into the mini-DVI slot. When I remove this connector and shut my mac, it sleeps as designed. When I open it up again, the pointer (desktop arrow) disappears. The only way I can get the pointer back is by resetting (logging of doesn’t do any good) Suggestions to regain the pointer without reset? This happens sometimes without sleep too!

2) I bought a new battery from newer technology. Despite me running it down ad charging it up fresh, the mac never knows what charge the battery has: always displays 100%. Consequently I’ll be using the mac on battery power when BAM! The power to the screen, or worse, the computer will just switch off. I’ve tried resetting the power management unit, and tried running the battery down and charging it fresh (following discharge procedure), but the power indicator always reads 100% when running on battery. Note: when the battery’s empty, the mac seems to know that it’s at 0% and shows it charging up from 0->100%.

I have a 12” Powerbook, G4, 1Mhz/768MB, OS X 10.3.9. All updates installed.

Information about Microsoft

Information about Microsoft and their plans for Office 12 I'm having a hard time finding some information about Microsoft. I am looking for a list of ALL their partners at the Global ISV level. I think there are 34 of them but I can't find a page that lists them all. Also, Microsoft has listed some functionality that will be available in Office 12 and the next version of SharePoint but I'm hoping there is a blog or mailing list that will keep track of Office 12 functionality as new information is released. Any help is appreciated.
