hiding from spammers

Does obscuring email address and telelphone numbers using hexadecimal notation or other techniques in the source code still inhibit spambots? And does blocking IP addresses that the spambots use have any effect?

Low impact 10 day loop hike in lower 48?

My brother and I are contemplating a week to 10-day long loop ultralight hike. Ideally, it would be somewhere in the lower-48 states, and be casual, but NO mountains, so suggestions like the Appalachian or the PCT are out. It doesn't have to be wilderness, but ideally, we'd be camping all the way.

butchering wilbur

Selling my own books through amazon

Tactics for selling books online? Since I've pretty much adopted ebooks, I've begun to liquidate my dust-collecting dead-tree library. Rather than just donating them to a charity or dumping them on the local county library, I've started listing the more valuable books (more than a dollar) on Amazon. I've had some immediate successes, enough to prompt me to keep entering in the ISBN numbers. So now I have a few questions...

California gubernatorial race poll numbers

Was there a single event that happened on or shortly before September 7th, 2010, that caused Brown's poll numbers to start to rise and Whitman's numbers correspondingly fall in the current gubernatorial race for US state of California?

New House -- Who is at fault?

So my wife and I settled on a new house a couple months ago. We did our due diligence, had the house inspected by a licensed and reputable home inspector, bought the house under the guidance of a real estate agent with 20+ years experience buying and selling homes in our area. Nevertheless, the county sheriff came knocking on our door last week.

how to restore a painting

Art Restoration : I have an old oil-painting that is pretty grungy due to decades of living with smokers and hanging near a fireplace. I'd like to get it cleaned, but I don't know the first thing about a) finding a restorer, and b) what I can expect to pay to have the work done.

YOINK!

Yoink! John Walkenbach (J-walk) wrote a cute little thing for his site about something called Wifi Speed Spray. Recently he was alerted that not only had someone completely stolen his idea and put it in a ebay auction, they took the artwork and all. When John contacted the seller to ask him to cut it out, the guy refused, claiming that John couldn't prove he was the author. What does one do in the information age when someone completely rips you off, claims credit for what you wrote, and refuses to admit any wrong doing?

rotating and microwave ovens

So, if your microwave oven has a carousel, is it necessary to stop the cooking halfway through and rotate the food, like most prepared food packages suggest? And do you place the item in the middle or slightly off to one side of the carousel?

Firefox DNS Issues

re: Firefox ... lately, I've been having weird DNS issues. I don't recall it ever happened before I switched to firefox, so I assume it's to blame, though that may be a red herring. What happens is this : I have several pages listed in my homepage setting, with each url separated by a '|'. 12 of em to be exact. More than occasionally, anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of them come up with a "server cannot be found" error. Sometimes, if I wait for all of the tabs to open, and then try to load the previously not found page, it'll open successfully. Other times, it just doesn't come up no matter how or when I refresh. I've tried resetting my nameserver settings on my router -- both hard-coded nameserver spec. and 'get nameserver information from isp,' but the problem persists.

Food-based Business

So I'm thinking of starting a new small business... it involves food, though. My idea is to make a very small range of products -- say, baked goods -- and sell it at farmer's markets and upscale grocery stores. Since it involves food, I imagine I have to jump through more hoops than I might otherwise, but I don't even begin to know where to look about what all is involved. Health inspections? Licenses? Anyone have any experience in this sort of thing?

Where canI get good custom coffee mugs?

Aside from cafepress, does anyone know of a good company that will print my images on decent sized coffee mugs? I've been informed that even the biggest coffee mug at cafe press a) isn't big enough and b) doesn't keep coffee very hot. Looking for alternatives. Ideally, each piece shouldn't cost me more than $10 or $12 each. And I'm looking for short runs ... no more than 2 or 3 at a time. Oh. And a pony.

Javascript Quandry

Javascript quandry. I'm tasked with the unenviable task of implementing another designers web design for one of my clients. In order to make the maintenance of the site easier to handle, I'm putting most of the navigational elements in a single document that will be server-side included. The fiddley bit is that the design calls for the navigational element for the particular page to be highlighted for that particular page. So if I'm on the CONTACT page, the menu element for CONTACT is highlighted. This would be easy enough to handle if the code for each page were a part of each page, but because I'm using a common file, it makes it trickier. (more inside)

Need New Tires

It's time to retire! So what are the ins and outs of buying new tires for my car? To me, one tire pretty much looks like another, and aside from "high performance" and "retreads," I don't really know what makes one tire better than another.

Does anyone know of good public torrent trackers that don't require end-user logins?

I'm convinced that until they figure out a way to make publishing a torrent file easier, bittorrent will never become completely popular. So I have torrentmaker. I have a valid announcement url. I can create the torrent file easily enough but I can't seem to find a reliable tracker to upload the file to to make it publically available. It seems like most tracker sites require people to log in in order to download the file, and that's just a pain in the ass. Short of setting up my own tracker, anyone know of good public trackers that don't require end-user logins? (And that don't have obnoxious popunders, like &$%#*&@ing Suprnova)?

is the restaurant brand stuff I buy in the store the same as what's in the restaurant?

A browse through the frozen food aisle of my local grocery store shows me all kinds of prepared foods from well known restaurant chains. Buffalo Wings from T.G.I.Fridays, BBQ Chicken Pizza from California Pizza Kitchen... what I want to know is, when I go to the actual restaurant chain and order the same products, are they just doing what I'd be doing if I bought the store-bought product? Is the "chef" at California Pizza Kitchen actually making my pizza to-order, or is he pulling a frozen pie out of his freezer, and popping it in the oven?

Making a gameplay video

I've got to take some short sequences of gameplay off of the outputs of a gamecube, an old nintendo, and a SuperNES, and produce a CD with the video on it. Since all of the machines have RCA out, it seems pretty straight forward, right? What equipment will I need, and are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?

What's the benefit of Amazon Associates tiered compensation plan?

Amazon Associates: I've always been utterly confused with the tiered compensation system. Now that they've changed the rules again, what's the upshot? As far as I can tell, there's now no difference between classic and tiered, except that you get a bonus with the tiered plan if you sell more than 30 items through your website. Am I missing something?

ok, so I've had it up to here with nefarious spammers and other lowlifes spoofing my email addresses, causing my inbox to be filled with bounces and besmirching my and my company's good name. since we're all relatively smart and tech savvy, what exactly has to happen in order to get an authenticating email system to replace what's currently out there? is it an impossible dream?

Connect my PC and my stereo

I'm looking for a wireless network client device that will access my main PC and allow me to listen to my MP3 library through my stereo. Ideally, the music selection process would be on the client end, accessible with a remote control, viewable on a television screen.
