The McDonald's Counter Rush Job. Why?

Why is it that at McDonald's they rush you into ordering as soon as possible? Specifically, if I'm the only person in the store who hasn't ordered and I'm away from the counter deciding what to order, they'll shout at me say, "Can I help you sir?" This only happens at McDonald's.

The Lorum Ipsum of Images

I am looking for a sample gallery pack for use in testing uploading images in web applications. I would like to download a zip of copyright free images that meet a variety of qualifications, the prime one being that all of the pictures must not be offensive or weird to clients, in the same way that Lorum Ipsum text is used as a non nonsensical but useful placeholder for the layout of a web application.

Time Tracking and Estimation Software for Herding Cats

New Boss. I'm a programmer. The Boss doesn't like programmers, principally because of time related issues. So, I'm looking for project time software that will quantify the work done towards accomplishing goals in units of hours.

On the Mundane Aspects of Imprisonment

When one goes to jail for a long time, how are the mundane aspects of one's previous life handled? What happens to the pets? If there's a mortgage and no one to assume responsibilities, is the house sold for the prisoner? Who pays the cable bill? Do you have to pay to cut your cell phone plan short of the contractual ending date? Who returns the library books?

Canada's IT Market

What would be the best city for me to move to for a job as a Computer Programmer in Canada? The best city would be defined as potential for advancement and suitable for my skillset.

MLM Scam / Traditional Chinese Translation

Readers of traditional Chinese: Does this scan of an article imply that the company being discussed is a MLM scam? Does it adequately address the concerns outlined in these Malaysian posts?

Removal of Zonolite Insulation

I found a bag of Zonolite insulation in my garage attic today, and I remember that the one time I was in my house attic, the floorboards were covered with loose fill insulation. Has anyone had to deal with this before?

Recovering Deleted Hotmails

Hotmail... I need to recover some emails, specifically email header information, that was inadvertantly deleted more than one day ago (past the 'trash can' time limit). A list of what I've done so far is enclosed, so [MORE INSIDE]

Bringing a wiki to my workplace.

Any advice out there for introducing a wiki into a workplace? Currently, I've found these success stories and this article describes a similar situation. But there's an additional complication: I am a powerless drone. Any anecdotes from either side of the fence?

How many raptors of crude oil did I burn on my way to work?

This is a weird question that just popped in my head. Crude oil is usually made from the ancient biomass, which may include both plant and animal material. Let's say that in the crude oil that was used to create the gas for my car was made of all dinosaurs -- specifically, a mass grave of thousands of raptors. On my typical daily commute (30km, or 18.64 miles), how many raptors have I burnt? Let's use a conservative 20 miles per gallon, round up, and say I used a gallon of gasoline. I've done some preliminary analysis, so [More Inside]

Classic Video Games

Licensing of 'abandonware' or classic video games... has anyone heard of any company or individual that was able to rerelease an old video game? If so, what kind of agreements were made with the original company with regards to royalty payments and upfront fees?

What's the advantage of owning stock with voting rights?

What is the advantage of owning stock which has voting rights? These guys (the first 20 posts, specifically comment #17) imply that stock which has voting rights will trade at a premium. Furthermore, this Berkshire memo mentions that there will fluctuation and difference in supply and demand between two types of stock that have a constant valuation ratio despite having differing voting rights.

What is it about voting rights that would add or decrease value to a company's net worth? Most of the links I've checked seem to only confirm that yes, there is a difference.

House heating

A question about heating a household: Do you expend more energy maintaining a constant temperature in a house, or does it cost more letting the thermostat become lower and heating the house to a normal temperature when it is necessary?

I have a thermometer that adjusts the temperature up or down depending on the time of the day. When I'm at work and it is winter, I set the temperature lower then when I am at home. Have I wasted my money on this thermometer? When I let the temperature slide, the furnace could run for 15 minutes to 'catch up' for the heat lost throughout the day.
