You Were Killed by Fluffy Wumpkins
September 25, 2007 11:35 AM   Subscribe

My son is entering that awkward teen stage and wants to put aside childish things. To that end, he would like to change his rather "kiddish" gamertag to something more intimidating (and less likely to be berated by his older sibling). Obviously, he's not looking for something like "Fluffy Wumpkins." He asked me to help him with suggestions for cool, edgy, threatening names. So, Hive mind, any ideas? Bonus points if it sounds particularly impressive or humiliating to the enemy after, "you were killed by..."

I'm not sure this qualifies as a real answer, but I don't think anything could be more humiliating to a gamer than getting killed by Fluffy Wumpkins.

"An_STD"

Seriously. It's the best tag ever, especially if the game uses the system "You were killed by..."

A friend of mine used it on UT2004 years ago, and it was the funniest thing ever. Turn text-to-speech recognition on and it gets even better. (Whether it's intimidating or not, that's another question....)

What could be more humiliating than, "you were killed by Fluffy Wumpkins"?

Seriously, a less-obviously-evil name could demonstrate the kind of confidence ... not often found in young teens, I guess.

Your son will come to realise that having a cool, edgy or intimidating name will be no substitute for actual talent and ability.

He could have the most fearsome name known to man but, if he's crap, then people will laugh at how easily they beat him.

However, if he's good then the name won't matter.

Only younger teens & single sociopaths go with "threatening" names these days. He needs to think up something funny & ironic, and look down on all the people who don't get it and mock him for not having evildestroyerdoommasterhunterkiller as his handle.

Some of the best gamers I know have ridiculous names (all the better to humiliate you, my dear...), but if he's tied to the idea try a name generator like http://www.drigon.com/~ta/gamer.htm where he can click through a bunch of them pretty quickly. After seeing a long list, he may realize that a name, by itself, isn't that intimidating.

Here's a list of famous assassins.

Who's his favorite badass? Twist that name around so that, say, Vic Mackey becomes Vic Smacky (okay, that's pretty weak, but you get the drift). And remember, any taken tag can be claimed by adding a jr. to the end of it.

*logs on to Xbox Live to change tag to Vic Smacky, jr.*

A friend of mine was called "A Pointed Stick." Thus, "You were killed by a Pointed Stick." Not terribly badass, but quite amusing.

Does he watch any anime or anything? I'm a woman, so my gamertags usually aren't along the lines of "NinjaKilla6000" or anything, but I usually use names of anime characters I like -- that was it's different, it's "exotic", but it's something I actually like.

Up until about 2 weeks ago, my son's gamertag was 'a damsel so lovely' (I forget exactly how it was spelled). Yeah, he lost a bet. With me. But he says it was the best tag he ever had, and oh so humiliating to the people he whomped up on. He stealthily played a few games online with his bff and got a huge kick out of the nightly phone calls from the friend, who would exclaim things to the effect of "DUDE you have to play with this chick, she will totally kick your ass!!!"

"You have been sniped by a damsel so lovely".

Now it's something only slightly less goofy. He's 17 and scoffs at all the Xx DaRkAsSaSiN xX and AnnihilatorMAXimus and HALOGOD69 type names. You have to be able to live up to the name you pick, or you will be tormented for it forever and ever until the end of time. Or until you pick another tag.

His nickname is ridiculously silly. But no one ever thinks to mock him for it when they're being headshot.

If he's set on something cool and dangerous, think in terms of predator animals. There's something about the idea of hunting for victims, or the lone-wolf-independent-survivor quality of predators that seem to appeal to gamers.

Randomness is good. For someone to think being good in video games makes them a big tough man and need to have a big tough name to pretend to be good at the game is weak.

For the same reason, if I'm in a game with some little asshole who has to call me a faggot I just talk, in detail, about how much I enjoy faggotry and want to make gay love to him. (Not gay in real life, but it's hilarious.)

I use this same account name for games - came about because I at first I just put "Tim" when I started playing Half Life / TFC / CS online and eventually found myself in a server with 2 other "Tims" and we all started changing our names to rag on each other.

Reconsider the cutesie names. I know that in my WoW guild we had quite a number of people who enjoyed PvPing with embarrassing cute names. Your allies will respect your humor if you're a committed gamer and your enemies will be ever more frustrated by their downfall at your hands. If they want to tease the name, just make sure the youngin' is adept at gamer trash talk.

Just don't use "cowbellemoo." I have a reputation to maintain...

Ooh, and here's a tip on how to train yourself to beat anyone in a FPS:

Older FPS games used to have a speed slider that would control the movement and aiming speed for the characters. Training against competent bots at high speeds will be frustrating, but eventually aiming and avoidance will improve. Once you get back to a game with normal speed, you're instantly better. One friend (who was being an ass) was pwnt by another friend using this method.
