Audio problems with mac os x

How do I get Imbedded Flash audio/video to work again on my computer running mac os x (10.4.7)?
Recently I have been unable to play videos on Youtube and google video as well as imbedded audio such as that in xxlmag.com's audio section (I tried with both firefox and safari). Youtube videos will just display "loading" and then never load. In addition, videos in quicktime will play but without sound, although if I play them in VLC they work. All other audio such as itunes still works. I tried reinstalling flash player and quicktime but the problem won't go away. What can I do to fix this?

(Worked for me on a non-Intel Mac, by the way.)
