Video game trivia questions, anyone?
April 18, 2006 12:44 PM   Subscribe

I'm trying to put together a list of good video game trivia questions.

Difficulty: Along the lines of "Japan's version of Super Mario Brothers 2 made its U.S. appearance in what video game?" Answer: Super Mario All Stars (The Lost Levels).

Preferably focused around more well-known games. Questions video game nerd friends of mine would know or have to pause to think about. Any good ones come to mind?

Best answer: It would be handy to know whether the questions will be posed with or without a chance to research (i.e. use google). Assuming from the example that you're focusing on American console gaming of the mid-90's, here's a couple.

What special processing power did Sega claim its Genesis console had?

In what title did Mario wield a firearm?

Which character from another video game made a cameo in Clay Fighter 63 1/3?

What was the code to activate blood in the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat?

Be sure to have all the answers be very cut and dried, nothing like "What was the first platforming game created?" where the answer is even vaguely debatable, because video-game enthusiasts will argue about it.
posted by Durhey at 1:06 PM on April 18, 2006

Limited to any particular platform? Genre? Era?

Good ones would perhaps revolve around the end-sequence of popular games - for example, in what game outro did the screen fill with static, and after a few moments shrink down to a bright dot at the centre of the screen? (Xenon 2: Megablast; make it easier by asking who wrote the music for it - Bomb the Bass)

Other stuff you could use - things like the company that produced classics such as Lode Runner (Broderbund), the film that Star Raiders 2 was originally developed to tie in with (The Last Starfighter), what was the origin of Team 17 - the brains behind classics such as Worms, Project X, etc. (they were a Public Domain software distributor called 17-bit software), in what classic Amiga game by Acid Software could you race using Cows, Caravans and biplanes, amongst other odd vehicles (Skidmarks).

You could make this as hard or easy as you like - but only you will know what your friends will be able to manage, and what is totally impossible for them to answer. Your best resource is your own experience with computer games, to be quite fair. We could sit here and suggest daft things like the number of points for a gold brick in the original Arkanoid, or how many different "worlds" there are in Titan Attacks... but nobody but the suggester would be any the wiser!

Not sure if this helps at all... :-)
