MeFites, A long time ago I was playing trivia in a bar and in between rounds one night this dark, almost minimalist country song played. I'm reasonably sure it was a Patsy Cline song. It was in a minor key with a theramin or possibly backup singers (or both!?) providing eerie accompaniment to a very catchy tune. I'd heard it before so I assume it's well known, but it's not on her greatest hits. Any ideas what the title might be?
Looking for an online resource which will make me into an instant Archivist/Librarian... Ha ha... not really but close. I am setting up an online archive of old records, photos, and other documents. I would like to do this right so that the average Joe can use it but also so that librarians and archivists won't look down their noses at me. Are there any sites out there which have basic information on this sort of thing? [more inside]
My favorite book is James A. Michener's The Source. What else might I like? I detest romance and I don't like "spy" novels. I don't like Ken Follet. I did like The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Googling and checking Amazon for Historical Fiction didn't yield anything interesting. Help me out here, guys, I trust your judgement.

Bunch of symptoms, maybe hypothyroid, what do I do next? For the past several years, I’ve had a bunch of nagging symptoms that together have been very frustrating, and at times debilitating. The onset of the symptoms was about 7 years ago. My GP initially thought hypothyroidism, but the tests came back normal. As the years have gone on, the symptoms have waxed and waned but never gone away, and I keep getting retested for hypothyroidism at my doctors suggestion, but the tests always come back normal. After looking at the actual values from the lab, and a bit of research, I’m wondering if it isn’t in fact hypothyroidism, and what to do next. [more inside]

How can I house break a 6-year-old rescued scent hound when I live in a condo with shared corridors and an elevator? After searching many rescue listings, I have found a cute dog that seems to be a good fit for me according to the adoption counselors. I plan to meet the dog this weekend and take her home early next week if all works as planned. The rescue agency told me that she doesn't like pooping on leash, but will urinate on leash. They think she'll be OK with the shared corridors and elevator. I'm mainly worried that she will make a mess in these common areas as I don't want to upset my neighbors. I have a Mac desktop with OS X 10.6.8 and use Firefox. When I try to download something like CCleaner or updated version of Adobe Flash, I'm unable to do so. I wait, and nothing happens. I'm computer dumb, so be gentle. Have I got my settings screwed up, or am I not doing something I should? This has happened a bunch of times when I try to download other stuff. I hate being ignorant. Many thanks if you can help.

Released only on the web, it's similar in tone to the Everything is a Remix series; dry delivery, well researched, touches on remix culture. Recently I obtained (for work-related use) an older arc lamp power supply. It's a Zeiss unit brand-wise but was manufactured by Ludl Electronic Products (LEP) on Zeiss' behalf. It may well turn out that this particular supply isn't suited to our needs (based on the lamp we want to use it with), but I would still like to find some way to determine the pinout of the output connector. Unfortunately, I've had a heck of a time finding ANY schematics for 75 W DC xenon short arc lamp power supplies, and despite my EE degree, I remain baffled following *mumble* weeks worth of ohming-out and circuit-tracing. And at this point I've been staring at the darned thing so long that it's become hard to tell if I'm missing something really obvious or whether it's just futile to expect to be able to determine what pin serves what purpose without a schematic. Long, convoluted explanation beyond the "more inside" button. [more inside]

Looking for experiences with SSRIs prescribed for occasional intense panic attacks and anxiety (some social anxiety too) WITHOUT any pre-existing depression, suicidal, or bipolar symptoms. Xanax hasn't worked well (lowers anxiety but seems to increase irritability). My friend has seen a therapist, who recommended this after several months of sessions, and is going to talk with a doctor about options. He's concerned with doctors' tendency to overprescribe SSRIs and monkeying around with something that's probably not intended for this.

With all the rain we have had lately, there are a lot of mushrooms growing in the woods. I was reading a book to my son (Face to face with Lions from National Geographic) and found a very interesting statement about male lions that our ousted from their Pride. I have the toggle itself, and I have acquired some spare leather-things, but I'm not sure of the best way to re-attach. I don't have a sewing machine, and I don't think I know anyone who does. I have discovered that a thing called 'Fabric glue' exists, but is it any better than superglue? Will superglue work on wool/leather? I could put a few hand-stitches, but the thickness of both bits of material make me think that I might not be able to do a very good job. [more inside]

My girlfriend's finishing grad school, and is beginning her job hunt. How can I best help her cope with the stress? She's smart, capable and graduating from a top 5 school, but she's generally negative and I think her fear of being unemployed is heightened by the fact that she had an unsuccessful job search at the end of her BSc, and by the pressure put on her by her family. In the text of my document (in Microsoft word for mac version 14.1.2) there are some bizarre horizontal lines just...sitting there between lines of text. You cannot get the cursor on them to delete them. I believe these lines are leftover old footnote separators from previous cutting and pasting from another version of word. But now, it looks like footnote separators are hanging around in the body of my text. How can I delete these lines? I tried the advice of the previous askme about getting rid of footnote separators, but it was an older version of microsoft word AND the advice pointed to was only designed to work for separaters actually in designated footnote areas. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the old separators refusing to exit the actual body of a text?

How to remove Lodgenet from a TV?I was just given a beautiful flat screen from a friend of mine that has connections with a local hotel that is updating all their older TV's. I hooked it up to all my devices and it doesn't work with many of them. It turns out it is a Lodgenet TV. I read somewhere that you have to remove the Lodgenet card as it is locked to a single channel. I have taken off the back of the TV but I have no idea what I am looking for. Does anyone know how to return the TV to its original state as the only way I can get anything to work is it to run through an old VCR instead of through the proper cables. (the three: yellow, red, and white). It's a 2004 Toshiba if that helps, and I don't have a remote for it.

mp3 is deemed by some audiophiles to be a poorer quality format than something like PCM WAV. Yet mp3 files can easily be converted to WAV. So the data that apparently is missing from mp3 files (and ergo detracting from the overall audio quality) must be there somewhere in those files, just hidden or compressed? Is that correct?? What exactly does an mp3 file leave out when it compresses what, presumably, is the original PCM WAV file of a track?? And if using an A/D converter of some description you convert something from vinyl direct to mp3 you presumably could then convert that track to WAV - so where would all that additional data comprising the uncompressed WAV file (that may be ten times larger than the mp3) come from? I've absolutely no IT knowledge at all - so forgive me if these are embarrassingly dumb/elementary questions. I'm just intrigued.....

New college needs to schedule classes, including required courses and electives. Constraints include (a) requirements as to the total number of hours each class must meet per week, varying as to credit hours awarded (typically entailing 2-5 hours per week) -- but permitting flexibility in terms of number of sessions per week (1-5), what time of day they meet, and so forth; (b) scarce classroom space, of varied room capacity, for classes of varied expected sizes. Instructors not such a big constraint. Seeking advice to pass on about software that optimizes the use of space and maximizes the number of potential class offerings, or kinds of people with background that could be consulted. Is there an Android app that will automatically switch on mobile data when I can't access the internet through the wifi connection?
I'm looking for an Android wifi manager app for my HTC Sensation 4G with a specific feature. When my phone thinks it's connected to a wifi network, it automatically turns off mobile data, which makes sense, as long as it's actually connected. Unfortunately, sometime there's something wrong with the wifi connection or the connection is really crappy, and I can't actually access the internet through it. This means that unless I go turn off wifi, I can't access the internet at all. Is there an app that will automatically switch on mobile data when I can't access the internet through the wifi connection?

Mrs. COD and myself are headed to VA Beach this weekend, and my efforts to secure a nice hotel cheap via Hotwire / Priceline have not panned out. We are visiting with friends on Chick's beach, so staying somewhere around the Norfolk Airport keeps us within 15 minutes of their place, which is fine. Has anybody stayed at a Norfolk Airport hotel recently? The reviews on the travel sites are kind of scary, but I'm hoping it's just Internet trolling and it's not really that bad. Cheap is good - we just need a place to crash Saturday night. Any recommendations from recent personal experience?

I've worn fedoras all my life, and I've recently realized it makes me look a bit like Fedora Guy or a stereotype I want to avoid. I've been wearing this black straw fedora, and my dad recently gave me a more traditional Akubra (can't remember the exact model, but this might be close). I've also got a light straw hat and a 'wacky' one with cowboy skin (and a grey flatcap for winter). What should I wear when I plan on being outside for long periods of time? ahem... this is a little embarrassing. I am female in my late 20's and have been attracted to both men and women before, and have sort of had relationships/ people I dated. When friends talk about their, hmm, libido, I never really know what they are talking about, and the phrase "physical attraction" as opposed to emotional or pretty face has never made sense to me. Until the other day. This woman with whom I have been working on a project came to the last meeting in a tight-fitting shirt, which accentuates her very slim and nimble waist. And uh, hmm, let's just say, both physically and mentally, I reacted instinctively and unexpectedly. (good thing nobody noticed.) Hi, I just got into an online relationship with a friend whom I've known for three years. He left his previous (online and real life) relationship of three years because his girlfriend was blackmailing him and spilling his secrets to other people which made him lose friends. At some of the older buildings on my campus the men's room has a very strange design to the urinals. I'm trying to remember where I would have read this. I remember a discussion of the omnipotence/omniscience of a writer in relation to his story world and its characters -- I think the book must have been about writing fiction. There was a particular example having to do with Time, and how a writer who is interrupted by a knock at the door leaves his character, who was about to sit down (or set the table or something), mid-sentence and in a state of limbo. Come to think of it, maybe this was about philosophy or theology... I may have gotten some/all of the details wrong. Any of that sound familiar?

I've never felt like the type, but as I get older I've been wondering - should I be one of those people who gets up early every day and has a few hours to do things before work? Is it unquestionably going to improve my life much more than staying up until 2 AM every day would? I think the morning time would be spent either going to the gym, or lounging around with breakfast and coffee and internet. Curious about who has tried this and decided it was or wasn't worth it to rise early, especially if you didn't think of youself as a morning person.

I am flying into London Stansted later this week. I'll be meeting a friend who works in Central London, and then driving with them to South Yorkshire. We'd like to meet somewhere in far North London/Beds/Herts that is as least somewhat on the way from Stansted to the M1, probably somewhere off the M25, and ideally a relatively small, uncomplicated town (I haven't driven manual or on the left for a couple of years and this is going to be during rush hour!). It should also be easy to get to on the train from Kings Cross or Euston. I don't know the area, so I'm going by Google Maps at the moment. Our current plan is Potters Bar station. Any better ideas?
I need to furnish a house for myself, my wife and two small kids. We have zero furniture right now. We will only be in this house for a year until we eventually buy a house. Without knowing the space that we will eventually end up in, I am not sure if I should make big investments in couches, entertainment centers, etc. I need to do this as quickly as possible. Should I buy what I really want or should I just buy cheap stuff for now? Either way, what's the easiest way to do this without running around like a mad man? I am going to have to pull this off without any help. Should I just walk into Ikea with a shopping list? Can I have all of this stuff delivered? We are in Austin if it matters.

I'm currently performing a mock research comparative analysis for a class. I'm researching the financials of 'our' metrics versus our highest competitors. One of the questions I'm attempting to answer asks if the variances (or standard deviations) of 'our' profit margins are statistically similar to the variances in profit margins of our competitors over a five year period. I have 11 companies representing the profit margins of our competitors, and of course the reports on our profit margins for these five years. Now it's been a while since my last stats course... so I'm wondering, would I use an F or Levene's Test to answer this? Or am I completely off base... and should look to another form of analysis.

Unfortunately, I could not get a picture of the plant, and I have been looking at images of impatiens and other flowers all night with no luck. Green thumbs of AskMe, do you have any ideas?

NCAA football question: In college football, the offense will often get to the line of scrimmage, and then everyone will turn and look at the sidelines for the play. Why isn't this considered a false start? Are the players not considered "set" even though they're standing still at the line of scrimmage? It just always looks odd to me when I see the entire offense, including the linemen, suddenly turn to the coaches (or to the signs and placards) for instructions. Looks like a false start.

Okay, I've been living in NYC over ten years, but there's something about taxi cabs that still confuses me. I understand what the cab lights mean most of the time. But what about when both the number light and the off duty sign are on at the same time? [more inside]

Help me become ok with conflict. I avoid conflict. Not just overt, head-butting conflict, but also minor disagreements, disapproving looks, divergent preferences... all the way down to the friction generated by the give and take of an interesting conversation. Anything short of complete harmony, and I'm looking for a way out. Sometimes this means avoiding the person or situation. Sometimes this means just shutting up and smiling. Sometimes it means not developing an opinion of my own until I know what other people think first. My absolute fear of conflict is a drag. It makes me and my life pretty bland and I want to beat it. How do I find, collect, beg, borrow (but not steal) new books for a school library that is filled with 30 year old, out of date, books?
Boy brought home this ancient science book from the school library. I mean, so ancient that it was just flat out false. (It was about global warming, and had been written in the 80's and 90's. It was hopelessly out of date.) When I talked to the librarian about it, she said that they had almost no books newer than 10 years old, and that more than half the collection was over 25 years old. It is one of the oldest library collection in North Texas schools. [more inside]

This is a multi-part question: My wife and I are going on vacation in February. We want to go either to the Caribbean or to Europe but cannot decide (I know, I know...these two really have nothing in common). What are the pros and cons of these two destinations in February? The Caribbean: which island? We're not looking for a "spring break" kind of a feel or huge crowds. Which island(s) has the nicest beaches, some cultural activities and good restaurants? Europe: Paris or Italy? We know February isn't ideal, but is there anything we should know about these two that would exclude them from the short list?

Where in the Chicago area can I find a bottle of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne? I like the vintages from the 2000s; they run about $120-$150 a bottle. I tried Chicago Wine Co., but they only sell the older vintages from the 90s or earlier, which are at least double the price. Same with House of Glunz. Any high-end wine shops that might be a good bet? The choices are somewhat overwhelming. Thanks!
This weekend I'm setting up a website for an academic event. I'd like the homepage of the site to have large, clickable progress bars that display the number of posts for each of the subpages (News & Announcements, Blog, Events, etc.). As more posts are added to each of the subpages (posts would likely be sorted and displayed by category and tag), its respective progress bar takes up more screen real estate and the tally count listed on/near it increases. Basically, I want the homepage to look like a giant, dynamic bar chart. Is there a freeware (or cheap) template, widget or piece of code that allows me to do this? [more inside]

I'm already on the radio (public radio--and yes, I do sound like that)--now I'd like to get into doing some voiceover work. I live in a remote area, so getting an agent and going to auditions isn't likely to work for me. I'd just like to do some work on the side, and technologically I'm set up. So what I'm wondering is, has anyone used online marketplaces like voice123 or voices.com? Is one better/worse than the other?
