I'm trying to figure out if this has happened to anybody else.
Last night, in the dead of night, my boyfriend pulled me on top of him and started kissing me and started trying to take my pajama pants off, ostensibly in the hopes of getting laid. I was really tired, so I told him to lay off and let me go back to sleep. This morning I asked him about it and he has no memory of doing this. It's happened before- he'll wake me up in the middle of the night by kissing me, and in the morning denies it ever happened.
I actually think it's pretty cute and funny- and especially ironic, considering he is not the most affectionate guy.
What I'm wondering is, is this normal? Has it ever happened to anyone else? posted by elisabeth r at 3:23 PM PST - 34 comments

Help me find this old DOS computer game. The talk of SkiFree reminded me of a favorite DOS Civil War simulator that was called, get this, Civil War Simulator, CWS.exe. It was a turn-based game, with multiple armies (Jackson, McClellan, Grant, Lee, etc.) that started out in certain cities and the player (as either north or south) moved the troops around to various battles, which were won based on numbers of troops, supplies, skill, location, etc. You could split or fuse your armies to take on more opponent's armies or fight them better and more. After much soul searching, and a few goodquotes on the green, I have decided to start nurturing a small web 2.0 company serving a small niche on the longtail. I have serendipitously stumbled upon an idea that I can't stop thinking about, am confident about, and am truly passionate about!
I would like to think I am a saavy developer, marketer, and communicator. Unfortunately I am plain ole' dum when it comes to legal frameworks, financial structures, and graphic design.
I am in the middle of the ocean, and quality services here are prohibitively expensive. Where can I find a good onshore lawyer, accountant, insurer, and graphic designer to solve my Rubik's cube? Are there soup-to-nuts consultancies that incubate small software startups like this?
I need a wide array of advice and help concering: Advantages of onshore vs. offshore physical incorporation and data hosting, choosing a beneficial incorporation structure ( LLC, Partnership, etc. ), understanding my obligations and liabilities to subscribing customers, painless financial management, beautiful multiple-themed CSS templates for pre-existing XHTML pages, and stylish custom icon sets.
I have devoted a bit of capital to this and would like to wisely invest in cool people that will complement my inadequacies. Can anyone steer me towards any quality sites, services, or partners to clear these important functions off my entreprenurial plate?
In the spirit of Open-source, upon incorporation, I will issue an equity position in my company to the best lead. posted by jasondigitized at 4:08 PM PST - 4 comments

What classic motorbike should I buy? I want a street bike for occasional use that has some pedigree to it. I am looking for suggestions as to what are "classic" bikes - ones that have a solid history and will not be too hard to repair or find parts for. I want something ideally between 350cc and 550cc, but would consider up to a 750.
Possible examples would be Honda CB400, BMW R75, I dunno....anything before about 1990. Old is good, but the only caveat is that I do not want a loud bike, so a 4-stroke preferred.
The last time I rode it was the late 80's, and I had a '83 Yamaha Vision, which I always thought of as the poor man's beemer - it was liquid cooled and had shaft drive, which seemed pretty cool at the time.
(I am not interested in any low riders or racers, although I would not rule out an on/off-road.) posted by SNACKeR at 10:01 PM PST - 22 comments

My Old English sheepdog has developed a very bad habit of using his snout to pop open the lid of our trash can in the kitchen - and then helping himself to whatever's inside. I've tried scolding him, as have my sisters and my parents. All he does is give us that same goofy-looking, puzzled expression, and then fifteen minutes later he's at it again. He's very well-fed and has more than his fair share of daily dog treats. DoctorWhoFilter: in the UK we have a TV show called Doctor Who, in which this dude with a long scarf travels through time in what is essentially a small garden shed called a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space).
More extraordinary than it's time travelling ability though, the TARDIS is actually bigger on the inside - you walk into small garden shed to find huge room the size of a small television studio. Hence, in the UK when you, for example, get into a car that looks kinda small but is actually incredibly roomy inside, one might say, "bloody hell, it's like a TARDIS in here."

I have iTunes 5 installed on two machines, one at work, one at home, with my iPod set to sync automatically to the iTunes library on my home machine.
When using iTunes 4.x, I was able to attach my iPod to my work machine and then configure the iPod (in the iTunes preferences) to 'manually' update, rather than automatically, enabling me to play files directly off my iPod on my work machine. When I returned to my home machine, I would switch the home machine's iTunes/iPod settings back to 'update automatically', causing iTunes to update the files on the home machine with a new Last Played date and Play Count.
iTunes 5, however, seems to have a bug in this regard: it notes a random 10 or 15-song selection of tracks played via the work machine's iTunes 5, but that's all. A day's worth of listening to tracks isn't logged as played, messing up Smart Playlists that grab music I haven't heard in a while. 1) Is this unusual or universal 2) Any fixes? Here's the background. My girlfriend is from the republic of Ireland. I am antipodean. We both live in the United Kingdom. I am 33, partially sighted (although I lead a very main-stream life and have no disabled friends). I say the part about me being partially sighted because I believe it's a big part of what has made me ME and given me a slightly odd-shaped perspective compared to mainstream western society. My gf is 36. Our relationsip is about 18 months old and seems to suddenly be coming apart. Two main parts of this seem to be 1) the fact that she seems completely unable to discuss / articulate her feelings or accept any kind of responsibility for them and 2) she appears to be trying to drive my friends away. To the unsuspecting, this may seem like an obvious case of incompatibility. It is however similar to what hapened in my previous relationship of five years.

Many people, including myself, read personal observations and see references to current events in literature that do not reflect the authors thinking on a subject. An example is the Robert Frost poem Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening as being a reflection on suicide. Frost has denied that this was his reference. It would be great if you could recommend a specific place (Asheville is too far away for this weekend), or better yet, a specific hotel/B&B/inn. This has been working wonderfully until I switched my monitor configuration from both of my monitors side-to-side to the current configuration of having one monitor on top of the other. Now when I zoom in and move the mouse at all, the zoomed in rectangle jumps so that the bottom edge is stuck to the bottom edge of the bottom monitor. I can move left and right, but no longer up or down. Any ideas? [more inside] posted by sirion at 8:27 PM PST - 6 comments

How did Kubrick film the psychedelic 'stargate' sequence of "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Some of the movie's special effects are obviously crude CGI (like the cockpit displays during spacecraft rendezvous) but the ending seems far more sophisticated. Regular old animation? Looks too... digital. How should he best go about doing it, considering time and money?
1. Buying them an inexpensive PC w/ a video-out card and cables, and then mailing them data-DVD's. (Cons being setup cost)
2. Buying some software and exporting all of the video as DVD-quality discs which they can play in their standard DVD player. (Cons being time spent burning like 100 gigs of video, wear and tear of dvd burner, and dvd player potentially not reading discs)

They are perfect for my purposes, and I want to get some more. (I've tried other folding glasses and none were as good). We do not have any kids of our own, so this is all new to us. We are looking for some resources (primarily books, maybe some web sites) relevant to our situation that will provide information and support for helping us to set up proper rules, boundaries, etc. for the boys and some other resources that will help us to help the boys grieve the death of their mother. Banking question: I have a small business in the US, I live in the US, I'm a US citizen. A number of my clients are in Canada. Everytime they send me a check, my local bank has to take a flat $10 out of it - even if its in US funds. Most of these checks are less than $50, so that's a pretty big hit. Apparently this $10 fee is not just my bank, but from their processor. I know I could ask my clients to pay in paypal, but a lot of them aren't set up to do it that way, and I'm reluctant to make them change.
I emailed a canadian bank, thinking I'd just mail a deposit off once a month, and then every few months transfer funds, but I need to be there in person to set up the account. Do I just need to insist that clients use paypal? Are there other options I'm not thinking of? Any advice would be welcome. posted by korej at 10:24 AM PST - 14 comments

I have a Wireless Ethernet bridge which I have connected to a PC via an ethernet cross-over cable.
This is working fine in terms of allowing access to the wireless network I can browse the net from the PC etc. with no problem.
The problem comes when I try to ping this PC behind the wireless bridge from another PC.
My other PC's on the network simply refuse to see it - all PC's are connected to the same wireless network and have no problem seeing each other except the PC connected via the wireless ethernet bridge.
All PC's are in the same Windows XP workgroup and indeed in the workgroup the bridged PC can be seen in the network neighborhood by all the other PC's with no problems but cannot ping it or access it via TCP/IP etc.
All PC's are in the same subnet - mask is 255.255.255.0. All PC's are configured to have the default gateway of the Router - 192.168.0.1. All IP Addresses are static as well.
What am I doing wrong here or will the wireless bridge effectively hide the second PC from any other PC's on the network - clearly not an acceptable situation.
I'm 99% certain this is not a firewall issue either as the second PC can see other PC's on the network with ease.
I'm going slowly mad over this so any help gratefully received.

My eight year old son is behaving sexually at school and at camp. I feel that it's too early for the birds and bees talk. But he has been in trouble. [more inside] posted by anonymous at 9:11 AM PST - 37 comments
At Dallas-Fort Worth airport the other day, I saw dozens and dozens of Army soldiers. Presumably, they were about to ship over to Iraq (everyone was in desert gear, families were there, etc.). Were these soldiers traveling via commercial airliners? Aren't there military transport aircraft for that? posted by Chrysostom at 9:10 AM PST - 13 comments
BackpackFilter: I'm looking for a specific type of backpack. Small profile (shouldn't stick out more than about 6in, holds between 1000-1600 cubic in). Clean design (doesn't have a million straps and buckles hanging off). Doesn't look corporatey/consultantish. Rectangular is better than bulbous. How can I transfer files to/from a Motorola V3 Razr and a new Powerbook if the Bluetooth File Exchange seemingly can't do it? It recognizes the phone, but can't see the internal structure of the phone's storage system. Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools has no Mac version. I can sync contacts and calendars with iSync and via Bluetooth, but I have a friend who has the same phone, but the inverse problem: he can transfer files with Bluetooth, but can't get the phone to sync contacts and calendars. posted by Toolshed at 7:24 AM PST - 5 comments
I just moved and got a new phone number that I'd rather not change. Twice every night at 4am, the phone rings and there's a fax machine on the other end. The caller ID shows "Unknown name, Unknown number." Besides leaving the phone off the hook or hooking up a fax machine (that I don't have), what can I do to stop these calls? I spend a lot of time at the computer. Sometimes, I'd like to sit in a nice comfortable sofa, and still point and click. Does anyone know of a "portable screen" that shows exactly what's on the pc screen, but wireless? A bit like a tablet PC without the PC... posted by wibbler at 12:07 AM PST - 8 comments
A while back I corrupted my MP3 collection, subtly at a really low level. I have a backup library, but it's old and contains lots of files I don't want in my main collection. Help. [more inside] posted by krisjohn at 12:02 AM PST - 7 comments
