I have been dreading asking this question because it’s so painful, but I feel like I really need to get this sorted out so I can move on with my life. So here it is: My husband and I haven’t had sex in over a year, probably inching closer to two years by now and I wonder if I’m just fooling myself/prolonging the inevitable in staying married to him. I want an International Prototype Metre bar. Actually, I'd settle for half-meter long bar (or maybe something scaled down to a manageable size?) with a Tresca cross-section, but I can't seem to find anything like this online. Any suggestions for where I could find something like this?

I had someone come out to clean my light-colored sofa, which gets pretty dirty because I have a dog. The guy used eco-friendly cleaning products and, $100 later, my sofa seems to me no cleaner than before he came. I'm wondering if this is because eco-friendly products just don't cut it and I need to go with the old-school, harsher chemicals, or whether my sofa is just too dirty to be cleaned. I'm thinking the former, but I'd hate to shell out another $100 bucks and still be left with a dirty sofa. I wonder if anyone has firsthand experience with this.
Help me keep the 10 month old safe in the tub with her big brother. I went to buy a bath ring and... apparently those are now verboten. So what do people do? [more inside]
My partner has a fondness for Captain Morgan Spiced Gold Rum. People sometimes just remember the brand name, not the type, and give him the dark rum as a present. As a result we have a stockpile of dark rum, which is a bit strongly flavoured for our taste. We drink it with Coke, but it's still molasses-y. What kind of mixed drink can you suggest to make the thick rum flavour less obvious? Cooking recipes which can use rum without tasting rummy also appreciated.
I recently went through some of my music from late 90s-early 00s, and a fair amount included j-pop and j-rock. I lost all the titles and artist names, so I resorted to using an app to identify some of the songs. However... the identifiers are all in Japanese, and I have no idea. [more inside]
We brought this sweet boy home from the humane society today, yay! He is 7.5 years old and was surrendered when his previous owner passed away. The only problem is we're not really keen on keeping the name he came with (Midnight). Realizing that I could FINALLY be the one asking AskMe to name my cat, I'm turning to you for help. What is a playdate, anyway? Is it a social occasion where parents hang out together while their kids play together in close proximity? And how did this pattern emerge? do people in other countries do this or is it mainly an American thing? [more inside]
I will be going to a convention in about a month and a half. Last year (at the same convention) I had trouble getting my hands on a map and figured it would be handy to have all the information on my phone which I'll be having with me anyway. I need help figuring out if I can do this. [more inside]

I'd like to start biking to my yoga studio. I need to bring my own mat. Talk to me about what works. Difficulty: trail-a-bike hitch precludes a cargo rack. Is there another way to carry it on my bike? I'm also open to mat bags that play nicely with riding a bike. [more inside]
I'm thinking that, for my next bike, I'd like to buy a frameset and have it built up. I've never done this before. What should I know? [more inside]
Hello culinary gardeners, I went hogwild with scented geraniums this spring, because I've been fascinated with them for some time. They did great in pots on my porch, but fall is breathing down my neck and I'd like to harvest some leaves if I can, and also overwinter them if possible (I'm in zone 8b, lowest temp is 20F). Questions: how far back can I cut them? Do you have any recipes/uses that you've actually tried them in? [more inside]
I'm looking for a children's book I read in the mid-90s about a young girl who falls through a lake into another place. Sound familiar to anyone? I've got a few more details to share. [more inside]
A question from my father I've been unable to answer: "YEARS ago, I recall watching what I believe was Jim Henson's first performance on the Ed Sullivan (TV) show. It was a tell (on stilts) black monster against a black background, dancing and dodging about in time with Halloween-style (monster) music. This was a LARGE monster, waaaay bigger than Cookie Monster, and was definitely not a hand puppet. It was a guy on stilts, covered with this monster outfit (I think), and it was a good act!!! ---Does ANYone remember this? I cannot find it on YouTube or Google......"
I'm really into this bike. I'm looking for a bike that works for touring and also for cyclocross. I understand the geometry isn't ideal for cyclocross racing per se, but I feel like this sort of geo is the best middle ground I've seen. My issue is I'm not super into supporting Specialized. I don't like some of their business decisions and I'm more into supporting smaller, American made companies. So, any recommendations?
I'm curious to hear how everyone organizes their Facebook friends lists, and how they figure out which posts/content to disclose to which parties. How do you use your lists? What is your system? [more inside]
How can I address the sexism in my parents' estate planning endeavors without seeming like I'm a money-hungry vulture? My parents were born in the 40s and recently they have been working to set up a revocable trust. They have two children, me and my sister. My sister is unmarried and I have two preschool/elementary-aged daughters myself. [more inside]
In Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day how was Ralph Denham’s first name likely to be pronounced? Like Ralph (Rayf) Fiennes or Ralph (Ralf) Wiggum? I don’t know if this would have been important – or obvious? – to early 20thC readers, but feels like an interesting social signifier.

They threw two gallons of saved up, putrid urine on the front of my house, getting half a gallon on my roof and some under the eaves. Police were called. I cleaned the best I could. The smell was nightmarish. This was in the spring. We are now into the fall and the smell returns when it rains. I've had three sinus infections since this happened, after not having a sinus infection for years. Could this be related? Is old urine soaked into my roof dangerous to my health?
I'm looking for music to fit into my "Big Happy" playlist. It's kind of a specific sound, at least it is to me... I like really big, synth-y, pop music that has big bursts of noise. Some examples that work for me... [more inside]
I just had a job interview for a job I really want that went really well. So well that I forgot to mention something kind of important: I started a part-time retail job between applying and hearing back about the interview (it was almost a month and I've been unemployed since May, so needed something to pay the bills) that I'd have to give notice at, but I'd hopefully be able to get shifts covered. I haven't had any direct e-mail contact with the person who interviewed me, only with the administrative assistant. They would want me to start ASAP. I'll probably be going in for a second interview sometime next week. How and when do I mention this? More important, how and when do I mention this in a way that isn't going to ruin my chances of getting this job?

I'm working at PAX Prime all weekend (a big gaming convention) and I severely blistered the bottoms of my big toes while dancing at an after-party tonight. I still need to work 8-hour shifts tomorrow and Monday on my feet the entire time! What can I do tonight and in the morning to result in the least pain possible? I have Nike Free sneakers that I'll likely be wearing the next two days. Thanks!
How can I get better at organizing my ideas in writing? I want to be able to write essays, long-form blog posts, articles, etc. I want to be able to use in-depth writing as a tool to accomplish things, instead of just enduring it when it comes up. I'm interested in resources (classes? books?), techniques, and advice. [more inside]
My kids rewatched A New Hope this week, and I ended up lost on Wookieepedia trying to find a broadly-definitive (by fans, not so much Lucas) take on droids like C3PO and R2D2. I understand slavery of sentients was eventually outlawed by the New Republic, but are droids emancipated? Can a droid be a Jedi (I saw the Skippy story)? Are droids AI or something else? How is Jar Jar Binks considered fully sentient in law, but not R2D2? Can a droid be murdered? What about copying a droid - is that like cloning a sentient being? Droids 101, please

I want queen cotton sheets with fun patterns to go under my boring grownup comforter. White or pale backgrounds, small repetitive prints. Where can I find them? I've been able to find isolated instances, but I want options! I currently have animal options in mind (e.g little elephants, whales, owls), or perhaps nice multi-color stripes. I might sacrifice my favorite niece or nephew for amazing octopuses or seahorses. Not kidding, I really am jealous of the babies and their magic crib sheets. Some examples of what I've already found are after the cut. [more inside]
I'm on a mission to find out what song this is. Heard on the HBO series Tell Me You Love Me at the very end of Season 1, Episode 8. Shazaam didn't recognized and I asked a gentleman at Hyped2Death.com and he didn't know. Also tried to decipher the lyrics, some are garbled. Singer is British I think? Thanks! [more inside]
What's it called when someone accuses someone of pointing out an injustice as perpetrating that injustice by describing it? Is there a name for this rhetorical device? An example would be in Jon Stewart's recent segment about Ferguson where a news anchor was quoted as saying "You know who talks about race?! RACISTS." [more inside]

I know Jensen and Emerson make them but is there a quality brand that still makes home stereos with a (or optimally dual, but I know that's not probable) cassette deck and CD-playing capabilities? I want an actual home stereo and not a boombox. I don't really care if it can read burned cds or anything else that one would consider fancy in the 90's. Just a stereo that plays cds and tapes that isn't guaranteed to malfunction in a year or two. Is there maybe a store I can order from that has a stock of dusty, unpurchased stereos from the '90s??
Some months back, I started taking lithium. When I went on it, my doctor warned me that I would have to stop taking ibuprofen and switch to tylenol instead when in need of a pain killer. Fine, I thought. Unfortunately, the switch has not been ideal for me. [more inside]
After four years of working for film festivals in various cities, and another few years living and working at a private school, I've come back to New York City to get my Master's while living at la maison famille. But nearly everything I own other than my clothes and my laptop is in boxes, either in my family's house or in storage. Some of those boxes haven't been opened since 2004. What I have now is a three part challenge, and if you can help with any part I'd be grateful. [more inside]
Help me talk to my five year old child about death age appropriately. We've talked about Fred Rogers. We've talked his feelings. We've talked about what he knows about it. He's concerned because his great-aunt died about a month ago, and now he wants to make sure we'll always be there. The problem is, in very short time his grandfather, my dad, won't. [more inside]

I got one of these for my birthday: KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment and would like to actually use it. This is on it's way: Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones: 90 Recipes for Making Your Own Ice Cream and Frozen Treats from Bi-Rite Creamery But I would like to make something in it this weekend, so hit me with your favorite ice-cream recipe. Obviously, needs to work in the above.
For the past couple of months, I have been angry (or at least irritable) almost all the time. Though I know many factors can cause this, I am fairly certain that my own anger is linked to trauma / PTSD. I have had plenty of bloodwork done and thoroughly discussed my meds (lithium, Zoloft, clonazepam, trazodone) with my doctor and pharmacist, so those factors can be ruled out. I am seeking your help for ways to lessen the anger or get breaks from it. [more inside]
Mac OS 10.9.4. Prior to upgrading, there was an option in the Activity Monitor where I could set the dock icon to show a color-coded pie chart, indicating how much system memory was in use. Now, it's gone, and I would like to get it back - or something similar, if available. [more inside]

I'm looking for good examples of bipartisan politicians. Particularly, individuals (or a pair of leaders) known for consistently and effectively reaching across party lines throughout their career. Can be global, not just US, but they need to be well known to a global audience. (No cynical jokes please. Unless they're good, of course...)
I'm separated and my wife has the house and has to pay all expenses on the house including loan payments. I went through getting the loan adjusted once, which helped for a while, but now she's behind again. She isn't doing anything herself and hasn't asked for help, but my kids live there too, when they are not with me, But I'm having trouble getting motivated to help out this time. So I'm looking for someone who can deal with the banks to get a refinance. [more inside]
I am browsing cases in Canada, and noticed several cited "Unreported" cases. The "Unreported" have a year, last name and the general offense. No results when I try to search for them on canlii.org. How do you shop for cheap 2.5 SATA SSD hard drives? I have had them fail suddenly and catastrophically within months. Right now you can get cheap (< $75) 120gb drives branded Sandisk, Kingston, and Mushkin. Is there any difference in terms of failure rates? Is there a particular controller to watch out for? Any other tips?
We're looking for a color scanner with minimal extras -- we just want something that will allow us to scan documents and produce a PDF. We do not want a printer (as those often won't allow scanning if the ink runs out), we do not need wireless functionality, we're not going to use it for photos, and we prefer actual buttons to touch screens. Ideally, we'd like both a feeder and a flatbed option, but that's not required. [more inside]

Here's a run-down of just a few of the publishing platforms I've heard of recently. Some of them are blog-like and others are book-like. Some are for technical writing and others are more general. Most cheap non-rechargeable AA Batteries (typically from China) go flat very quickly. About 15 years ago, typical batteries seemed to last about 4 times longer (my subjective opinion). I want long lasting batteries, what is a good type, what should I look for, what terminology "alkaline?". Thank you.
I am saving to go to Europe to do a masters degree. I am interested in International Relations, International Law, Human Rights, and European Affairs (history and institutions of the EU, European Law). I'm Australian but I also have UK dual nationality. I am starting to investigate programmes but am finding it hard to narrow down the options and find the best one for me. Flestrin minimus, a US citizen by birth and also a British citizen by descent by way of being the legitimate son of a British father, is planning to travel to London to visit family and study. He has a valid US pasport and has applied for a British passport, BUT said British passport has not yet arrived (it turns out that allowing 40% longer than the 10 week estimate was not enough extra padding). A dear friend (female, early 30s) is at the end of her battle with cancer. Our circle of close friends is spread out all over the country. We've been sending gifts, visiting, pooling money together for cleaning and dog walking, etc for a year. I'm employed now but have been job-searching for a few months. I've finally found a company that I'd like to work for. The disappointing part is, the final offer they've made is for a lower salary than I'd wanted; after crunching the numbers, I would be earning the same as what I earn at my current job, with no title change. Is it a good idea to move to a new employer for equivalent pay, if the only discernable difference between the two is that the new job seems more interesting? [more inside]

However, I was speaking to my father (who's overseas, I'm house sitting) and he'd prefer I do it today as car batteries shouldn't be left in an uncharged state as doing so does damage. Is this true? She said it works quite well for a large majority of her patients, but not everyone. Has anyone here been prescribed Topamax specifically for this reason? If so, how well did it work and would you recommend it?

I am looking for recommendations for simple software to assist our managers with doing their employee performance evaluations efficiently and timely. Our small company has about 20 employees, and we have previously used paper evaluations but would like to move toward software for this. I am a man. I had an emotional affair with a friend - let’s call him James - whom I was very much in (unrequited) love with, and recently decided to "break up”. The long story is here. Then I decided to start dating and recently met this person, let’s call him Fred, whom I like very much. The problem is that I am absolutely not over James, and we’ve even managed to re-establish contact, still very guarded at this point, although we have not yet met. So I find myself in a quandary and wondering whether it’s fair to start something with Fred when my heart is really with James. I mean, I like Fred very much and could ever grow to love him. But I fear I may be just using them as a convenient toy while waiting for a James moment that will never come. And Fred is a nice enough person that I don’t want to play with him. But then, I also need company and intimacy and I like having him around and he seems to feel the same about me, and is prepared to wait for as long as it takes for me to be truly over James. I got a new job (cool!) but have to turn in my MacBook Air from old job (oh well). Since I also used as my primary laptop for personal stuff, like banking and Facebook, it also has a ton of personal data on it. (I plan to buy my own laptop for next job. And no, I did not look at naughty stuff on it -- I do have a tablet.) The company wants the programs already installed left on the computer, which is reasonable -- so leave Photoshop and Word installed -- but I want to clear off any personal data. Is there a good way to scrub an Apple computer while leaving programs behind? Right now you could go to Twitter on my browser and log into my personal account without a problem. (I realize I can just Clear History on browsers, but also looking for deeper scrub, such as WiFi passwords and stuff on keychains).
I was doing some reading about plutonium and realized that I have a desire to own a thing that's surprisingly heavy when picked up. Deceivingly so. Heavy enough to make people exclaim at the weight of my small object. Bonus points if it's not (too) poisonous or (very) radioactive. I know Au and Pb are pretty heavy, but can I beat that? What's the very densest thing I can (legally) afford to acquire in sufficient volume to keep on my desk and fidget with?

I have a neighbor who is mentally ill and his condition is not improving. He leaves trash on our street and parks his car in front of my house with his trash inside. Any recommendations for online courses I can take; websites I can go to and books I can read.

We just adopted this 8 month old female Pekingese from a shelter in the midwest. We started out working through Buffy-verse names, and got excited about Fred, which we long-formed first to Winifred, then decided that sounded like a middle name and tried to think of a very generic first name, like Lady. We ended up with Lady Winifred and we call her Fred, but the grandparents object, and we're open to choosing something different, since we chose it before meeting her. [more inside]
As an incentive to get out the door and on the way to school, I'm trying to put together some fun audiobooks or podcasts that my 8 year old daughter would enjoy listening to as we drive together. I've spent time perusing audiobook and podcast options, but I'm not having a lot of luck (and the audiobooks can be kind of pricey). Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

So, I know that MeFi bikers are strong and fearless and use their gears and believe in bike commuting. But my particular commute is very long and not all that safe for biking, so instead I have used my beautiful Trek to ride to the train or bus park and ride. Which is fine, except that the longer ride, to the train, is killing me due to two monster hills. So, I'm really getting interested in an electric bike, and I am thinking specifically about this one or this one. Can the hive mind opine on what it is like to own an electric bike and whether I am making good choices? I'm actually OK with spending a few thousand because it is still cost effective. Other pertinent info is that I am a petite woman and my commute to the train is often going to be wet/dark.

I want to buy four or five interesting posters to fill up my blank walls in my new place and make it feel like 'mine'. I'd prefer to pick them out in person, rather than buying online. I'm especially interested in 20th century art (particularly abstract or semi-abstract), nature or urban photography, vintage maps and prints, and almost anything art deco or art nouveau. I'm also open to serendipitous discoveries that don't fit any of the above. Is there a place in New York that stocks a wide breadth of such things? [more inside]

For various reason I use several cloud storage services - dropbox, drive, copy, box, etc etc. All are great, all offer sync'ing of my PC (Windows 7) files and directories. I (like many people), sync different folders to different cloud services. BUT, I really don't need them ALL to happen INSTANTLY or SIMULTANEOUSLY. I fear that my PC is grinding to a halt because of these sync'ing services all scanning for file changes at the same time. It can't be good for performance. So ... is there a way to schedule each cloud service to run only at certain times? Or maybe to have one of them always running and others to pop in to have a quick look, and then disappear again for a couple of hours and not hog resources? Ideally I (we) want a "cloud service manager" that would allow users to control many different services and to allocate time slots, resources and priorities, etc.. Does such a thing exist? Thanks in advance.

I was talking with one of my friends and they brought up that they saw my wearing of miniskirts as inappropriate. I've never considered this, having considered my ability to dress how I want as a part of my liberation from conservative past and binary gendering of clothing. I wear mostly women's clothing simply because they feel comfortable and I have a phenomenal set of dance legs which I enjoy showing off in a myriad of fashions. Am I missing something? Thanks!
Several roommates and I moved out of an apartment in DC this summer that is owned by a large corporate company (coughAvalonBaycough). We’d been in the apartment for almost four years. Before we moved out, staff from the building signed off on paperwork stating that there was no visible damage. A month later we get an incredibly bogus set of damage charges from the building for nearly $1,000. We already got our security deposit back, but they’re threatening to send us to collections over these new charges. [more inside]

The nonprofit that I work with just moved into a new office. The walls between offices do a lousy job of blocking sound - I can hear conversations being held in the next room in a fairly normal tone of voice. Management understands this is a problem but every dollar spent on facilities is less money to care for clients. Need to know what to propose beyond the ubiquitous white noise machines. [more inside]

I lucked into a professional level potter's wheel for a great price this past weekend. While pottery is something I've been interested doing in my whole life, I've never actually used a wheel before. There are plenty of beginner classes and workshops around... but there are also a lot of videos on YouTube. Any reason I shouldn't have a go at it myself and put money towards tools/supplies/a kiln instead of spending it on a class? [more inside]
I recently figured out I'm lactose intolerant, and am still figuring out my lactose limits/sometimes forget I don't do well with cheese. Hence, I had two pieces of pizza with cheese yesterday and I've been having some exciting gastrointestinal distress for the past 24 hours. I've also been very tired, have some skin tenderness, and the muscles on the top of my thighs are achy like I stood a lot yesterday (but I did not). Can this be related to lactose intolerance? If the answer is yes, how long should I expect this to last?

I was really surprised by how much I liked the parts about Catholicism in the Mongoliad series. What other fiction is there involving the medieval Church's corruption, orders of knights (or monks or whatever) who are heretics or pagans who've drawn a thin veneer of Catholicism over themselves, gnosticism and mysticism, characters who may be god-touched, mad, or both and the people who have to keep them out of trouble? I have seen an ophthalmologist - the first time he opened up the duct with a tool (not fun) and gave me some eyedrops. At the follow-up visit he cleared me and said to massage the side of my nose in the shower to prevent recurrences. He also indicated my next step would be surgery, which I'd super duper love to avoid. [more inside]

I want boring music to listen to. Not even elevator music: hallway music. Dull, faceless corridor music. Cheesy, soothing, soft. Commercial music, the kind of music that men in the 1970s thought would induce people to feel groovy and buy stuff. The music that plays in Animal Crossing while you get your haircut. Ceefax music. Music you'd hear in an old Mad Men episode. Music that just sits there and doopey-doops while I concentrate and get important stuff done.

I would prefer not to go to the downtown jewelry district (again), but if someone can recommend a shop there with emerald and sapphire rings IN STOCK to TRY ON and not just loose gems or settings separately, I'm open to the idea. A few years ago, I came across the website of a German artist, female, who specialized in creating geometric artwork featuring very fine lines (think sweeping, 1pt lines). The only other things I remember are: 30ish in age, and had a non-standard German name, e.g. not something simple like "Anna Schmid". Anyone know her name and site?

Here are a few facts about this old SF story whose author I can no longer recall. 1. It was written by a giant of mid-century SF whose name I can no longer recall. Not Sheckley, not Asimov. I thought it might be Damon Knight, but I can't find it in his work. 2. It's a story about a man who travels to the future as part of a gigantic relief effort to assist future men who are burying themselves in the earth. [more inside]
My 9 year old loves Dragon City. I de-authorized the FB app to post on my behalf through Facebook settings, but it's still very easy to send invitations to all Facebook friends through the Dragon City app (which my son usually plays on my iPad). As far as I understand, there's no way to play Dragon City without linking it to a Facebook account. Is there anyway to turn off the ability to invite Facebook friends? [more inside]
I've hatched a half-hiking half-not trip - taking a train from New York all the way up to the beginning of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, and hiking the whole thing back down to New York City. I am trying to take courses at the local branch of a larger University in Ohio. The more rual branches have an open enrollment policy, however still request transcripts from previous schools attended. There was a very clustered situation, involving the retroactive removal of my financial aid package, at a previous school, too crazy to fix but it left me with a $15,000 bill that I am not realistically going to pay off making the minimum wage I happen to be earning, right now. I don't want to wait any longer to finish my degree, so remaining out of school until I come up with $15,000 is not a path I am pursuing. I would like to get advice from those out there with some knowledge, how can I gain admission to a university without this very expensive transcript?
My friend has asked me to help him identify a cartoon he remembers seeing sometime in the late 70s. According to him:It was about people who lived underground and they were trying to build up their civilization. It had a School House Rock feel to it. I think it had something to do with garbage/pollution. [more inside]
My parents, while still active (in their 50s), are getting older and some days I feel acutely aware that time is finite. How can I best spend time with my parents and show them that I care about them and that I am grateful for all they have done for me? This can include gifts they might appreciate, but I'm mostly asking about things I can do to maximize the quality of the time and the relationship I have with my parents. [more inside]

I just put some new ergonomic grips on my mountain bike, and they're slightly thicker rubber than the older ones. The tiny bit of extra circumference now obstructs the pull of my trigger shifter. When I try to go into a higher gear there's not enough clearance for the trigger to engage the ratchet in the shifter and move the dérailleur. I can force it if I squeeze hard enough and push the lever back out, and the bike shifts gears fine, so the issue is not cable tension. My question: Is there a way to adjust the trigger pull to be slightly further away from the handlebars? [more inside]

I'm looking for some sort of website that basically exists for other people to advertise their own websites. For free? If anyone's familiar with livejournal I know they would have had communities that specialize in things like that so that's pretty much what I'm looking for.

I have been told by other people who took the gre that the test prep class is necessary, and it is prohibitive even with the grants and payment plan they offer. I want to do my best, as I have a number of disabilities that make test taking very difficult.

The 33 1/3 series is a formidable list of little books about influential records, written by music writers, musicians, writers and fans. It seems to vary significantly in tone and in the writer's approach. For those of you who have read some of these books, which ones (or particular sections) stuck with you? Which didn't work so well? I would love to write one of these, and I'm trying to calibrate my angle as I hone my pitch.

In the spirit of being game, and because I like the idea of tablets but can't currently live with a tablet as my primary device, I'm considering a 2-in-1 device. Reviews are mixed. I can't tell if I should just get a normal laptop and wait a couple of generations for 2-in-1s to work some bugs out. Does anyone have experience/recommendations? [more inside]

I can understand that it would be an intolerable risk for soldiers and spies, but Foley was leaving an Internet café when he was abducted - not trying to live a hidden life.

My ex-husband hates me. I mean, REALLY hates me. I left him 4 years ago after years of emotional and verbal abuse, and he still has not once looked me in the eye or spoken directly to me since then. We have a 10-year-old daughter together and the divorce agreement says we should split her medical costs (doctor visits and prescription meds) 50/50. I emailed him to ask him to pay his share ($30) from a recent appointment and he emailed back saying that because he had taken her to get her hair cut, he should not have to pay. He then sent me pictures (!) of some over-the-counter cough drops he'd purchased for our daughter and demanded that I reimburse him for them, saying that if I refused I would "set a dangerous and vitriolic (sic) precedent in our relationship." What's the next step in creating this, if we're using Google DFP? It seems as though I need another piece of software to produce the code calls for DFP, but I'm not clear on how or what (while suspecting it's something simple I'm missing) that is. Talk slowly so I can absorb it all, thanks.

A friend of a friend bought an expensive condominium in Mid Manhattan. It appeared to me the floors are laminate; I have to return and look closer. Aside from the major cheapness factor, they are advertised as having wood floors. Is this a deception? How does she get clarification? Would her purchase documents have this detailed?
So, I didn't get the apartment I applied for in my last question. But . . . I'm moving into a surprisingly cheap three bedroom apartment in West Hollywood! I've lived east of Vermont pretty much from the start of my time in LA, and my early brief stint in West Hollywood was pretty miserable. I'm a little sad to leave Echo Park, but I want to get psyched about West Hollywood! [more inside]

My definition of decent = half kids go to college or something post-secondary, relatively safe (low risk of gang violence, I hope I'm not being presumptuous), stable (admin and teachers not always leaving every year). Non Magnet means no competition to get in, just living within a school district. My definition of urban means walkable and fairly dense, but not college towns.
Is there a video player that can either play a file's chapters in reverse order, or better yet, scan through a video to detect scenes (editors do this, right?), and then play them in reverse sequence?
I'm trying to compare the compounded losses due to inflation to non-compounded profits. E.g. if inflation makes me lose 3% of an investment each year, what % would I need to profit each year in order to exactly keep up? This is tricky because the profit is not compounded the way inflation is. I'm not looking for an answer to this specific question, but rather, looking for a tool or method to do this kind of math. At my company customers place orders online. Orders get selected for fraud screening and need to be worked in the most efficient way possible. Some orders take priority (customer pays for rush shipping and order needs to be screened today, so the warehouse can get it out the door). Currently orders are split into separate reports based on priority and workers are assigned to one report at a time. I want to combine them all into one report and assign all workers to that report. This one goes out to my fellow social media something somethings: Facebook Promoted Posts: When I choose the targeting, almost half of the brands/websites I want to choose aren't available. I start typing the name of the page, and it just never comes up as an option. Some of common names (Twice/www.liketwice.com) some have weirder names (The RealReal), but it's the same issue. Is there a way around this? A trick I don't know? Or is this just another way Facebook exists to make me tear my hair out?
If you're flying in to Reagan National Airport in DC with a baby and your own car seat, how do you get a cab to your hotel? Tell me about your food processor, especially if you use it to make peanut butter. Our food processor's bowl is cracked, and rather than replacing the bowl, we're thinking of upgrading. Consumer Reports recomments a Cuisinart ($180-$300) or Breville ($400), but the high end of that price range seems too steep for us, considering how much we use the thing. That said, we're willing to pay around $200 for a good machine. I'm interested in your recommendations. [more inside]

There's this science fiction story I can recall reading in at least one anthology, if not multiples. It is told from the perspective of a young mother who is going crazy dealing with her kid(s). I've been trying to find a replacement for East Village Radio, or some sort of equivalent. Soundcloud and Spotify don't cut it as it requires too much effort curating what I want to listen. Red Bull Music Academy is close, but is too festival/house without a lot of diversity. I'm following a few EVR shows that have migrated to other platforms (Chances with Wolves, Delancey Music Service), but ideally I'd like an app that just plays good music. Awhile back I listened to a left bank French music station that was alright, but I forgot the name and at the time it had a pretty mediocre flash player. This was a legit station however, with ads, I didn't mind it. Any suggestions would be great!

I am trying to remember the name of a book I read within the past few years about how multilevel marketing (MLM) doesn't work. I could be wrong, but I don't think the book was solely about MLM. The book talks about all the reasons that MLMs don't work, but the one distinguishing thing I remember from the book is: MLMers need to set up "events" at random-ass places, where they get people to sample the product and get them hooked into the scheme. There were *pictures* in the book of these places, and the author made points about there's never any description on the outside about what's happening inside. I remember that one particular MLM sold smoothies or juices or something along those lines, and some of the pictures showed how bizarre it looked to have small cups of juice sitting on a table for people to sample, and no one was in the room. It's a shot in the dark, I know.. but even if you can suggest books that talk about how MLMs don't work, that would be great. Thanks!

I have a very very niche job. I've been doing it for over ten years now and have made about $28,000 per year. Because of my experience, I was called in for a meet and greet. It was going to lead nowhere. So, I pretty much blew it off, and blew the next one off, and showed up to the third because it was on my way home. They hired me and gave me a job that pays about $786,000 per year. I was told that they had reservations about me and told me they were bothered by the fact that I wore "denim with unpatched holes" at the interview. I didn't even think I was being considered. This is very unreal. And now I will have a job that pays me more in my bimonthly check than my last year's entire gross. Looking for some book recommendations for someone who wants to move from 9-5 to self-employed in an artistic field (specifically writing, but the book needn't be so specific--just not about say, starting a manufacturing business). But only looking for PRACTICAL books. I keep picking up things that look practical that end up either being more "inspirational" or that are trying to cover too broad a base, from people who want to open a bake shop to people who want to do web comics. School is approaching and once again I have to find jeans to fit my son. He needs a 28x32. It is possible to find 28" waists at Old Navy and Target, but they are more often than not closer to 30 or 31 inches when you measure them. Where are the the denim trousers that are true to size and are very reasonably priced?
I rushed into a new job after a layoff a few weeks ago, and it's really not a good fit. The commute is too long (and I have no interest in moving here, because I love where I live and the job is in a really dismal part of the county), the work is too boring (it's IT work that's largely automated, and my "job" appears to be to watch things and make sure they don't go down) and it's starting to make me ill. I'm very close to a breakdown and I am not sure what to do to improve my quality of life. [more inside]

My workplace features some 60s/70s-ish looking sofas and chairs in a foyer, which is finally being updated. As a result, said furniture will soon be put out on the sidewalk, and I can claim it if I want to. I'm not a huge fan of the furniture per se, but am trying to figure out whether this stuff is cool retro crap that can be re-sold, or just crap. Pix here. [more inside]
I (24yo F) live independently here in DC and have a good life. I have a great full-time job that pays pretty well for someone my age, go to grad school part time, and have a happy social life. I have an excellent relationship with my parents, but I need to talk to them about how my special needs sibling (21yo M) affects my life in the present and the future. I get along very well with my parents, but I'm not sure how to broach this topic in a way that is productive and respectful. [more inside]

Hi, I go for periods and first went a few years ago. Sometimes I feel a real sense of camaraderie/connection and take away useful insights, at others I feel I am being a bit indoctrinated (a BIG no no for me) by a theory I have questions and concerns about. I'm an athiest and so the higher power talk can be awkward for me, but it's totally not my only issue. [more inside]

I missed a call for a potential job interview today, the call was left early in the afternoon and I didn't see it until early the early evening. Normally, I wouldn't be fretting over this, but in the voice mail the manager said she'd like to schedule an interview for Wed. afternoon and now it's Monday evening. Would I be safe with calling her back tomorrow morning and apologizing for missing the call, etc. or would it be best if I leave some sort of voicemail message tomorrow (I wouldn't know what to say though) AND still call back in the morning? Sorry, I feel embarrassed asking this, but I'm freaking out about missing an opportunity! In the future I will be much more attentive!

I just moved back to my hometown after being away for a couple decades. Are there any good alternative stylists around these days? All I've been able to find so far are trendy salons with stylists who don't really listen to me and leave me with soccer mom hair (which is great if that's what you like but it's not what I'm looking for.) Difficulty: neon hair with very difficult to work with texture and thickness combo. Thanks in advance!
Not happy with my hair lately. I'm having lots of breakage which turns to frizziness if it's not flat ironed. I am a low maintenance person but I like having long hair. It's just past my shoulders and is naturally dirty blonde and lately I have gotten some grey. It is mostly straight but has a slight wave. (Female, early 30s) [more inside]
I recently had two very close friends to stay for the weekend. My partner and I put a load of effort into tidying and cleaning the house, buying new towels for our guests, filling the cupboards and fridge with yummy (and expensive!) food, and my partner spent hours cooking. I had a nice, though tiring, weekend (with some awkwardness as we have all changed over the years since we were very, very close) but when the guests had left, my partner pointed out that neither of them had brought a gift (I would never expect something huge, but I don't think I ever don't take a bottle of wine/flowers/chocolates if I go to stay with someone..). We also realised that neither of them had offered to (or taken it upon themselves) to help with the washing up after any of the homemade meals we had - even breakfast! [more inside]
There's a pithy one-liner, almost a saying or slogan, about how it's easy to complain about or take something for granted when you don't need it, but it's super important when you do need it. I'm pretty sure that this one-liner originally applied to one specific thing (maybe the police, maybe a labour union, maybe socialized health care), but the sentiment could easily be generalized to a whole set of special purpose institutions. This whole goddamn saying is right on the tip of my tongue. Help me out?

I stay at the same large corporate hotel that is part of a large national chain every week. Every other week or so, I find hair(s) in my stack of clean towels (in different rooms, on different floors). These hairs do not match my hair length and color. Is it worth it to complain to housekeeping? I question if my complaint will make a difference since the hotel is so large. What is the best way to raise this so that my issue is heard and acted upon?

Us: old farmhouse, wood floors, golden retriever, crawling baby. There is dog hair everywhere and the baby gets into it and I feel like I'm going about this all wrong. What do you do with your floors, and pets? The floors aren't very fancy, if that helps. Not as bad as the last AskMe about wood floors, but no high polish and lots of cracks that could really be tighter. I'd just like to keep everything clean and tidy so that baby can roam and my feet are happy. I grew up with carpet so this is totally foreign.
We're having an Sunday afternoon (1-4pm) cheesecake reception for 2 dozen people, and also want to provide fruit, veggies, cheese, and crackers. How much non-cheesecake food should we provide for a group this size, if most of them are also eating cheesecake? What about beverages? [more inside]

But much of my friends/acquaintances are not really in a similar position, which makes me feel guilty/weird about sharing what's going on in my life. I feel apologetic about my so-called "success", which leads me to under-share about myself. Help? [more inside]

My housemates and I interviewed several people yesterday for a new roommate. We chose the person whose move-in schedule logistically worked best. However, we got along with all of the interviewees surprisingly well; each one stayed and chatted for at least an hour. I especially got along with two people, and I'd like to contact them again to see if they want to get together as friends, or - especially one of them - as a date. How inappropriate is this? Would you feel flattered or stalked if someone who didn't choose you as a roommate asked you out? [more inside]
I'm staying in a summer rental house right outside of Hyannis with my family for the next 2 weeks. I have access to the internet and lots of travel magazines on what to do while we're out here. But I was hoping for some specific suggestions on things to do specifically with a senior citizen who can't walk very well and a toddler. Also, a pregnant sister who tires quickly. Has anyone done activities out here with an older parent with mobility issues or a young one that worked out well? Also, I'd love to hear any suggestions for CrossFit in the area (for me). Thank you.
I'm a few months out from having my first kid. I'll be staying home to care for the child for at least the first year, and the thing that scares me the most is how many parents who did the same thing report feelings of isolation and loneliness. How can I minimize this in my life? [more inside]

YANML. What's next? Have I covered my bases? Do I need to lawyer up? The short version: My husband and I were walking our dogs. So in Chrome you can define short keywords to perform a search with the search engine of your choosing. If I type "am shoes" in the address field, it searches for shoes on amazon.com. As I transitioned from Opera which has no such restrictions, and having used these prefixes for a long time, I would like to keep using them. Anybody know how to circumvent these restrictions, or at least why they are in place?

This charming short film, maybe 15-20 minutes, is about a Mexican woman's morning routine of roasting her own coffee beans in frying pan, filtering coffee through a linen handkerchief, then washing the linen and hanging on clothesline to dry. I thought it was by Les Blank, but can find no listing for it. I also searched Werner Herzog, but couldn't find it. Film came out of the Bay Area food renaissance of the '70s, I believe. We heard it on Public Radio (not sure in which state) several years ago. Anybody know what this was?

The SurveyMonkey type polling websites and google docs allow me to collect ranked choices, but they don't help me match up the highest-ranked choice of all my respondents. Make sense? What is proper Craigslist etiquette as a seller in this situation? I listed a couple items. Someone replied. I arranged to meet them at 3:00 today. Then my co-worker said he might want them and he's the one coming over to be a manly presence while I sell this stuff, so I feel obligated to him. Then I got swamped with about twenty other e-mails wanting to set up times to look at the items, and one offering to buy one sight unseen. How to proceed?

I run a science support network with frequent visitors and high turnover. A current project has two devices incorporating Axis webcams on a dedicated subnet. The laptop (Windows 8) can see both the subnet and the host network, and machines on the host network can see the laptop. [more inside]

Seven years ago, I posted about a cat from my house's previous owners who'd been relentlessly stalking my house, eventually ripping through a screen to get in and shit all over the floors (and I'm quite allergic). Three years ago, I moved 35 miles away to my current house. Last week, she found me, and she's stalking my house 24/7. [more inside]
For multiple days I keep feeling like a cold drop of water has just dripped directly onto my leg, in the same spot each time. The first time, I was 100% sure that there was a leak in my ceiling. The next few times I still found myself looking up, somewhat confusedly. It has continued to happen multiple times a day. Is this just a quirky body thing, or a known symptom of something to take slightly seriously? [more inside]
I never lost a passport until 2 weeks ago. It was a 10 year passport and it still had 3 years left on it before it would've expired so those are a lot of years of memories I lost. Now I'm applying for a new one, but I've heard terrible stories about passports getting revoked for 10 years if they are lost more than once or something like that. What???? That would be terrible to be unable to travel for a whole decade. I'll be an old lady by then. Is this what happens if I lose my replacement passport too?

I am converting my home office into a nursery for impending child. It's not technically a bedroom as it has no windows and is about 10x12' (very high ceilings though). I've gotten a little nervous reading some home blogs where commenters freak out saying a kid will die in an airless room (these are mostly on converted closet arrangements, e.g. here). What should I worry about? How can I best prepare/alter this room? [more inside]
I love jargon, especially among sub-genres of things. This week a web developer friend uttered a sentence about frameworks and databases that made sense but sounded so ridiculous I had to stop and ask him to repeat it. I'd like to hear more of these. Please give me the most jargon-filled sentence that you might have uttered at work in the past few weeks and made complete sense to coworkers, but sounds utterly ridiculous to outsiders, and state what your occupation/context was for it.

My mother-in-law is a prolific knitter, and I'd like to get her to knit me a pullover for winter. Trouble is, most home-made knitwear tends towards the baggy, which looks ridiculous on me - I wear a European size slim fit small for most tops. Is there anywhere online I can search for knitting patterns that won't look like a tent one me?
My phone camera had a bad day and somehow saved 3 pictures I took as the same image. ie when I click on the 3 different files, it displays the same image. But the thumbnails show the correct image for each of the 3 files. Somehow the jpg files must have got the thumbnails and bigger images mixed up. I've tried different viewers (on my Window computer) and get the same results. I believe jpgs can store several image versions - Is there some technique or software that might let me see and extract all the images within the jgp file? (with the hope to rescue the biggest version of my intended picture for each file). Thanks

I would like to hear stories from people who have "come out" about their lived experience of mental illness. What is it like to simply say, offhand, "Oh, yeah, I had depression" in the same way one might say, "Oh, yeah, I'm queer" - and have that be relatively common knowledge about you, rather than a private matter to be shared only with your closest confidants? How did you make the decision to be open and honest about your experience, and what were the benefits/pitfalls of doing so? Did you worry about professional ramifications down the line? How did it affect your sense of self? Do you ever wish you could un-disclose and stop being the "token crazy person"? I am particularly interested in hearing from people who have "come out" about their experience in order to assist others - for example, using your lived experience in a professional context to work in mental health promotion or peer support work.
I have been with my girlfriend since 5 months ago. Since the beginning we became friends on facebook. I love and trust her and have not seen anything suspicious from her. The only thing that got me a little worried was that on two occasions she told me that she kind of still cared about her ex boyfriend who she broke up with two years ago. When she saw that I got offended she told me that I do not need to worry because the feeling she has for him, is like a mother-child feeling. [more inside]

I came home after work today and noticed that my mailbox is tilted. Then at around 6 PM, one of my neighbors came over and told me that she witnessed a car backing up and hit my mailbox and then drove off. She was able to write down the license plate number of the vehicle for me. I'm not sure on what to do now. It's an old mail box that I've own for about 10 years and I do not mind replacing it. So I don't know if I should just go buy a new mailbox and let this incidence go. I'm a bit bothered by the fact that the driver drove off and did not accept responsibility. How should I go about handling this situation? Thanks for the suggestion!
Story research filter: My imagination was sparked by a recent comment about how computer programming was considered a suitable career for women in the 1950s and 60s, akin to clerical work. Bonus points if you can help me name some companies in 1950s San Francisco that might have employed my character. [more inside]

I love Monument Valley, and would like to find more games like it. I'm seeking ones that are beautiful, minimalist, simple, atmospheric and tranquil -- the less time pressure and freneticism, the better. Puzzle-like aspects are great, arty/indie is great, good use of sound would be great. I'd especially love recommendations for games featuring female protagonists and ones rooted in a non-competitive worldview --- but those aspects aren't critical, just nice-to-have. Help me waste my time with beauty and joy :)
I'm trying to remember the name of a game for either the ZX81, the Commodore 16 or the Commodore 64. I suspect it was one of the former two. Gameplay involved a single screen, with several platforms and pipes connecting them. You played as a square or round character and had to move via the pipes and platforms. Various other characters were also moving around, which you had to avoid. All of these details are fuzzy. [more inside]
This is for an older friend. She remembers a movie made in the fifties that was about a couple of American housewives going to Italy. I've come to understand over the years that others actually think of a relationship as a safety net and source of comfort. I want to think of them that way too. How can I adjust my mentality? yesterday morning when my wife started her brand new audi Q5 2014, it started giving out a weird sound from the rear section, sth akin to horse hoof beating on the road. she got off the car twice to check what's going on and found nothing out of ordinary. after about 40 mins, she parked at her friend's place and then she started hearing the typical sound when the tire is leaking air. she then saw one of the front tires was going flat. the whole sequence of events was a bit traumatizing for her as she is a new driver with less than a year of experience driving any kind of car, and this is a brand new Q5 with only 90 miles on it. later on after auto shop fixed the tire, the weird sound disappeared. my questions: 1. were the two events (weird sound and flat tire) related? 2. what was that sound? is it some kind of warning system by audi? 3. why didn't the tire pressure monitoring system warn her? thanks,

What has your experience been with silk tops? Specifically in regards to Everlane and/or Equipment if you've purchased from there. What other tops/blouses can you recommend to keep warm and look presentable at work? [more inside]
I've never been very good at either math or at eyeballing things like weight or dimension, but was thinking recently about how to more or less accurately weigh things without using a scale. What good methods are out there to approximate other kinds of measurements? [more inside]
My boyfriend and I both hate making each other feel bad. Does this mean we can't talk about things that aren't going well? He in particular feels very hurt when I bring up things that are bothering me. [more inside]
A few weeks ago, my bike lock left me stranded after the stupid plastic key handle broke off, leaving the rest of the key trapped inside the lock (and leaving me trapped four miles from home, in the rain). Similarly, the weird plastic key handles add a lot of unnecessary heft to my keychain. Are there any decent bike locks that use "normal" keys? Bonus points if I can get multiple locks that use the same key.
After two hour-long telephone interviews with the hiring manager at a potential new employer, they said they want me to fly out to the west coast for a day-long interview, at their expense. However, because this would necessitate taking several days off work and the hassle of traveling cross-country, I'd like to get an idea of their salary range before accepting the offer to come interview. Is this appropriate? [more inside]
I have roughly 150ml of water, a little bit of sand, and three small rocks from a recent international trip. Crafty Mefites, do you have any suggestions for how to make this into something neat that I can hang on a wall? It doesn't matter to me if the rocks and sand stay in the same place. My first thought was something like an Ecosphere that I can fill myself but I'm not sure if that would work out long term.
I'm putting together an extended mix for some friends, focusing entirely on electronic music that's unusually well-suited for infants. Anyone have thoughts on appropriate tracks? [more inside]
I'm a lady in my mid-thirties starting to get 1-2 zits/month on my ladyparts. The are small, red and painful and eventually come to a head. The white sebum is spherical and hard, unlike any zits I've ever had before. NSFW, I assume. [more inside]
Mr. sixswitch and I both have a common experience of precocious kids: trying out words that we've learned from reading in conversation, with tragic results. I pronounced disheveled as dis-heveled (because obviously you could also be heveled), he said 'doicksiem' instead of 'deuxième', and so on right up til yesterday (chassiss for chassis). Is there a linguistics term or nickname for this type of thing? [more inside]
I work in a large, highly corporate sales company where they're hardcore on discipline, time management, organization. I work hard whilst at work and I am learning and growing, but I have such a hard time coming into work on time. We start 7:45 in the morning sharp--by this time we junior salespeople need to be at our account managers' desks, prepared for the day, read emails and self-organized. I. suck. at. this. My newish neighbors keep complaining about the level of noise coming from my apartment, but I'm not being loud. How do I handle this? Sensitive details in the explanation. [more inside]
I know I am depressed and need help. I don't know where to start though. Do I look for a therapist first? Do I make an appointment with my PCP first? Going to the doctor because "I feel sad all the time" seems so stupid. Should I start with a psychiatrist appointment?? [more inside]
I have two pairs of old glasses I really like, and want new lenses for them. Is there anywhere in Boston that will give me a good deal on them? Single vision, weak prescription, polycarbonate. I could probably be interested in adding the first AR option. Costco is not an option. Walmart is $79, but takes several weeks. Where is the best place to have my new prescription filled?
Partner and I are interested in painting each other's bodies as a prelude to Other Stuff. Getting non-crappy body paint has turned out to be a surprisingly hard thing, though. Everything we've ordered from Amazon has been really unsexily crappy, and often nasty-smelling. Does anyone have a specific recommendation? Should we just go to an art store and buy some acrylic, and then take a shower afterwards?
I've been with my boyfriend for a little over two years. We've had a good, happy, supportive, and very loving relationship with very few bumps in the road. He has a tendency to get irritated more easily than I, which usually diffuses rather quickly by him realizing he's overreacting. On occasion I've said to him "oh come on, its not that big of deal" when he is overreacting and it diffuses. So nothing outside of the norm. My temperament is on the extreme end of laid back, while his is closer to the high strung end. [more inside]
After years of chronic pelvic pain from fibroids, cysts and likely endometriosis, I've reached my breaking point. The UWMC clinics refuse to even consider surgery for any of the above and are prescribing Lupron as my next option (after 2 IUDs, Lunelle, Depo, and The Pill) for probable endometriosis. Help me find a Seattle OB/GYN who will do the surgery! [more inside]

Haven't had any luck in identifying this object found, at about 5m depth, just off Ammouso beach on Lefkada - some sort of pithos, or something left over from a war? Photos: 1, 2, 3. In a brief, snorkeled dive down, though it looks rather thin, the surface did seem to the touch to possibly be terracotta, and the four regularly placed, circular handles remind me of a pottery feature. Any ideas?

I haven't been able to sleep well for the past week; this is totally out of the blue, as I usually get around 7 hours of z's. I think it's due to stress. I'm averaging around 3 hours on a good night, which is taking its toll on my physical/emotional/cognitive health. I'm actually dreading getting into bed tonight, and would like some advice from MeFites who are struggling with/have overcome insomnia on how I can best rig my chances for possibly sleeping well. Imagine you have the choice of taking (1) a very lucrative but highly demanding and stressful job in your current city, and (2) a federal job that requires a move and that pays only 25% of the lucrative job. Job 1 comes with an initial 2-year contract. While there's a possibility of getting sacked after two years, I imagine they'd renew the contract for at least two years, and if I'm performing well, I could keep going after that. If I got sacked, I could probably find another similar but probably less lucrative job, but it would take time and be quite stressful. Federal job is presumably more stable. Which would you take? Possibly relevant details: early 40's, married, no kids (and no plans of having any), very substantial savings to date, home-owner (with mortgage), currently living in big city. Interested in hearing your life experiences vis-a-vis working life and retirement. Are there benefits to trying to maximize income early and getting out of the game, vs a more slow and steady approach that provides more security? I'm clueless about retirement and recognize that a financial planner could help, but for now I'm more interested in hearing other's experiences.
I have fallen hard for someone at work. My 18-year marriage has been good, but now that I'm in this place I'm in, I'm seeing things in a different light and I am beginning to question everything. If you've been through this kind of thing before, what has helped you work through it? [more inside]

Throwing away all the political and financial pressure that dilutes and warps science, if one wants to engage in scientific inquiry and be productive and contribute in some small way to humanity's scientific understanding of the cosmos, how does one go about things? How can I do this?
I haven't been feeling so confident lately. I know my SO could also be much happier if she felt a bit more confident. When we first met around 3 years ago, we were both extremely confident. I've been tasked with developing a set of standard IT Infrastructure Project Milestones and I'm kind of at a loss on coming up with a standard. Basically we have weekly status slides (PPTs) that we fill out for EVERY project that's in flight at our company. I'm the PM for Infrastructure. I was using something pretty generic like: 1. Project Kick-Off 2. Requirements Review/Sign Off 3. Design 4. Development or Set Up/Configuration 5. Test Unit & UAT (Regression & System If Applicable) 6. Deploy (Pilot * Deploy Where Applicable) 7. Warranty All you IT gurus out there (and PMs!) can you help me develop something better that can be used as a standard?
English is not my native language and I have a bit of an accent, but I have lived in an English-speaking environment for over 15 years and nobody in my life (work or friends) is ever unable to understand me when I speak. During her stay, this friend keeps making a big deal out of certain words that I'd pronounce differently from her, and I found it rather immature and frankly infuriating. [more inside]

They don't necessarily have to be about anything artsy...it could be any area of expertise. Thank you!

Some time in the mid-to-late '80s, I borrowed a book from my local public library (in the UK). I recall neither its title nor the author's name, but I think it may nevertheless be uniquely identifiable from those details of its plot I can remember. Its protagonist is a genealogist, who is hired to discreetly research the family background of a US presidential candidate. There is an element of cat-&-mouse as unknown individuals try to put a stop to his researches, but he perseveres... [more inside]
My fiancé and I would like to make our first joint gift to charity around the time we get married. It would be nice if the charity is marriage-related in some way. We're already aware of and are considering organizations that promote marriage-equality, but are also looking for other ideas. (For example, we found one that works to prevent child marriage, and others that help survivors of domestic abuse.) Other suggestions -- preferably specific recommendations -- along these lines? US-based would be the most convenient.
I work at a school, and I'm trying to create a Google form to help get information out to parents. We have MULTIPLE means of doing that, though, and the problem is that EACH of the communication modes is handled by someone different. For example, one person is in charge of the website, another is in charge of the electronic sign out front, while another takes care of making afternoon announcements. I've created a form that allows teachers to 1. Type the verbiage they'd like to share, and 2. choose from a list of available media (website, sign, etc.). I'm not smart enough to do the next step. Ideally, I'd like Google Docs to automatically send an e-mail to the appropriate person with the verbiage from each submission. [more inside]
