I've been asked by a university professor to present three separate lectures to a group of graduate students on a relatively arcane -- but not overly complicated -- topic. Each lecture will probably last about an 1.5 hours, not including travel time to and from the campus. The professor mentioned that he has funds available to compensate me for these lectures, but won't give any indication of budget. He's asked me to provide a proposal outlining fees. I haven't done this before, so I don't know whether it's fair to ask for my normal hourly billing rate -- which I'm assuming is probably high. On the other hand, I don't want to do this for free. So my question is... What compensation is reasonable to ask for as a first-time guest lecturer? (Oh yeah: This is an elite private Midwestern University. They aint going broke.)

Should I sign up to be an organ donor? I like the idea of individuals getting my heart, lungs, kidney, liver, eyes, etc. I do not like the idea of having my body sent to a corporation to harvest my tissues and then packaging them and selling them for profit. I've read that this does happen, hospitals and transplant centers can thereby profit from the sales as well. How can one prevent that from happening and yet allow organs to be used by those needing them. My state donation site has a blanket consent form that reads as if my body could be taken to 'another facility' and "tissues" harvested. No mention of by whom, what for, and at what price they would be sold.

Upon the discovery of several live termites attempting to set up shop in my garage wall, I called in a local pest-control company. Following inspection, said company recommended treating the dirt under the garage slab with fipronil (aka Termidor). I have four indoor cats and a fish, and while the termite guys say the fish can stay, they're recommending moving the cats out of the house for the three hours it will take to apply the stuff. Is this really necessary? If so, where the heck can I take four fairly skittish cats for three hours? [more inside]

The transfer happened rapidly and there were many things to take care of, one of which, selling his car, didn't get done. He's leaving day after tomorrow. He needs to sell his car before he leaves. Any ideas on how to do this in Seattle? Are there businesses that take of of this? Thanks

I need to order custom-sized paper bags to be part of the packaging of shipments of bread. The bags need to be large — hence the need to go custom. I'm thinking 12" x 18", and expandable enough to fit a height of 4-5". Most bags I've seen have a flat bottom, but are gusseted to expand — that's what I imagine ordering. Any recommendations on a place that could do this for me? NYC-specific would be great, but I'm willing to order from any company that can do it quickly and at an affordable price. We're talking orders in the 100s or 1000s, but most likely not in the 10,000s — at least to start. I'd need them to print a logo on the bags as well. They'd also need to keep in moisture and not get oily from the bread.

I have managed to reach the age of forty-mumble with no idea how to deal with hair-care products. I shampoo regularly (Head and Shoulders for the dandruff works fine), keep my hair fairly short (but not buzzcut, because my head looks stupid when the hair is too short), and sometimes blow it dry, but all this other stuff - pomade, hair spray, the stuff the salons call 'product' is beyond me. I'd like to know what you liked best when you were a student, either from a contributing or reading standpoint. I'd like to know from school employees/authorities what one needs to be mindful of. And I'd be very glad to know of what I can do to avoid any problems. I'd like to know from teachers about what school newspapers can do for students; and what one could reasonably ask for from the various grades to allow for students to make contributions and so the content is balanced for all ages. I'd love to see links to anything inspiring, and to ideas for content and design and such. So, I'd like a lot of information about stuff I have an idea about, but not much practice with yet. I have noticed over the last week that my sensitivity to caffeine seems to have dramatically increased. Normally, drinking coffee would have no major effects except making me slightly more awake / alert you would expect. But over the last fortnight, it seems that even drinking even a single cup of coffee has become quite unpleasant. 45 minutes later i will feel dramatically over-energised and find concentration difficult and drinking a cup of coffee after dinner at 7.30 will leave me unable to get to sleep until 1:30 or 2am. What would be the best way to create an infective agent that caused hallucinations? I was thinking a virus that modifed serotonin to psilocin - but how exactly would this take place in the cell, and how would a hypothetical virus catalyse that process? Is it realistic for a modern virology lab to design such a virus? I considered a bacterial vector, but I figure that bacterial infection of the CNS would probably just straight-up kill you due to the host response? Perhaps a bacterial species that just hangs out in your gut and squirts out psilocin that it synthesises itself, rather than having to methylate free serotonin? I know a fair bit of biochemistry but not much at all about microbiology, if that helps guide your explanations.

I'm doing a kickstarter art project in which I paint portraits over videochat. I've been testing and demoing primarily with Google Hangouts, which allows mute observers, but I'd really like to be able to have a permanent address at which I can meet subjects and observers. I need to be able to allow multiple users in, but have all but two as observers, or at least the ability to focus on one user. It also would help if you didn't necessarily need to have a google+ account, or a skype or an AIM account, or any particular OS or browser, beyond having a webcam and mic. It should also be free to use, although I might be willing to pay a little to keep the url permanent. The ability to record would be a plus, but I can always use a screencap program to do that. Does anyone know if there's a good client or site that fulfills these needs, that's a little classier than camwhoring? Any experience with tinychat - would it work? Or would you be up for developing something?

So, I watch TLC's What Not to Wear quite often and they always recommend wearing a structured jacket even with casual wear. I'd like to try it, but it's more difficult than it seems. First, I really don't want to pay more than $100 and a lot of the jackets I see online are more than that. Also, I'm an attorney and I do have a lot of suit jackets, but somehow wearing a suit jacket with jeans seems wrong. Like the suit jacket is too formal for jeans. So any advice about finding a relatively inexpensive casual structured jacket would be appreciated. Or if you successfully wear a suit jacket with casual wear let me know about that too. I am female, mid-thirties, and a size 10 or 12.

My parents are being pushed out of their current rental apartment in Northern Virginia and need to locate a new rental by the end of October, but their circumstances are challenging and I need advice on how best to assist them.
My parents are in their 70s and are on a fixed income– a fairly low fixed income– and were forced to declare bankruptcy last year due to significant medical bills. These medical issues also made it difficult for them to maintain their household, resulting in an accumulation of dirt and debris that has forced their current rental complex to issue a polite but firm eviction notice. I am attempting to relocate them much closer to me so that my family and I can provide regular assistance to them, both financial and day-to-day, but they've already been rejected by two rather modest rental complexes (including one at which they previously lived for 25 years). To complicate matters, my mother is in a wheelchair and needs an apartment with few or no barriers (stairs, hills, etc.). Moving them into my home is not an option for a variety of reasons. I'm trying to locate a rental apartment somewhere in Northern Virginia and at this point would take anything. Can anyone tell me where to turn?

A friend sent this picture of a strange plant that he is trying to identify. He found it growing at his campsite almost underneath a tent that he had left up. He has asked a lot of people if they know what it is and no one has identified it yet. The closest anyone has come up with is that it might possibly belong to the same family..Monotropaceae.. as Indian Pipe. He said that it grew in relative darkness under the edge of the tent, probably had next to no water, and sprouted during the heat of August. The location is near Julian, CA about an hour's drive from San Diego, and the tent site is in a tree-shaded canyon high in the Cuyamaca Mountians at 4000 ft. Any ideas?

Most people want to salvage the laminate, I want the opposite. I have a bathroom vanity that is 50"x22" with sink. Three sides have tile on them as backsplash. How do I remove the laminate without wrecking the plywood underneath? I've heard soaking it in tolulene or lacquer thinner or acetone works but wouldn't that soak the wood as well and swell/ruin it (The acetone would evaporate quick though)? I used to be a floor layer so I'm thinking heat. Would a seam sealing iron work? It's basically a flat rectangular iron that can go from low to very high heat. It's safe to use on underlay so I assume plywood could handle it. I don't care about salvaging the laminate top. I just need to put a new one on and I heard that sanding and putting laminate on laminate is asking for trouble. Although I have contractor friends that with the owners permission have used liquid sandpaper and put it on existing laminate and have not had problems, 5-10 years on.

Though I can be broodish and moody at home at times, I keep it in check. People at my workplace find me enjoyable and fun to work with. They find me humorous. I have friends there. Today, one manager out of the blue from another department told me "You are the most negative person I know." I told her in an even tone "That is not too nice a thing to say, you know?" She just rolled her eyes and laughed and said "You're a downer…like Eeyore". Context: She sort of glides from department to department with this air of superiority and says edgy things to people in a joking-but-not-really way. Many don't find her funny. I let her get to me as it cut me deeply. Real deep. Before that I was in a zen mode all day and at peace. How do I deal with interactions with her in the future as I can't change her and I secretly think she likes taking jabs at people. (moderate sociopath?) She is higher in the chain and is liked even higher up as a hatchetwoman and I don't want to be rash with something I might say back. I wish I could buy Thick Skin on ebay or something. It's a huge long list of names, dates, places, and relationships, emailed to me years ago by my mother's cousin. The difficulty I'm having is that the information is organized in a linear fashion, and I'd love to see it in a family-tree type of format so I can better understand (visually) how these people are connected to me. I'm looking for software (free if available) that will allow me to plug in names, dates, and relationships, and will display it in a tree format. Can you recommend a website or service that would allow me to do this? [more inside]

I live in NYC, where there are classes for children starting at birth. Baby yoga and soccer for 18 month olds and visual art as soon as they can stand. Despite being a great fan of Connie Willis, I had to give up on Blackout/All Clear when I was barely a hundred pages into All Clear because it had been such a meandering, repetitive read. (Others have been able to finish it, but share my frustration). Two brief, related questions: 1) Can someone please summarize what happened in the rest of the book? (Yes, SPOILERS!) and 2) What the hell is happening to Willis' editors, given that her novels have been getting more lengthy and repetitive? The Doomsday Book (1993) was perfectly sized for its story. Bellwether (1997) was a little repetitive, but it was relatively short and funny, and I enjoyed it overall. Her 2002 novel Passage, although a satisfying book in the end, was a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, for the first chunk as well. And then she delivered bouncing baby Buicks in the form of Blackout/All Clear this past year. Why? [more inside]

I’m looking for an animation that I saw somewhere on the net (probably YT) this year. If I remember correctly, it’s mostly illustrated, black and white, with pictures and words and arrows used to illustrate key concepts as the narration unfolded. The key feature is that it was really well produced, swooping and rotating as the drawing unfurled. The illustration is simple and fun, even though the subject matter is fairly serious — I think it was about politics, something like… I don’t know, Corporate Personhood. Or maybe not. Anyway, I think the animation was done well after the narration, and the two are unaffiliated. [more inside]

When I'm out with my friend and his cell phone rings which he doesn't want to answer, he sits there (with the phone within easy reach) and lets it ring until the caller gets voice mail (8 or 9 times, distracting and annoying to me), rather than mute the ring. Isn't proper "cell phone etiquette" when you're not going to answer your phone to at least mute the ring so not everybody around has to hear your phone ring a bunch of times?

I'm trying to remember an old (most probably Disney) short feature or possibly an episode of "Wonderful World of Disney" which began with an opening narration, accompanied by pictures of each word the narrator says. I have an old 1st generation iPhone that I left for dead two years ago, after it got wet and stopped working. I put it in a drawer and forgot about it. Eventually, I tried charging it, and it magically came back to life... But with a very peculiar problem: the on-screen image is a mirror image of what it should be. Everything is flipped horizontally, an exact mirror image... But the phone still expects the same touch input! For instance, to wake it from sleep, the slider appears flipped, as a right-to-left slider; but in order to actually wake it up, I have to slide my finger left-to-right. (my question after the jump) [more inside]

I grind my teeth in my sleep. A friend of mine who is an Registered Massage Therapist ("RMT") tells me that even though I have a night guard I'll destroy the discs in my jaw by grinding, that the fact that my jaw clicks when it opens and shuts is VERY BAD, and that I need to get to an RMT pronto. The dentists at the clinic I go to claim they've never heard of massage as a cure for grinding. So I have two questions: is my RMT friend right, and if so, can you recommend a Toronto-area (preferably central or west-end) RMT who has specialized training in TMJ issues?

Does it make sense to take a calcium / magnesium carbonate-type antacid (Rennies, Tums, Rolaids) at bedtime to neutralise the impact the whisky might have on the GI tract, even though I have no symptoms of heartburn or indigestion? I would sort of think it might make no difference at all - that these are sometimes even recommended as a dietary supplement - but I am aware that alcohol is a risk factor in upper GI cancers and I wonder if it might be a useful preventative.

I need the advice of an HR person or labor expert regarding OT pay for exempt employees. I work in Louisiana in an IT field. My company was acquired by another in June 0f 2010. As part of the acquisition process, they changed all employees from non-exempt to exempt (salaried) with the expectation that requirements for overtime were going to be eliminated. Since January 2011, I've logged about 200 hours of OT. I have each item documented in a spreadsheet, and these are legitimate projects that required OT. Am I entitled to any form of compensation? The back pay would be considerable (appr. 10k dollars), but I don't know how to approach the subject with my employer.
