Someone just sang a stupid song, to himself; he sits next to me at work. Which raises a question: Why do songs get stuck in our brains for days? What is the scientific explanation for this phenomena? Is it an affect of modern life on the individual? Do we fear of loneliness?

I'm looking for research on low-literacy writing, how people read and remember different kinds of materials, what kind of materials are most readable to the most people, etc. Names of academic journals or even academic specialties I should be looking at would be helpful. Info on this topic for general audiences (and written accessibly!) are also welcome, if they are based on research. (Much of what I've found so far is based on conjecture, which I already have a ton of).

A group of us students are given the opportunity to go abroad over the Spring Break week in a (predominately)
non-english speaking country. The location is up to us (war zones are of course off limits. I'm unsure of the distance limit, I believe South-East Asia is too far away, and St. Petersburg is the only option for Russia) and the cost is subsidized quite a bit. The purpose of the visit isn't for lounging around and seeing sites though, we will be conducting individual research in order to make a ~50 minute presentation back home.
Obviously this is something that will come from the desires of the group, but I was hoping to get some input from the educated masses here at MeFi so that I could relay it back to the rest of the group.

How can I sync an online calendar feed (xml) with either iCal or Google Calendar? I know I can sync iCal and gCalendar easily through several methods. But what I also need to include is my department's events calendar. I can import it as an iCal or Outlook file, but this is only a one-time option. Once the department's calendar is updated I don't receive the new or changed events. And I suspect if I import the (newer) file again, I will get many duplicates. The calendar has an xml feed I could subscribe to, but can't figure out how to translate this into a calendar that automatically syncs or updates. Willing to consider any options that would lead to the online calendar (.ics, .csv, or .xml file) being auto updated to any calendar application. This would make my life so much easier! Thanks!

Other necessary qualities are an excellent soundtrack and definitely a script that rises above the cliche. Any genre is fine, so long as there is something touching about the romantic link between the protagonists.

Does anyone know the musician, composer, label, publishing company or licensing agency responsible for the music on the
Piracy, It's a Crime advert? This is, ironically, so we can clear a sample for use in a fairly high profile UK music release. We've cleared all the other samples for this record, but we're drawing a blank on who to ask for this piece. Any pointers or clues, however slim or however many steps away from the people who can give us permission to use this music, are extremely welcome.

How to clean unfinished plywood floor. I want to mop and freshen the bare plywood floor in our unfinished attic. I've already swept and vacuumed it.
The floor is not filthy, but there was rodent activity. I'd like to use a solution that sanitizes, if possible. But my priority is not to damage the wood.
There is an oily patch left by the former owners. Smells like they spilled a bottle of lotion. I'm inclined to just mop over that patch and not try to remove the spot. We use the attic for our home gym -- it's not a place where we bring company.

I have firefox (3.6.8) running with 20-30 tabs open, and sometimes when I close it, I fail to realize there is one small pop-up window running as well. The result is whenever I restart firefox, only the pop-up window is restored, and not the window with 30 tabs. Searching through my history works ok to retrieve some tabs, but some tabs were opened weeks ago, and I don't remember all of the tabs I had open. Is there any way to restore all of those missing tabs?

My close friend is about to give birth to a baby girl. I'd love to do things for her (babysit, cook dinners, help with groceries) but since she lives across the country, a gift will have to suffice. She's already had a baby shower where she received swings, slings, pumps, bottles, blankets, tons and tons of pink baby clothing, etc, so I'd rather not get her any more of that stuff. Additionally, I'm her least traditional friend (read: happily unmarried, childless, liberal New Yorker) and I think she's looking forward to getting some sort of "alternative," gender neutral, really different baby gift from me. I'd like to deliver, but I have no ideas.
I'd love some website/store/product recommendations. Where do new moms who hate Baby Gap and gender specific clothes and frilly baby things shop? Thank you!

But does it make financial sense to buy? Everyone apparently says yes, but I don't understand the maths. If prices stay flat, for instance, would it not make more sense to rent and invest the money elsewhere?
I'm really thinking short term, would I be up in, say, 10 years, if everything stays fairly steady. I can't really make the mental leap to factor in the benefit of owning the house in 25 years....

Everything seems to be skeevy door-to-door guys hawking chemical treatments and I used to recall steam cleaning being the way it was done when I was a kid (is that kind still around?). I would like to obey my thirst, but...
I recently realised I don't seem to get thirsty when I should. I had to take a tablet and grabbed a glass of water to do so. As soon as I began drinking I felt desperately thirsty and drank a second glass. But I swear if you'd asked me a minute before, I'd have said I wasn't thirsty.
In
this thread, people are saying it's healthy to drink before you start feel thirst. But I don't seem to feel it much at all.

How do bloggers or community websites deal with comments from new users which are on-topic for the site but off-topic for the current conversation? It happens regularly on my blog. Deletion seems harsh: if the person is interested in the subject it seems like a missed opportunity to get a new member and teach them how to use the internet appropriately. What are some alternatives?

How might I automate that process (given that I don't have admin rights -- work laptop)? Could an AutoHotKey script close a batch of these?

We ran into the following conundrum while distributing source code for some open-source software we produce. Our code is pretty straightforward C++ stuff with makefiles designed for GNU make. We distribute the package as a zip archive. Works on most systems (Linux, Windows, MacOS, FreeBSD and others). Now, zip stores and unzip restores the file timestamps. Problem is, if someone downloads the archive in an earlier time zone than the one in which it was produced, the
unarchived files have a timestamp in the future.

The reason I would like a tablet computer is that (in some classes) I work through problems (including circling and scribbling) with student input. An added issue is that I have a slight tremor, so I would like forgiving software or a large screen. (The iPad has too small a screen and is designed for touch, not writing.) I can use any OS. Any advice?

Could they possibly be expecting the salary requirement to be in its own document? Or can it be included in the cover letter? I am concerned about getting immediately screened out if I don't have a separate salary document.

Do you use the Google Chrome browser? Try this: Open the history page, and search for a term. The resulting list will include not just the pages that have the term in their page's title or URL; it will also include pages that have the term in the
actual text.
This indicates that somewhere, Chrome is actually storing the text of all web pages you visit. (This is backed up by the fact that the search-results page shows you snippets from the results.) So here's the thing: I want to see the
whole page of cached text, not just snippets.

This morning at work, I was in a one-on-one meeting with a valued (and, yes, attractive) female colleague. While we were talking, she caught me looking up her skirt (yes, it was blatant). I looked up, and realized I was busted.
At that point, she tugged her skirt down, rolled her eyes slightly, and got up and left (muttering an excuse that she had to "make a call").
I'm still really mortified that this happened. What should I do now? Should I say something to her? Apologize? Ignore the fact that this encounter ever happened? What's the least awkward way of proceeding, knowing that we'll likely be working together for a lot longer?
Men: Have you ever gotten busted this way? What did you do?
Women: Have you ever been in this position? Did you lose your respect for the peeper, or do you generally assume that most dudes are trying to peek at you whether you notice or not?
Any advice would be valued. (If it matters, I'm male, she's female, we're both straight, and are about the same age.)

Being a single parent or even in dyad parenting seems like too much responsiblity...but being the 3rd or 4th parent (to go to soccer games, PTA meeting, car pool, make lunchs) sounds like a responsibility i could handle. I don't live in a community with children around so i can't offer up my co-parent services and it also sounds a bit creepy being 37 and wanting to babysit. Want to move to Europe. Understand many have done it before, but let me give more detail and then ask for advice.
We're both in our early 30's, single (no kids) and have high-paying jobs, but ready to leave the corporate world. Both are debt free and have a good nest egg with zero commitments here.
What we'd like to do is move to a mid-size town/city in Germany to start with and rent a furnished apartment for three months or so and just live. We would be very frugal, but like any single men, would like to meet European women and just have a good time dating around. Then, move to another country and repeat..and so on for about a year.
In thinking it through, I'm wondering if it's really feasible. I was hoping if we split expenses and live cheaply, we could do it for about $1k/month each...if we avoid the big, tourist filled cities. That way we could immerse ourselves in the local cultures and get to know people as well. My questions:
1) Is this absolutely ridiculous?
2) Is there any chance of picking up odds/ends kind of work here and there in Europe to fill the reserves up? While we have healthy bank accounts, we want to spend little as possible.
Any comments are much appreciated. Casting a wide net at this point to get any advice you are willing to give. Looked around the net, but love the meta-commenters the most...always useful answers.

Thanks!

I'm 28 and I recently found out I most likely have a serious condition I need treatment for. It will almost certainly involve a urologist and possible (minor) surgery (probably in-office). I have no health insurance, make about 40k a year, but have very little discretionary income. How do I go about this?

Help me understand hair care chemistry. When I look at the list of ingredients on bottles of conditioner, what ingredients should I avoid. I can't stand the 'waxy' feeling I get from some conditioners. My old favorite standby conditioner changed formulas recently and it now has the dreaded waxy ickiness. NOT looking for specific product recommendations, only for
ingredients to avoid or possibly ingredients to look for.

I have catastrophic health insurance for the catastrophes. But until I reach that $3000 deductible, I'd really like to pay less than I currently am for checkups and other simple doctors visits.
For example, I recently went in for an ear infection. My doctor took a look and prescribed an antibiotic. It took 10m and I got a bill for $200. I'm not here to complain about how expensive health care is -- that's pretty well established and has been done plenty already -- but what are my more affordable alternatives?

I have about 10-15 pounds to lose and am already on a slow but steady diet/exercise regime. However I was just sent an online deal where I'd have the option of buying 12 sessions of RF laser body contouring (similar to Velashape) for only $200 (as opposed to over 2 grand.) Is it worth it to try?

I've been tasked at school to photograph a negative emotion. I had a plan in place which broke to bits when I forgot my camera at school over the weekend. I need to shoot something tomorrow, but I'm having trouble being more creative than some crude and banal ideas for photographs of fear. I can't find inspiration online - all I come up with is crappy stock photography. Can you please point out for me good online and free resources on scene staging in films, resources on photographing emotions or good examples of emotional photos?

I need to send an MP3 music file to a number of email addresses. I want to do this by directing people to a download on a web link, rather than emailing the (large) file direct.
I also want to be able to password-protect the file in that link (either the file or the link), so the music doesn't get passed around beyond the list of recipients.
Does anyone know of any good resources for this?
Thanks, oh wise ones.

Say a very light, very healthy person took a dive from some stupidly high altitude, and spread themselves out into a skydiving position so that they just reached their minimum terminal velocity.
Would it be at all possible that this person could survive the drop if they landed in the sea, assuming they quickly rearranged themselves into a more streamlined diving position just before impact?

I’m physically and mentally exhausted and I don’t know how to have a restful vacation anymore. For years I’ve come home from our typical vacations tired and stressed out by too much planning, too much decision making, too much driving and/or flying, and a wife who thinks we have to fill each day with sightseeing from dawn to dusk. This year we only have a week in mid-September and I’m looking for some ideas and suggestions for a more relaxing vacation that’s within about a six-hour drive of western NY.

Camping in Alaska: I'm looking to camp at the Eklutna Lake campgrounds 3 weeks from now on way to a 4 day sojourn into Denali State Park. However, I can't reserve a spot in advance. How likely is it that there will be no free campgrounds available, being slightly after the end of the summer season? What are some similar quality campgrounds in the "between Anchorage & Denali" zone if Eklutna is fully booked?

I want to learn as much as possible about the psychology of purposely forming new habits (like exercising each day) or sticking to something which requires daily work (like learning a language). I am especially interested in the role that social pressure of peers can play in a person's success (Alcoholics Anonymous, study partners, even the recent findings that
a person's weight is related to the weight of those close to them may be examples). Books, articles, jumping off points -- academic or otherwise -- would be very much appreciated!
