I am having a weird problem with Foldershare. I was able to set everything up so that I can share a folder between my desktop and laptop (both are connected to the internet via an AirPort Extreme Base Station), but now when I sync it only goes one way -- from my desktop (iMac running OS X 10.4) to my laptop (running XP). Anything I fix on the mac shows up instantly on the laptop, but everything I fix on the laptop, or ghost p2p files I double click on the Mac, get caught in the queue and the status switches wildly between "queued" "all matches currently busy" "idle" and "listening" in the activity window on the mac and they are not visible on the xp laptop activity window. Also, all ports are reporting as blocked, despite my turning off the Mac firewall. I tried Foldershare support and they gave me the standard settings FS should operate with and told me to contact the manufacturer of the router. Applecare said the Airport doesn't block any ports. Any ideas? I googled and couldn't find anyone that was having this issue... Thanks in advance.

I'm completely baffled by Nikon's DSLR strategy and I'd like to understand a few things better: first they create the DX line and seem to indicate that cropped is there to stay, now they go full frame. What should a serious film photographer who wants to go DSLR and already owns a bunch of excellent manual focus Nikon lenses do now? I also find baffling that they're not teling who manufactures their full-frame sensors -- don't potential customers have the right to know who makes the heart of the really expensive camera they may buy? Is there any reason for concern if my maid, a legal resident, just asked permission to report her bi-weekly payments from me on her Section 8 income report?
My maid called this evening to inquire as to whether she can include my bi-weekly payments to her in her Section 8 (Los Angeles) income report. She is a legal resident but not a citizen. Other than tax implications for her, are there any issues that I should be aware of now that this previously non-broached issue has been broached (e.g., tax or legal)? My options are as follows: (1) say no and let her continue working; (2) say yes and let her continue working; or (3) politely inform her that her services are no longer required. She has only been cleaning my apartment for two months and came highly recommended by a friend. Obviously option (2) is preferable but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I watched him point a remote control at the exit of the wash and initiate a car wash two different times for testing purposes, I assume. My question is, if I had the code and it was an IR remote is it possible to program a universal remote to send that code and activate the carwash in the same manner? Searching Google for Laserwash codes didn't help me much.

Does anyone know about the sauce/pudding that I'm referring to and do you happen to have a recipe for it?

DIY fantasy toys -- I've been playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii, and my 2-year-old loves to watch and play along, to the point of sticking a foam sword down the back of shirt and running around with a Nerf slingshot and fishing pole. He turns 3 in September and in addition to his "nutritional" presents, I thought I would also get/make him some fantasy-enabling stuff. What are some existing toys that do a good job of mimicking Zelda-esque accoutrements, and/or what should be avoided, and/or what's easiest to make myself? An even bigger issue is finding "safe" stuff for him to swing his sword at ... some kind of indoor/outdoor monsters that are at least a foot tall or so. I can see making something out of pillows, or lampshades, or even buying a cheap toy if it's properly durable. Any ideas?

I have an extremely complicated relationship with a person I consider the love of my life. We failed miserably at our most recent (and 4th) try at making it work, so we're trying to do post-break up things differently this time -- in hopes we can get closure FOR REAL. There are more details inside, but my questions are: Is talking/keeping in touch post-breakup the stupidest idea ever? How do you accept the fact that you're in-love and always will be, but that you can't be together? How do you accept the failures/incompatiblities and move on without thinking things like, "oh the circumstances sucked and we just didn't get a fair shot"? And perhaps most importantly, how do you work to remain close without secretly praying it will eventually work out? I'm posting this because I need advice from people who have experienced similar situations, but I would also love any suggestions on relatable books or films. [more inside]

Here in Oxford, every second lamp post has a coded sign on it, indicating that there is a movie filming location nearby. Sometimes, it's obvious which movie is involved -- e.g. 'LWS LOC' refers to the TV series 'Lewis'. In other cases, it's pretty hard to work out -- e.g. 'The Golden Compass' was signed by a jumble of letters that I've forgotten ('ICHR LOC' or similar). I remember seeing a similarly obscure code on Santa Monica Pier. I'd like to know what movies are being filmed where. Is there an online resource that would tell me which location code refers to which movie? I couldn't find this information in the IMDB.

I woke up this morning and felt GREAT. Not just physically well but emotionally too. I felt motivated to do my morning workout, actually spoke with my father instead of the usually morning grunts, sang aloud in the car to the slug line (HOV rideshare) and was in a general all-around-good mood. I kid you not. At one point while getting dressed I thought "today is the first day of the rest of my life" HA!! Crazy I know! I was actually thinking of ways to be productive and it wasn’t even 6 in the morning! My question is... Why are there ants setting up nests in my pot plants?! Every time I water my lavendar, Geraldton Wax (Aust native) and my mint bush, ants start pouring out of the ground in their hundreds. I suspect they are also making the dirt in my pots 'hard' - the water seems to just run off it instead of soaking in. I have tried stabbing the dirt with a chopstick around the plants to airate the soil and get some water down to the roots, but the ants persist. Any help/ suggestions?
I found a relative bargain on a super comfortable rattan couch. It's still real expensive, but, at half price, it's conceivably within my splurge budget. And I love the couch. The problem is it's going in a room with a steam-powered radiator, and will sit quite close to that radiator. And someone knowledgable tells me that the moist heat of a radiator will ruin (or at least hasten the demise of) the rattan. I'd hate to see that happen, particularly at this price! [more inside]

During a visit to my mother's fiancée's family in South Africa nearly 14 years ago, we picked up an interesting poster. If memory serves, it was large (perhaps 5x4) and showed a slow-shutter-speed closeup of a dove flying towards the viewer. Above the dove was written "The South African Police:" and below the dove it read "We're here for you". We thought this was hilarious, as all three of us are black and at the time, the South African police force was not known to be exactly warm and friendly. The poster has since been lost during our numerous moves, and my mother never married the gentleman. But I'd like to find the poster. Does anyone remember this or know where I can look to get it?

Anyone know of a digg/reddit/mefi type of site that tracks entended magazine-type pieces like you might find in the nyt magazine or the new yorker? I really enjoy reading extended length, in-depth kinds of articles through the course of a day as opposed to surfing many smaller links or articles. Some kind of categorizing would be nice, also. Ideas?

I have a vintage, formica-topped dinette set that I put out for a yard sale over the weekend. In the places that were exposed to the sunlight (i.e. not covered by the cash box or other items which were for sale) the yellow formica top turned to a smokey yellow color. The places that were covered are still pure yellow like they were before. Can anyone give me a solution to returning the smokey parts back to their original, bright color? [more inside]

I have a couple of ongoing problems at work and at home that require a lot of work and attention to detail. This is quite stressful for me and my family. I need to get involved in family recreational activities because otherwise both I and they will get stressed out. Nonetheless, I can't help feeling irritated and angry by these activities, even if I am the one suggesting them, because they feel like a waste of time and energy compared to the problems that need sorting out. How can I change how I feel about these things?

When I was a kid in the 70's, I was an avid solver of a series of mazes published in books by an author with a Russian name (I remember it as Vladimir something). They were the kind of paperback books sold in the games section of bookstores, that you were supposed to write in like you do with crossword puzzle books. The mazes were simple, black-and-white, in a variety of shapes, and not gimmicky, just quite challenging (they were intended for grownups, not kids). Does anyone remember these books and can help me find them again?

I am a father of a soon to be 14y/o son and an 11 y/o girl. Both me and my wife lost our fathers when we were about 10y/o (hers died, mine split) so we are blazing new territory here. We are basically clueless as far as how we should not only discipline but simply how to act or know what to expect in terms of what is normal for both our kids and ourselves with our kids. Is there anything out there that can be used as a guide to help us understand how to parent our children without having to pay someone to attend a touchy-feely conference? [more inside]
My wife and I will be moving stateside from Bermuda next year. We will be moving into an empty house with NOTHING except outdated wardrobes and cash. With that said, we will be acquiring a lot of stuff. We will need cars, furniture, appliances, electronics, art, tools, clothes, insurance, etc. etc. How can we maximize our investments in all this stuff? What is your opinion on getting good deals in each of these categories? Our financial planner suggested we incorporate to get some tax write-offs. Another friend said to look into SwapLease. Yet another said to buy all of our furniture in North Carolina. If you were starting with nothing, how would you approach it? Should I walk into Best Buy and tell the manager to make me a deal? Should we buy used cars? Hit garage sales? Buy fine art and antiques? Get a part-time job at the Gap? Where and how can I find the best deals / best investments?

No, I don't have a car or any friends who live near there.

Let's say I want to film an amateur, feature-length documentary. I know I need therapy, and I intend to get it as soon as my health insurance comes through in a few weeks. I'm under a lot of strain from a pending divorce and various related financial issues. I'm interested in the views of anyone who has ever owned (or knows someone who has owned) a laundromat, with a focus on such things as start-up costs, how profitable (generally speaking) they can be and what I should know about the laundromat trade (perks, pitfalls etc) before going in.
