We're looking for a way to bring her here that will let her work (we're both far too poor to make things work with an F-2). Right now, her entering the Green Card lottery seems to be the best option, but is there anything we're not thinking of?

My wife and I were watching the first episode of LeCarre's
Smiley's People. Afterwards, we were talking about how the Cold War was such a big part of growing up, to the degree that my wife was taken back by the appearance of a *Russian* basketball player on a lunchbox promotion. Ok, so my question is, if the cold war was such a huge part of US history, why does it seem to have slipped so quickly from our national consciousness?

Network routing is being provided by Mac OS X's Internet Sharing feature, and while the DHCP log shows numerous DHCP DISCOVER requests from the Slingbox, no IP address is ever assigned. My boyfriend has about 23 long boxes of comics (22 are full). He still gets a stack of comics every Wed. He won't stack the boxes over 2 high.
Is there any thing that can be done to store these boxes so the room they are in doesn't look like a comic book shop? Our area floods, so the basement is out. Our house is a converted cape, so there is no attic.
I don't want him to get rid of them, or stop buying them. I just would like to find a way to camouflage them. PLEASE.

OK. So I have five movie clips on the stage named b1 - b5. When the user clicks on one the other four need to gotoAndPlay. I could write a function for one object then cut and paste and just change the names, but that seems inelegant. What I think I need to do is generate an array containing the five objects, then, when the user clicks on one of them, that one is removed from the array and triggers a function that loops through the remaining clips in the array and does the goto. Does that make sense? And if so, how would I do it? And if not, what is a better way? In other words, user clicks on movie named b1 and b2-b5 do something. user clicks on movie named b3 and b1,b2,b4, and b5 do something. Thanks!

VMS or something like that... is that worth having or does it seriously slow down the system?

I have always been an a emotionally sensitive guy, and I guess being this way has its pros and cons. In my current and past relationships, my emotions really seem to get the best of me. When I am single, I usually have a firm grasp over my emotions, but when I am in a relationship, my emotions become heightened. I am usually very sensitive to the moods of my significant others, to the point that if they are in a bad mood, I also get in a bad mood. And a lot of times, I think I wrongfully attribute the reason for their bad moods to myself, and therefore get somewhat insecure. I don't think this is very healthy. My current girlfriend thinks its great that I am sensitive some of the time, but not great at other times. It drives me crazy when she says "I am too sensitive" when she may tease me about a topic that I am sensitive about, but she feels is funny or harmless. I don't like feeling like a wimp, but I also don't like feeling like my sensitivities are unwarranted. I guess I want to figure out how to be more disciplined with my emotions while at the same time not becoming a heartless boyfriend. Help me become emotionally mature and intelligent.

I've been wearing glasses for about 10 years, and mainly need them for driving. I don't need to wear them every day, but do if I have a pair of glasses I wear them. Currently I borrow my wife's spares but this has to stop because I have a poor track record with looking after spectacles, and I'm toying with the idea of getting contacts instead. In particular because I'd like not to have to bother with prescription sunglasses as well. Is it worth it?

Let's assume
(no soapbox rants, please!) global warming is a reality, the ice covering Greenland is melting, and the ocean's levels are rising. If I own a home and land which, according to
this map, would be underwater, what--if anything--would the government do? I live near a major (federal) interstate, two major shipping ports, and a rail corridor linking the two. San Francisco and Oakland International Airports would also be underwater. What happens? Would they build a gigantic dike, like New Orleans and Holland? Is my home and the land on which it's built a total loss? If so, insurance-wise, is this considered an "Act of God"? If I was to put my home on the market tomorrow, must I declare global warming and the rising ocean levels as a possibility for flooding?

Back in my OS 9 days, I played a game in which you controlled a factory. Raw materials would come out of a pipe somewhere, and you had to control the conveyor belts, chutes, and other machines in the factory to make a certain quota of items by the end of the day. Incorrectly made items, of course, were deducted from your score. Can anyone else remember this game, and (even better) tell me where to find it?

How can one tell the production history of a microwave oven? I bought a GE JES1656SJ at Best Buy today. Got it for a good price. Went home, Googled the model number. Very few hits. Nothing at epinions or consumerreview. Not sold at amazon. On the GE website itself, I found its page (with some effort). On this page it said "Sold Only at Lowe's" (the chain hardware/appliance stores). The fact that I bought this elsewhere notwithstanding, is there anyway to find out if this is an old/defective/dangerous/unpopular model? Is it unusual to produce specific models for certain outlets? The oven is still in the box pending the results of my investigation. Thanks.

Looking for a time travel film: I rented it in the early 90s but it seemed to be an 80s flick. Took place somewhere warm, probably CA to save on budget. I recall a strong element of family in it, but it's obviously not BTTF. I think it had two brothers (cousins? best friends?) heading back to the 1950s. I remember them in a nice old car with chrome and fins, but for all I know I may be making that up. It was as much drama as it was anything else. Sorry I don't have more to go on.

The incidence of petty crime, particularly vandalism of flower planters (even in daylight), is up lately in our (small city) neighborhood. The ratio of absentee landlords to owner-occupied has been increasing over the years, and the quality of life in the neighborhood is slowly declining (e.g., more trash in the street, petty vandalism, graffiti, outright theft).
Fundamentally, the solution is economic, and the city is slowly working on that. But in the short term, what are effective crime reduction methods that can be implemented at the neighborhood level (i.e., we can't direct the police to patrol more or install more street lights, but we could organize a "neighborhood watch")?

The UK based company I don't work for is not a fairly large online financial information provider. Understandably we receive no traffic at all from Google and other search engines for searches related to various company names. Recently I discovered that we catalogue all the search terms by which people reach our site and do a WHOIS search on their IP address using public WHOIS servers. We then search this information for things like "users from ms.com searching for takeover and at least one other word." Then we buy shares in whatever company people from ms.com are looking for along with takeovers. We have no relationship with any of the companies involved other than that we get to see their search terms. So far there is a definite correlation between these things, and we have made money. Could this qualify as insider trading? We are exploiting non publically available information that's for sure.

Recommend a good cycling shoe-pedal combo
I just started biking again and i'm really loving it. I have a mid-range hybrid bike, nothing fancy and I don't ride compeditively but more for fun and exercise, all on paved road.
I'm looking to buy cycling shoes and pedals. What i'm looking for in a pedal is one that can serve both a bike shoe and a regular shoe. The guy at the bike shop showed me something that was a hybrid by shimano but i dont remember the model. As far as a shoe, I dont need anything fancy or expensive but not crappy and cheaply made either.
Can anyone give me some recomendations? Also, is there a reliable bike gear review site that has user reviews?
Thanks!

We'd love, however, to come up with a way for them to submit them electronically. How could we pull this off? Would Google Video work? Would Streamload be reliable? YouTube? (FYI: there are 75 students and each of them turn in 7 projects through out the semester). Our budget is modest ($50/month at the most).

I have been, for some time now, looking for a space for my retail store. I had to sign a contract with a broker, since in the area I was looking you can only have one broker working for you. I have seen a few spaces and have been in contract talks with one of them, but that fell through (not because of the broker).
I also asked the broker about a SPECIFIC space, but they said everything was taken and nothing was available there. Later I called myself and found out more information, and soon contacted a landlord willing to lease me a space.
I like my broker and think they tried their best, but I need to break the contract so I can go on and deal with this space myself. It is no problem to cancel the contract I just need to send a letter.
I guess my question is, how can I let my broker go, without harboring or sending any bad feelings?

I'm almost 31 and though I have had some achievements in life they're not spectacular. Most of the time when I see a biog in the paper the 'achiever' was already doing well from a very early age.
To give me hope that achieving at this stage in life is possible I would like to hear of people who went on to make great achievements relatively late in their life (ie 30+) with not much happening before then. These can be anybody, famous or people you know, in any field, both creative and career wise. I haven't defined great achievement but I mean something rather outstanding (unusual I suppose) rather than 'passed my driving test' or 'got married'.

This is embarassing: I would like to know if there is any surgery ( cosmetic or otherwise) to remove excessive rolls of skin I have on my belly after a serious amount of weight loss. With clothes on I look fine, but undressed I am so self conscious. I am very small, and my belly used to be much bigger, (pregnancy etc.) but now that it isn't there is nowhere for all that extra (stretched) skin to go. Any thoughts?

So after my water heater started leaking (a water heater that was located curiously in the attic), I've lost about half the ceiling in my bathroom to water damage.
Does anyone know a reasonably priced and RELIABLE handyman/contractor in the Tampa Bay area? I'm in North Tampa, near Lutz, if that helps. Speed is of the essence, since there is a giant, AC sucking hole in the ceiling.
The water heater has also been replaced already. I just need the ceiling fixed.

My older brother was born with a medical condition that I would like more information about.
Being from a third world country does not help finding a label or diagnosis for it, so I will try to explain it as best as I can and hopefully someone will pinpoint it.
I have been a US resident for a while and I am unfortunately not with him to see a doctor and find the answers that I need. From what I know it is incurable but who knows, maybe there is something out there that can help him out.

I am just starting the process of applying for a home loan.
I've attended a first-time home buyer seminar in my city, read tons of books and have done my homework regarding mortgage options, home buying process, etc. I have an excellent credit score, and one debt (car payment), and make a decent salary. I've been advised to deal with a direct lender as I could get better rates, and fewer fees with them than through a mortgage broker.
My problem is, I get virtually no response from the lenders. They take my information to start the pre-qual/pre-approval process, then nothing. They don't call back, and don't return my calls. This has happened 4 times in the last month.
Has anyone else experience this? I live in Southern California (LA/Southbay area); do lenders here not need the business? I have never seen this issue addressed in home buying books or websites.
Any insight, advice or recommenations?

She just told me that she let one of my coworkers stay with her after he got out of recovery, she was keeping it a secret (because it's weird, and because she was still his boss for half the time), she just kicked him out yesterday. I knew he was in recovery, but I didn't know the details (or which drugs). He is a long-term crack addict, went into rehab for a week, but is now back at work and back partying every night (she isn't sure if he's back on drugs, but I'd assume so). His work has been erratic for the year I've been there, and he's prone to aggressive, random, ten minute rants. He's late for everything, snappy, sleazy, and totally inappropriate in the office...
