Do you have suggestions for how to get rid of them? I may get cat traps from the humane society, and someone suggested sprinkling coffee grounds. Are there any other good ways to repel cats with something that is nontoxic for dogs?

It it unwise to bank on a prospective employer not calling my references unless I am interviewed? I'm applying for a job that is admittedly a long shot, and I’d rather not call and ask people to be my references unless I am actually in the running (for various snowflake reasons detailed at length within). Is it a horrendous faux pas to list references without asking their permission, if I'm fairly certain I won’t get called for an interview? On the other hand, is it a horrendous faux pas not to send references with my resume and cover letter, when the job posting specifically asks for them? [more inside]

I was fired from a retail job back in 1994. I worked there 6 months. The firing could have been argued but I left. I have a job interview tomorrow requiring a background check. I don't want to lie but I don't want to tell the truth as it is so damn long ago and a ridiculous thing....and that job is long long long gone from resume replaced with great work and academic history. Does a routine background check dig up that old dirt? Thanks for your time and have a good week.

I just finished sewing a kimono-style bathrobe out of 100% woven cotton fabric. When it came out of the dryer, the belt, bottom hem, and front band were wrinkled enough that I had to iron them. Ironing a bathrobe is not what I signed up for! Short of taking the robe apart to put interfacing in to prevent wrinkles, is there anything I can do? In case it matters, I have a HE front-loading washer and the matching dryer; the robe was washed in warm water and dried on normal heat, then removed immediately. The fabric was washed once before being cut, and I was scrupulous about laying the pieces out on the grain.

I encountered this phenomenon from my practice as a graphic designer: - it looks as though people with narcissistic streak and big ego - people who have problem with empathy - they also have a problem with negative space. They are anxious about it, they don't understand it and want to fill it with information. They don't "experience" beauty directly , but instead, they form "narrative" about it. I often encountered this while working with medical professionals (where narcissism is quite common). Is this something I imagined or is this something that's actually confirmed in psychology/psychiatry?

It seems like a lot of what psychologists do is provide tools for processing troublesome beliefs, experiences, etc. in a healthy way. Are there books that the hive mind would recommend that teach some of these tools to non-psychologists for the purpose of being able to use these techniques in their own lives? I've envisioning something less dense than a college textbook but more rigorous than a walk through the self-help section at a bookstore. Recommendations are welcome for general techniques/tools as well as topically oriented works, such as books focused on techniques specific for relationships, money problems, or other common sources of stress and conflict.

I have been playing around with Audacity recently trying to understand a bit more about sound in general. One question I'm having trouble wrapping my head around is: How does Tone and Frequency relate? For instance, the 2600 Hz is a high-pitched tone. Does that mean that anything that produced that same tone would be at 2600 Hz? And does it mean that for the entire range of human hearing -- all of those Hz -- that one tone corresponds to a particular frequency? I am looking for some basic explanation or even tools to play with...

While watching the Croatian National team play in the UEFA Cup, it occurred to me that 9 of 11 starters had names ending in 'ic.' As a big tennis fan as well, I realize this is also true of virtually every male and female player from Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia. I'm asking purely out of curiosity, and was wondering if anybody could shed some light on how this one specific suffix became so common. Likewise, I'm interested in knowing if unto itself it means anything, as well as just about any other relevant info that the hive might offer--for example, why is the suffix so common among southern Slavs, but less common among non-southern Slavs? Thanks.

Over 20 years ago I read a novel, but can remember neither the author nor the novel title. I think it was an English author, I think the word "Spring" was in the title, and I think it was set in the post-colonial time period in India. I do remember it was a story about a young teenage English girl who met and fell in love with an Indian teenage boy, and they thought she might be pregnant, so they ran away to Varanasi/Benares together to get married in spite of the disapproval of their families. About 15 years ago or so it was made into a TV movie and shown on either PBS or Masterpiece Theater. I've googled for "novels set in Varanasi," "post-colonial novels set in Benares," etc and came up empty. I'm confident I would recognize the title if I saw it, and it is not listed here, here, or here. Do these (rather minuscule, sorry) details ring a bell for anyone? Thank you!

Recently when I print with Firefox, it tries to squeeze everything into 1 page. The text is TINY. I have tried "Print 100%", Scale to Fit, Print regular in preferences (HP Laserjet 4200). I have tried to print with different drivers. Nothing I do save "Print 200+%" works, and that's absolutely absurd to have to do each time. Chrome prints things fine, but I really don't want to have to use a different browser each time... Anybody have an idea? Any info I seem to find on the web comes up with old FF2 and FF3 printing issues. Nothing with a more current version on the mozilla forums.

Can anyone help me track down this factoid (if it's even true)? Way before podcasts existed, I remember hearing a radio host or music pundit call Barbra Streisand a career annihilator (though I think he had a catchier name for it). He claimed that she held a unique position in pop music: that every number-one charting artist who released a duet with her a) saw that duet reach number 1 on the charts, and b) never had another number 1 hit again. I have never been able to find this statement again anywhere. [more inside]

Fraking-Touchpad filter: My Dell Inspiron Touchpad completely ceased to work at all last night. Me and the Dell tech guy ran some diagnostics, and ascertained that it is NOT a hardware problem, it is an OS problem (I have Windows 7). With her black MacBook on its last legs, my sister is going to be getting a new 13" MacBook Air soon. The stock 256GB model includes a 1.8GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz processor and 4GB of (1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM) memory. The build-to-order options are a 2.0GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz and 8GB of RAM for $90 each (Education Store prices). Knowing that processor and memory upgrades aren't possible later on, would either of these options make a big difference in performance? She uses it mostly for Office documents, some CS5 work, streaming video, web browsing and music and is hoping to keep it as her main computer for at least 4 years. Thanks for any input.
Someone stole a potted plant off of my back porch. I'm assuming it was a neighbor or guest of a neighbor, because our alley is locked off. Anyway I am pretty sad and angry (who steals a plant??? I greatly enjoy running the Hash, but I don’t like the songs (pdf); they are just way too crude for my tastes. I have asked around and everyone assures me that all the hashes in my country—even those that are more “family friendly”—have the same songs. For those of you with hash experience, do you find this to be true worldwide? Any other suggestions on how to get my goofy running, singing, dancing, shouting fix without having to sit through the X-rated lyrics? (There was a similar question about this a few months ago specific to D.C., but I'm looking for more of a general perspective on hashing.)

I've been with my boyfriend in an exclusive relationship for 2 months, including dating time. Since early in the dating phase, I have noticed unusual behaviors from him. It has bothered me enough and I have made a plan to discuss with him. When he is out with me, he wouldn't answer his phone. Of course, he answers calls from his mom, sisters, friends...but there is a certain call he wouldn't answer. Without looking to see who's calling, he said "it's not important." But then (more than 1 hour later) he would check the voicemail/text and replied by text. My gut tells me it's from a girl and they could be going out together. Lately, his phone is always on vibrate. I see him only once a week due to distance and because I'm busy. [more inside]

For some reason it captured my imagination when I first found it posted to the web several years ago. The poster only knew that they had found it "somewhere on the web". It looks like there's a whole story there - maybe a sword (broken?) and some coins among the rocks, and a somewhat dejected looking young (?) humanoid sitting on the ground. Anyone know the origin or back story?

An elderly family friend has an original poster (known as BG074) and program from the 1967 Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead concert at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto. He is interested in selling the poster and program, and I've offered to help out. According to Wolfgang's Vault, "BG074 is among the rarest of posters. There are hard to verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but whether the posters were seized or simply put away by contented Canadians, this summer concert made a big impression." Accordingly, I've seen auctions and online memorabilia stores listing this poster in the $5,000 and up range, and the program for close to $1,000. What is the best way to authenticate and sell these items? I contacted Wolfgang's Vault but they don't normally purchase individual items, and the art dealers I've been in touch with don't deal with rock memorabilia. Is there a Sotheby's of rock? Is eBay even worth considering?

I’m trying to get a non-profit “maker space” started. Our goal is to provide affordable access to a large workspace with nearly every kind of tool you can imagine (machining, woodworking, welding & metal fab, 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, electronic test gear, etc). We’re also going to provide training and an opportunity to meet and maybe collaborate with other artists, craftsmen, inventors and “makers.” I’m trying to develop a strong argument about how we can benefit our community and local businesses. So I’m looking for both input and help finding specific examples of how other maker spaces have done that. [more inside]

Two charcoal drawings were left behind when both my parents recently transitioned. We are attempting to establish their value. Both appear to be very old, Dutch in nature and both feature large sailboats and people "working" on shore. Each is about 36 inches long and about 30 inches tall. The artists name appears to be Janssam or Janssau...the "end-swirl" of the last letter of the name curves up and hovers over the name, back to the first "s". I have a photo of one drawing but haven't yet figured out how to post a picture on this site. Any help or suggestion toward identifying these pictures is greatly appreciated.

Additionally, anything worthwhile on the city of Newark (I've watched Brick City, which was the primary inspiration for the setting). Many thanks to all in advance!
