Usenet was my first real online community -- it's coming up on twenty-five years (!) since I pushed my first clump of snarky, juvenile flamage out into the aether. I'd like to download copies of my old messages from Google Groups, but they don't make it easy, and worse, a lot of what Google used to have isn't showing up in searches anymore...

Can someone recommend a camera flash for a Canon XTi for around $120? I really want the speedlite 430 but its just out of my budget right now and I'm still basically a beginner. Is there anything comparable at that price that still offers a swivel head that can go in all 4 directions (as in, left right up down)? Can I still get good results from something at that price? the guys at the camera store are really trying to upsell me and tell me that anything at my price range will basically suck.

Challenge: find me that movie/tv movie for children. I remember this one from my childhood, but don't remember the title. Can you help? It rains every day except once a year. All of these children are in school and looking forward to the sun coming out. One little girl is locked in a closet by some mean bullies and misses the sun coming out. She misses the grass growing, the flowers blooming, and all the frolicking. The end is her running through the flowers/rain after she got out somehow. Anyone remember this? Probably late 70s or early 80s.

I have been tossing around the concept of polyphasic sleeping for years now and the only thing that is stopping me from converting is this question.
How would this affect my body?
There seems to be no real mention on articles covering polyphasics of how this affects your body. Plenty say that you get enough sleep for your mind, although as I would like to form my own opinion on the mind part, my issue is that they are quick to say that the other "Five something" hours of non REM sleep are essentially wasted.
My hypothesis is that you need these hours of downtime for your body itself to regenerate. If my hypothesis is correct is there any ways to ensure a rest like state for my body while in a waking cycle during full on uberman style polyphasics?

In the past, I've had great success booking domestic flights 2-3 days before. This time, we will be booking 2 round trip tickets. I just booked a flight from the western US to Montreal for my husband, three weeks ahead, as we found the planes were filling up rapidly. We didn't get much of a deal.
Standby is not on option as I'll be flying with an autistic person.
Any and all hive-mind thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

There is a hearing next month to determine custody of the child, and she doesn't want to lose the kid to what is likely going to be an abusive father. Lawyer up, right? Problem is, not a lot of money. Can you point me to any organizations in California that provide pro-bono / sliding-scale / low-cost legal aid services for abused women?

Help me learn as much as I can about the history and theory of contemporary art. I would at this point, love to take up a full time course for two years on the above, but for several reasons I cannot do so. I can however, spend 3-4 hours daily to read and study. I also spend almost three months of the year travelling to various biennales, museums and collections around the world to up my knowledge. But while I am fairly up to date with what is going on today, I need to get myself a proper history so i know the context of what I am seeing.
So if someone could provide me with a systematic syllabus of what I need to read, it would be appreciated. An actual syllabus from a top notch program would be the best.
A great book I read on the subject was "Shock of the New" by Robert Hughes.

The firm has open enrollment for the plan twice a year - Jan. 1 & July 1. They've asked me to start working in the middle of next month, which means I wouldn't be eligible to participate in the plan until Jan. 1, 2011 - just under 1.5 years away. Is it worth asking if they can grant me slightly early eligibility for the July 1, 2010 enrollment date?

However all the knobs have stopped working, I can't change the date/time, the pins keep breaking, and the cost to repair seems inordinately high, perhaps its time for a new watch. Can anyone have a look at that and pick something they think I might like?

Is there any kind of critical consensus about the claim made by Henry Binder and Hershel Parker in the 1980s that previous editions of Stephen Crane's
Red Badge of Courage were prepared with cuts demanded mostly by the original publisher and that the edition most people have read is thus much less darkly ironic than it should be, and that Binder's new presentation is a more accurate representation of Crane's original intent?

I'm in the market for a used car and I'd like one that won't disintegrate on me before I'm done paying for it. I have a total budget of $6k and want to buy from a dealer. What should I be looking for in terms of models, makes, and mileage? My top priorities are price, reliability, and MPG (in that order.) Assume I know nothing about cars. Because I don't.

Want to help remember a book title? 'Course ya do! It's from the 80s and, if I remember correctly, involves some kids that discover a new game at the local arcade. There's a pilot's helmet on top of the machine, and when they try it on and attempt the game they find they can travel through time. I believe the cover was a picture of the machine and the helmet. At one point they use it to break into a research facility or something, but before that I think they go back too far and it's still being built (leading to some fretting about jumping forward in time and ending up halfway through a wall or floor). I know somebody out there can field this one!

Has anyone ever queued for tickets? We're a little concerned as the Wimbledon web site mentions "overnight queuing" is allowed. Even though they sell 6,000 tickets on the day of the event, are we likely to leave disappointed if we go out the morning of the event?
We don't really care who we see playing or what court; its more the experience we're interested in.

Enough to counteract having to wear a dark suit under an August sun? I recognize that this question is kinda theoretical (and vaguely silly) but I was wondering if the more tech-minded of you all might be able to provide some idea how something like this might be possible. Thanks in advance!

I've been to a surgeon who wants to do an arthroscopy but he doesn't know what the problem is and hence doesn't know if it will do any good. Any other best practice tips for the upgrade itself? Thanks so much in advance.

Trying to remember a carbonated ginseng beverage sold between 1988 and 1994 at Whole Foods in Austin (and eventually sold at the incredibly fancy flagship HEB). I seem to recall that it came in a purple can and tasted vaguely like dirt. I haven't seen it since and it's driving me crazy that I can't remember what it was called. And no, it was not Ginseng Up.

I'm pretty into photography. I have a pretty giant SLR that I carry around with me everywhere, with an external flash and huge telephoto lens. But it's destroying my back, and I need a small point-and-shoot for off days.
I was hoping people could recommend new small digital cameras. I want a camera that has a really fast recording speed and takes relatively good pictures (with some amount of depth to them). I don't mind if it's a little more expensive, although I'd like something light weight and pocket size.
And underwater function would be cool, or at least water resistance.
Any ideas?

Is there any app that will automate a 'walkthrough' of Google Street View, based on a to/from set of directions in Google Maps? Example: Assuming Google has 'streetviewed' all the roads from point A in Berkeley to point B in SF, is there a program or site that would show me the street view of my route without my having to click through the route myself? I realize the time scale is a determinant factor: I would not want to sit through the 'drive' in real time, but hope I could selectively 'fast forward' in a way analogous to the zoom function of Google Earth.

I read a true crime book some years back, I don't remember anything about the book except one story.
My memory is hazy, but this is what I remember: some people were abducted in the USA. My memory tells me it was a mother and child/ren. I'm 99% certain it was an adult woman and at least one child even if they may not have been related.
Now the very creepy part. Photos of these people were found in a public bathroom sometime later. In the photos the woman was tied up, perhaps a child was also in the photo I'm not sure.
I'd like to verify if this story was indeed true or just made up by the author and I've tried googling many times without luck.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with

When I was young, I went to a Portuguese festival in New Jersey (USA), and played a curious game. In a fishbowl would be hundreds of pieces of tissue paper, rolled very thinly and bent. You would pay for 10 pieces, and then unroll them. If your piece had a mark, you would win a prize. I'm searching for what that game is called, does anyone know?

I've got a 1991 standard Hatchback, 169,000 miles. and i've done every single schedule maintenance. never had a problem with anything unexpected happening (which is why i do it). Now i'm wondering if there's a better (read: cheaper) way to do this, without sacrificing quality? I don't know any mechanics, don't want to it myself, but am curious if there's an alternative.

I was thinking that since I have a dedicated server in my home that hosting the files via private lan'd bit torrent would be the weapon of choice as the file transfer speed increases exponentially.
My server is running a version of ubuntu so whatever software I will need must run in ubuntu. The clients downloading the files will probably be running windows boxes so Utorrent can be used and would be preferred. Are there any specific things that I need to turn on in Utorrent to do this via lan or will it essentially be seamless as long as the tracker is my server?

This may be a longshot, even for the diverse crowd here at AskMeFi. My daughter's horse was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in January. We caught it very early and the horse has made a full recovery and is back to normal in every way. However, the annual renewal on our Life/Major Medical policy for the horse includes this clause.
An exclusion for any loss or expense due to Lyme disease or any underlying related condition will apply to all coverages.
Diagnosing Lyme is a bit of a judgment call as it is, and this seems like a huge get-out-of-ever-paying-any-claim-again loophole as pretty much anything that may ever affect the horse in the future could conceivably be blamed on Lyme Disease. The question for anybody that may have experience with this...is there any reason to maintain a policy with that loophole?
