Can I get my fiance in the US? I'm a Canadian grad student in the US on an F-1 visa. My fiance is a citizen of New Zealand. We're looking for a way to bring her here that will let her work (we're both far too poor to make things work with an F-2). Right now, her entering the Green Card lottery seems to be the best option, but is there anything we're not thinking of? [more inside]
My wife and I were watching the first episode of LeCarre's Smiley's People. Afterwards, we were talking about how the Cold War was such a big part of growing up, to the degree that my wife was taken back by the appearance of a *Russian* basketball player on a lunchbox promotion. Ok, so my question is, if the cold war was such a huge part of US history, why does it seem to have slipped so quickly from our national consciousness? [more inside]

My boyfriend has about 23 long boxes of comics (22 are full). He still gets a stack of comics every Wed. He won't stack the boxes over 2 high. Is there any thing that can be done to store these boxes so the room they are in doesn't look like a comic book shop? Our area floods, so the basement is out. Our house is a converted cape, so there is no attic. I don't want him to get rid of them, or stop buying them. I just would like to find a way to camouflage them. PLEASE.

I'm trying to remember a cheesy sci fi flick from...the 80's maybe. I can't remember much except there was something about a spaceship that crashlanded somewhere, and there was a "sci fi babe" on board...there was probably some sort of talking robot too. The most memorable thing about the movie was that the music was (stolen) from the movie Somewhere in Time was used...or at least something similar. Can anyone help me identify this movie?
When a building entrance has a set of double doors, why is one of the two door locked? I've seen this in many buildings. Is it for security? OK. So I have five movie clips on the stage named b1 - b5. When the user clicks on one the other four need to gotoAndPlay. I could write a function for one object then cut and paste and just change the names, but that seems inelegant. What I think I need to do is generate an array containing the five objects, then, when the user clicks on one of them, that one is removed from the array and triggers a function that loops through the remaining clips in the array and does the goto. Does that make sense? And if so, how would I do it? And if not, what is a better way? In other words, user clicks on movie named b1 and b2-b5 do something. user clicks on movie named b3 and b1,b2,b4, and b5 do something. Thanks! [more inside]

I have always been an a emotionally sensitive guy, and I guess being this way has its pros and cons. In my current and past relationships, my emotions really seem to get the best of me. When I am single, I usually have a firm grasp over my emotions, but when I am in a relationship, my emotions become heightened. I am usually very sensitive to the moods of my significant others, to the point that if they are in a bad mood, I also get in a bad mood. And a lot of times, I think I wrongfully attribute the reason for their bad moods to myself, and therefore get somewhat insecure. I don't think this is very healthy. My current girlfriend thinks its great that I am sensitive some of the time, but not great at other times. It drives me crazy when she says "I am too sensitive" when she may tease me about a topic that I am sensitive about, but she feels is funny or harmless. I don't like feeling like a wimp, but I also don't like feeling like my sensitivities are unwarranted. I guess I want to figure out how to be more disciplined with my emotions while at the same time not becoming a heartless boyfriend. Help me become emotionally mature and intelligent.

Should I get contact lenses? I've been wearing glasses for about 10 years, and mainly need them for driving. I don't need to wear them every day, but do if I have a pair of glasses I wear them. Currently I borrow my wife's spares but this has to stop because I have a poor track record with looking after spectacles, and I'm toying with the idea of getting contacts instead. In particular because I'd like not to have to bother with prescription sunglasses as well. Is it worth it? I had quite sensitive eyes as a kid, and do a lot of computer work. Does this affect my decision?

Let's assume (no soapbox rants, please!) global warming is a reality, the ice covering Greenland is melting, and the ocean's levels are rising. If I own a home and land which, according to this map, would be underwater, what--if anything--would the government do? I live near a major (federal) interstate, two major shipping ports, and a rail corridor linking the two. San Francisco and Oakland International Airports would also be underwater. What happens? Would they build a gigantic dike, like New Orleans and Holland? Is my home and the land on which it's built a total loss? If so, insurance-wise, is this considered an "Act of God"? If I was to put my home on the market tomorrow, must I declare global warming and the rising ocean levels as a possibility for flooding?

How can one tell the production history of a microwave oven? I bought a GE JES1656SJ at Best Buy today. Got it for a good price. Went home, Googled the model number. Very few hits. Nothing at epinions or consumerreview. Not sold at amazon. On the GE website itself, I found its page (with some effort). On this page it said "Sold Only at Lowe's" (the chain hardware/appliance stores). The fact that I bought this elsewhere notwithstanding, is there anyway to find out if this is an old/defective/dangerous/unpopular model? Is it unusual to produce specific models for certain outlets? The oven is still in the box pending the results of my investigation. Thanks.

I recall a strong element of family in it, but it's obviously not BTTF. I think it had two brothers (cousins? best friends?) heading back to the 1950s. I remember them in a nice old car with chrome and fins, but for all I know I may be making that up. It was as much drama as it was anything else. Sorry I don't have more to go on.

I'm working on a craft-type project that, when finished, will involve adhering large nylon panels to plastic or metal surfaces. I've done a few sample versions of this by covering cardstock in cloth tape, putting my image on the tape, and then using more of the matching cloth tape to adhere the panel to the surface. There has to be a better way to do this with the nylon, though - is there such a thing as large double-sided adhesive sheets that can turn a reasonably light piece of cloth/sythetic/paper into what's essentially a giant sticker?

The incidence of petty crime, particularly vandalism of flower planters (even in daylight), is up lately in our (small city) neighborhood. The ratio of absentee landlords to owner-occupied has been increasing over the years, and the quality of life in the neighborhood is slowly declining (e.g., more trash in the street, petty vandalism, graffiti, outright theft). Fundamentally, the solution is economic, and the city is slowly working on that. But in the short term, what are effective crime reduction methods that can be implemented at the neighborhood level (i.e., we can't direct the police to patrol more or install more street lights, but we could organize a "neighborhood watch")?

The UK based company I don't work for is not a fairly large online financial information provider. Understandably we receive no traffic at all from Google and other search engines for searches related to various company names. Recently I discovered that we catalogue all the search terms by which people reach our site and do a WHOIS search on their IP address using public WHOIS servers. We then search this information for things like "users from ms.com searching for takeover and at least one other word." Then we buy shares in whatever company people from ms.com are looking for along with takeovers. We have no relationship with any of the companies involved other than that we get to see their search terms. So far there is a definite correlation between these things, and we have made money. Could this qualify as insider trading? We are exploiting non publically available information that's for sure.

I teach a college course that requires my students to turn in video projects. Each project is, at the most, 500 MB. In the past, we've had the students burn their projects onto CDs and/or DVDs. We'd love, however, to come up with a way for them to submit them electronically. How could we pull this off? Would Google Video work? Would Streamload be reliable? YouTube? (FYI: there are 75 students and each of them turn in 7 projects through out the semester). Our budget is modest ($50/month at the most).

Due to circumstances, my department has inherited a 1U server that, after a firmware update, the fans are blowing much, much louder than they were originally. Normally, I would call/write to support or look it up on their site. Here's the M. Night Shyamalan twist: it is a server only sold and supported in Korea ("What a twist!"). I have been, for some time now, looking for a space for my retail store. I had to sign a contract with a broker, since in the area I was looking you can only have one broker working for you. I have seen a few spaces and have been in contract talks with one of them, but that fell through (not because of the broker). I also asked the broker about a SPECIFIC space, but they said everything was taken and nothing was available there. Later I called myself and found out more information, and soon contacted a landlord willing to lease me a space. I like my broker and think they tried their best, but I need to break the contract so I can go on and deal with this space myself. It is no problem to cancel the contract I just need to send a letter. I guess my question is, how can I let my broker go, without harboring or sending any bad feelings?

Please advise us on mobile phone calling plans in London. We'll be on sabbatical in London for 6.5 more months. We're in university housing and can only call on campus without using a calling card. We've gotten tired of dialing 30+ digits, so we'd use the mobile as our main phone, at least for outgoing calls. We'll be making a couple of calls a day in London, and two or three 10-20 minute calls to the US and France each week. I assume we want a 'pay as you go' plan, since we're only going to be here less than a year. We don't need a fancy phone. We'd probably prefer 2 cheap phones. Also, will our phones work in western Europe? Thanks for your advice.

To give me hope that achieving at this stage in life is possible I would like to hear of people who went on to make great achievements relatively late in their life (ie 30+) with not much happening before then. These can be anybody, famous or people you know, in any field, both creative and career wise. I haven't defined great achievement but I mean something rather outstanding (unusual I suppose) rather than 'passed my driving test' or 'got married'.

I am just starting the process of applying for a home loan. I've attended a first-time home buyer seminar in my city, read tons of books and have done my homework regarding mortgage options, home buying process, etc. I have an excellent credit score, and one debt (car payment), and make a decent salary. I've been advised to deal with a direct lender as I could get better rates, and fewer fees with them than through a mortgage broker. My problem is, I get virtually no response from the lenders. They take my information to start the pre-qual/pre-approval process, then nothing. They don't call back, and don't return my calls. This has happened 4 times in the last month. Has anyone else experience this? I live in Southern California (LA/Southbay area); do lenders here not need the business? I have never seen this issue addressed in home buying books or websites. Any insight, advice or recommenations?

I just had a long talk with my ex-boss, who's back as a consultant. She just told me that she let one of my coworkers stay with her after he got out of recovery, she was keeping it a secret (because it's weird, and because she was still his boss for half the time), she just kicked him out yesterday. I knew he was in recovery, but I didn't know the details (or which drugs). He is a long-term crack addict, went into rehab for a week, but is now back at work and back partying every night (she isn't sure if he's back on drugs, but I'd assume so). His work has been erratic for the year I've been there, and he's prone to aggressive, random, ten minute rants. He's late for everything, snappy, sleazy, and totally inappropriate in the office... Is there anyway I can get back the version that was stored on my local drive or am I, as I fear, screwed? Also, when I try to search my local drive for all the files with the same extensions (*.as) in hopes that I actually just saved it in the wrong place, Windows XP tells me I have no files with that extension, even though I can see that I do. Is it possible that my problems are bigger than my own incompetence?

Breast Feeding Filter: 32 years ago, (1974),when I was pregnant, I discovered, in the Whole Earth Catalog, a wonderful device called a 'breast cup' or 'milk cup'. I wore it on one side while nursing on the other, especially early on, - I caught the leaked milk, [more inside]

My understanding is that to sue in NYC Small Claims Court, the defendant must live, work, or conduct business within NYC. If the defendant does not live, work, or conduct business within NYC--though the claimant does--what's the proper court for a Small Claims Court type of lawsuit? And this might solve it, too: If the defendant bought something from a store in NYC, is that conducting business?

I am sure that we are way behind the times but, my wife just read about Iams and the alleged animal cruelty which they either actively participate in or overlook in their suppliers / labs. That, of course, prompted a couple of questions. 1) does anyone know the validity of the claims by PETA et. al.? 2) if they are valid claims, what options are out there for us pet owners who want to use healthy, not terribly expensive and readily available food (large dogs in this case)? I can't seem to find the article on the basis of these clues, though; does anyone remember this better than I do?

I was using GRUB to dual boot a linux partition and a winXP partition. I set this up ages ago and recently needed to remove the linux partition. I used Partition magic because I was feeling lazy. Now when I boot I get some grub error. I can boot using a morphix liveCD and selecting "boot from first partition" or whatever it actually says. WinXP doesn't have fdisk so I can't fdisk /MBR, and I'm not familiar enough with diskpart to want to mess around. Although I feel like an idiot for asking this question, what simple and probably obvious command will restore the MBR to it's pre-grub state? Thanks.

I have an old IBM PCjr 4860 that once upon a time we added a jrCaptain Tecmar extension piece onto it so we could attach a printer. I have three questions. I want to get rid of this beast but I want to print everything off the disks (I was quite the prolific writer as a kid). Unfortunately we lost the jrCaptain power transformer and cable (power supply) for this extension piece so we think that's why every time we turn on the printer it stops the computer from doing anything (no keyboard, no running of whatever it was running) and then upon turning off the printer it suddenly is back to normal. Where can I get my hands on that power supply or what could I use in it's place that wouldn't kill the extension. (voltage?) Second question: what about a way to transfer the big floppies onto a modern storage device? What are the options out there? Anything I can do at home? Any places that do this for you? Third question: what do I do with an old IBM PCjr when I want to toss it? [more inside]

We've been together for a little more than ten years. He's an all around nice level-headed guy and we share many interests. He's very handsome and I am attracted to him still. However, I've cheated on him a couple of times since we've been together. No sex. But recently, the invitation was offered...by me. The invitation was declined - good thing but of course I badly wanted it to happen as the chemistry was intense. It was purely lust in both incidences but neither led to sex. I am wondering why I got married in the first place. I do care for my husband very much and enjoy spending time with him. We go out together, we do day trips, etc. Sex is good but not great. I have tried communicating this with him many times but nothing really changes. Either way, I still love him immensely and love being with him so I'm not sure why I let myself do these things. Naturally, I don't trust myself... After the first time, I tried to work on my "hormones" by focusing only on him but now, I find myself back in the same spot. Should I let him go so he can find someone better (we're both in our mid-30s) or try to change...
