Last week I went to the emergency room with massive bladder/stomach pains. Six hours later after a bunch of x-rays and CT scans the doc said I had a kidney stone. He gave me a vicodin perscription and told me to pee in a strainer to catch it. When I left the hospital, the pain was gone. It's now nine days later and apart from occasional but more frequent urges to pee little amounts I have not experienced the hell like pain that i've read about here and else where around the web. Everyone Kidney Stone victim I've spoken describe constant pain from the beginning until the stone comes out. I assume my stone has passed my urethra and it's just swimming around inside my bladder. Is it normal for stones to hang in your body pain free for days? Is there any way I can force it out any sooner? I've been drinking plenty of water and all my pee has been pain and stone free. I'd rather suffer now than wait for it to strike randomly. I called my doctor but he's on the vacay. I'm freaking out, living in fear, clutcing my vicodin bottle, waiting for the apocolypse of doom to strike down on me at any moment.

I am looking for a work chair that I can take along with me on my business travels - something portable that would provide a level of comfort and functionality that was, at least, remotely similar to my Aeron at home. I know this is a VERY TALL order, so if there are any suggestions for chairs that would simply let me work comfortably in a hotel room - the crappy chairs in those are horrible - I'd appreciate that, as well.

I don't want to shell out the cash for Apple to throw an upgraded drive in ($250!!!!), but instead I want to buy a new hard drive off ebay or something and replace the 80GB one inside the fresh Macbook. Mind over matter: what strategies are good for psyching yourself up to do something scary, uncomfortable, difficult or painful? The moments I'm thinking of aren't interpersonal situations. More like: you're standing on the high dive. Or you're doing your own bikini wax, and it's time to rip it off. Or you're on a bridge about to bungee. You're at the top of the half-pipe, about to take off. You're about to get stuck with a needle for medical or decorative purposes. Surely "just do it" isn't the only strategy?

[NoveltySongFilter] I am compiling lists of the following: 1. Bad hiphop tracks from the soundtracks of films from the late 80s and early 90s that summarized the plot during the end credits. You remember...Organized Krime's joint from the end of TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze or Tag Team's reprise of their hit "Whoomp, There it is" for Addam's Family Values. 2. Hidden, unlisted and secret joke tracks from the end of albums. Off the top of my head I can only think of more dreck from the mid-90s like Korn's track with Cheech Marin from Follow the Leader or the Green Day track "All by Myself" from Dookie 3. Backwards masking. Kiss and the Beatles were accused of doing it so bands like Ministry thought it would be a good idea. Who else? 4. Funk or soul songs with theremin. Please add to my list. When I was a music student, we had a visit from a music psychologist who worked in a conservatory in London... I think it was The Royal Academy. During her lecture, she described an experiment where performers were asked to play either with no physical movement, or with obviously physically expressive movements. The performers who had no physical movement were divided into 2 groups; one group was asked to play in an emotionally expressive way, and the other group was asked to play mechanically. The result of this experiment was that non-musicians could not tell apart the 2 groups of motionless performers, they could only tell a performer was being expressive if they could see them moving. In short, non-musicians cannot tell if a musician is playing expressively by listening alone. Musicians could of course tell the difference between all of them. I'm now a music photographer, so these findings are of huge interest to me, especially when it comes to persuading musicians just how important it is to communicate on a visual level as well as a musical one. Does anyone have any idea where I can reference this study, or anything remotely similar? Thanks!

Culture shock, loneliness or a whole new adventure? I am considering a move from Central New Jersey to Thousand Oaks , California for a great job opportunity. I am a divorced 46 year old female. To make things even more confusing I knew someone who bought the same album and their copy had the correctly listed song. My question to you, is how on earth is this possible?

I know it's a long shot, but I'd like to find something that keeps her entertained, but doesn't drive me crazy. Some Japanese equivalent of Spongebob - a show I'd watch even if I didn't have children.
In this month's GQ, there's a longer update to the Milford High drug bust story, in which a 23-year-old private detective went undercover at a high school, leading to the eventual arrest of seventeen high school students. (The story inspired a decidedly banal MeFi thread.) My question--not covered in the previous thread, the news coverage, or the GQ article--is simple: how in the world is it legal for a private detective to buy drugs? And for the reported purchase of drugs to lead to an arrest? [more inside]

I am reading Douglas Coupland's new book (JPod) and I'm always a little frustrated by him. He seems to get the general vibe of nerds but is horribly off on details sometimes (in the first 50 pages, he makes reference to a "56k floppy disk"), which is agonizing. Anyway, he posits a math problem (I don't think this counts as a spoiler, I'll even omit the context and just pose the problem with page number, but if you really don't want to see anything about the book, don't read on, I guess.) Novels that keep you on the edge of your seat and refuse to let you sleep until you finish them. I have no clue what to get my boyfriend of four years, who is turning 26 in two weeks. I’d like to give him something fun, like an experience, but all of the “experience” websites cost way more than I’m looking to spend. Here’s the details: we live in the DC/Baltimore area and he’s into piano, karate, and listening to jazz/funk music. Looking to spend less than $100, as I already bought a ticket to fly home with him for his birthday so he can see his family. Also, it has to be a “family-safe” gift since he will probably open it in front of them.

I need your help. I'm a licensed acupuncturist and a herbalist. I have been involved in many out reach programs in the past. My goal was to reach out to as many immigrant groups with no to low health insurance coverage and educating them of available resources. The unique experience came working with the Korean community in New York City. This group tends to have such a high stomach cancer rate and about 70% of the patient population I came in contact with tested positive for H. pylori. The standard of treatment for H. pylori is course of antibiotic drugs. I don't know if you guys are aware but if you don't have health insurance to cover for these meds, it cost about $300 out of pocket expense. So, my thing is this - I wanted to set up a research program using simple herbs that are readily available and in low cost. I know nothing about setting up a research program. What do I need to do and who do I need to talk to? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello. Here’s the lowdown: I’m the senior sound designer / managing director for a leading international sound library company who’s been successfully running a company that doesn’t belong to me for 6 years. I’ve exhausted this opportunity, as the company is limited in its ability to grow due to the owners methods. In short, although I still have my job (and could have it forever, so to speak), I need to get out. I’m striving to create an opportunity for myself (and potentially for some of the other amazing employees I’ve hired who are looking for better opportunities) by starting a new company, and I must act now as I am not getting any younger.. I’ve been thinking this through for almost 6 months now, and something seeming great has just happened. Can you help me make the most out of it? [more inside]

How to Sync Palm Treo with Outlook 2007 I took the plunge, downloaded the Office 2007 (Beta), and started playing with it. One problem (so far), while you can keep old Office programs on your computer (in case the new ones don't work), the Outlook 2007 Beta required deletion of Outlook 2003. So, now my Treo won't sync anymore. Palmsource's Hotsync Manager 6.01 is not comaptible with Outlook 2007. I do not want to buy the Chapura program. Has anyone discovered a solution? What are the possible repercussions (legal or otherwise) of subletting my bedroom which has, in the past three months, been treated for a mild bedbug infestation? We discovered bedbugs in our apartment earlier this year. We treated the apt ourselves (very thoroughly, though) and I purchased a new bed. I have gotten a few bites over the past few weeks but am planning to have a professional extermination of my room before I leave. I have not said anything to the subletter. I am wondering what the subletter could do if, god forbid, he/she is bitten over the course of the summer. I feel I have dealt with this problem responsibly and thoroughly but I know there is no guarantee that he/she will be bite-free during his/her stay. Could I be sued? More generally, is it totally unethical of me to sublet given the situation - especially given the fact that I have not mentioned any of this to the subletter?

Okay, so I often use free wireless connections...whether they be in coffee shops or occasionally my neighbor's open network. My question is, how much of what I post online/what sites I visit can be seen? Sometimes I post things I don't want to share with my neighbors, also I check email. If other open wireless network users CAN see what I'm looking at, how do I prevent it? The network I use is belkin 54g. This shouldn't be a problem soon, as I am getting my own connection. When I had my own, I left it open so others could share. I assume my neighbor is doing the same thing? I would love to have a poster with an image of Beethoven, perhaps some notes or sheet music, and some of the text (the original German, not a translation) of the Choral movement of the 9th. Obviously, I want something very specific. I've looked at allposters.com and several other online poster sites and I haven't found quite what I'm looking for. Does such a thing exist? [more inside]

I have a question about bidding on eBay. Take a look at the bid history for this crazy auction to get a place on UK TV's Big Brother programme. Why are some bidders such as ceo_of_crazy_thursdays, puppy_sandwich and robthecricketer posting multiple bids in a row which often add thousands onto the price? Why not post just one big bid? Even stranger, why put up the price so much with sucessive bids before waiting to see who outbids you? The actions of these people appear to only serve to help the seller as it'll massivily boost the final price - so is this some sort of scam?

I've been applying to adopt a dog in Massachusetts for about a year. I live in a tenant-at-will apartment, so they won't give me one. My situation is such that I rent from a friend, his elderly aunt lives downstairs and I look after her, and she would love to have the companionship of a dog during the day when I'm at work. But it seems I can't have one, even though my landlady has given me the go ahead. She is deaf and partially blind, but able to play with a dog. I read the post about dogs being euthanized in Georgia (May 11, MeFi) Maybe these people should advertise in other states. I'd be happy to pay the transportation fee for a long-life friend. I don't want to buy one from a breeder, because that's a waste. I want a nice, friendly pooch, I don't care what it looks like, just that he's in my lap in the evenings when I'm watching TV, and an inspiration to get me up early in the mornings for the morning and evening pee, happily clutching my plastic bag to pick up the poo. Anyone in Massachusetts have any ideas?

Why are movies on airplanes so bad? I just sat through 12 hours of oxygen-deprived mediocrity (Cheaper by the Dozen 2, Rumor Has It, King Kong, The Transporter 2). I mean, it is just simple economics -- do the airline companies get a better deal on movies that suck? But then why does it cost no more to watch or rent a good movie than a bad one? If they're aiming for wide mainstream taste, couldn't they at least have things everyone wanted to see -- movies that have won awards, or genuinely done well at the box office?

Guarantee question. Bought a load of stuff from Mothercare in the UK. Arranged to have it delivered to home. Some of the stuff was not in stock, so it took them nearly 2 months to deliver it all. Now this is not a problem, baby's not due for another couple of weeks, my problem is they are stating that the guarantee for each of the items starts on the day of purchase and not on the actual day we took delivery from them. So in effect we've been stiffed of 2 months guarantee. Is this right?

Surprise! Paul Simon's newest album works on an external CD player but not on either of my Macs. I assume this is a DRM issue (my experience, backed up by one Amazon review). The iBook says it can't recognize the CD and spits it out; the PowerBook says nothing and spits it out. Any ideas here, beyond bittorrent, returning the disc or initiating the class-action lawsuit? The label is Warner. There is no mention of DRM/compatibility on the disc.
