I've just booked an international trip with a 3/4-day layover on the way home. Great, I think, I can spend some time in the city, get a cheap hotel, see a few friends for dinner and then get some sleep and a shower before my trip home - easy! I need an acoustic guitar to incorporate into an art installation. It'll be played roughly (by machines!), rest at an odd angle for years in conditions of unknown temperature and humidity, and be tuned only occasionally. What guitar should I get that won't crack, warp, or otherwise disintegrate under this treatment? Durability is more important than beauty or tone quality. I'm sure an electric guitar would be tougher, but I'd like to stay acoustic if possible. [more inside]

Just replaced a 50-year-old tar/gravel roof with white shingles. This is in Florida. But now the house is hothothot, heat keeps rising, air-conditioner runs constantly but can't keep up! It's just after noon and 84 degrees in here! The roof is low-hip, the attic is a crawl space insulated to about R-30, there's a turbine on the roof and three passive vents. Still hot! Depressing after writing such a big check. Capable roofer says previous thick layer of tar/gravel probably insulated a lot. But now what's my next step? 1. Would a white latex coating be more cost-effective than a solar-powered vent? 2. Any other suggestions? Whew, and thanks!

My sister told me that I need to renew my citizenship after I become 18. I was born in another country, but I have an American citizenship, my own SSN, since I was born. I don't have a green card. According to my sister, I have to go back to my birth country to renew my AMERICAN citizenship. Is it true? How is renewing my citizenship different than renewing my passport? I talked to my friends (who are over 18) and they said that they never had to renew their citizenship. What is the world is my sister talking about?

I want to be able to read Japanese. There, I said it. I know other people in the world have accomplished this feat, so it shouldn't seem so impossible. But as long as I've been at it, I feel that my progress is excruciatingly glacial, which makes me feel I must be doing it wrong. So I'm here to ask for help. I have seen the many previous questions about learning to read/speak Japanese. There are so many that I won't link to them here, though I have them open in 50 tabs as we speak, and I promise to go over them carefully once again -- but in the meantime: Is there a generally agreed upon BEST METHOD for learning to read Japanese? If time and money were not an object, what would get me where I want to be? Am I being unreasonable to expect a higher rate of forward progress? Am I just doing it wrong?? [more inside]

Emergency etiquette question: A family member is the father of the groom for a wedding this weekend. He and the groom's mother are divorced. He has behaved very well towards her, but she tries to get between him and his grown children. He was told today that she has arranged for a college friend of the groom to be the "emcee" for the rehearsal dinner tomorrow night. The invitations for this dinner were issued in both parents's names. The groom is oblivious to this issue and his father wants him to remain so. What should the father do? He was under the impression that HE was the host and would be acting as such but he has been essentially excluded from the planning process for this dinner. Any advice, experiences that are similar, clarification of the role of the father or of an "emcee" for a rehearsal dinner would be very helpful.

I am attending the wedding of dear friends at which I will have to see my ex-husband and his new partner—a one-time close friend of ours with whom he cheated while married to me. I am now very happily married to someone else, in a relationship far better in every way than my first marriage. Nevertheless, I absolutely dread seeing my ex-husband and my old friend, and the prospect of seeing them is something I’ve dreaded since I first learned of their, erm, relationship. At the same time, I’d REALLY like to be to defuse the emotional power this has over me, and simply enjoy the wedding and the get-together with many other old friends that comes with it. I love "discoveries" that add to seemingly-cold stories. Misfiled negatives unearthed, unlabeled photos finally identified, new connections made. Stuff like the identification of the first photo of Phineas Gage, or the recently-uncovered Lincoln inauguration photos, or to a much lesser extent (because it's "soft"), this TED talk about finding the face of Leonardo da Vinci. What other incidents/discoveries/ideas like this will enthrall me? And can you point me to a book (or at least a Wikipedia page) about it? [more inside]

Typically people build a desk that fits around a treadmill or buy something like the TrekDesk, but that is too big for my space (and won't work with my workplace-mandated cubicle components). I'm looking for a small walking treadmill with a detached console like the Trek for less than $840 + s/h. Are there any other detached console treadmills on the market that I haven't found or an easy way to convert a traditional treadmill into a detached console treadmill (without power tools)? Thanks!

A good friend of mine has recently become very interested with all things Everest. Several nights after having a couple of beers, he has asked our group of friends if they think it was possible for someone to have summited Everest before Sir Edmond Hillary, or attempted to summit before George Mallory. One half of the group is adamant that such a feat was impossible before 1921 due to a lack of proper equipment and a cultural reverence for the mountain. The other half believe that it was certainly possible because of the length of human occupation in the region, the adaptation of the Tibetan people to higher altitudes, and the innate ambition of man. Does anyone have scientific evidence for either side of the debate or an educated opinion?

There are companies that enjoy tax exemption as a 501c3 and yet actually make quite a substantial profit and operate chiefly according to a business/profit-making model. They don't seem to meet some of the key criteria of a non-profit. How do they do this and are there cases in which non-profits end up being forced to drop their non-profit status? If so, does this usually happen because of challenges from legislators, IRS, community members or who? If it helps, I'm thinking of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) which pulled 750million in profit last year and is involved in a public battle against Highmark BCBS over who enjoys the title of regional insurance monopolist. (Apparently they value profit over their professed healthcare mission.) Thanks for any information!

I was given a few sambo lemons from a friend that lives in FL & grew them. She didn't have a lot of suggestions on how to use them or know much about them. I tried Google & Wiki & here & found little to nothing. They are large for a lemon & quite green when ripe. On the inside they resemble many citrus fruits- looks like an orange or grapefruit, in sections. But they have little to no juice- very dry, which I'm guessing is a normal attribute. It must be a very primitive citrus fruit. I'd like more info about this plant/ fruit & ideas on how to use them.

How do I win friends and influence people when I don't know what they look like? My new job requires me to manage client projects remotely. Most of my time with clients is spent either in conference calls, one-on-one phone calls, or communicating through email and Basecamp. I usually have no idea what these people look like. As a project manager I need to keep the client moving towards the finish line by making decisions quickly and getting things done on time. My question is two fold: 1) How do I motivate and influence a team that works for another organization?, and 2) How do I best do this being remote? I am looking for techniques and tools that will help me be an effective, remote, 3rd party project manager. If it matters I work for a Software as a Service company. My clients are implementing our software on their websites. The client may or may not have a dedicated project manager. Help me drive things forward!

I am looking for advice on a specific situation, but general comments are welcomed too. The situation is as follows: I went out with a guy (I'm a girl) a couple of days ago and it went really really well. I am fairly sure it was a date, because he bought drinks, put his hand on my waist, and we sort of kissed a little bit but not really. We went out again tonight, and we had a good time. But at the end, he hugged me like he would a bro. We also each paid for our own meal, which I had planned on doing anyway, but my friends always tell me that's one of the ways to tell if it was a date or just hanging out. I am really confused about what just happened. Anyone has ideas? [more inside]

Can you help me find this video/clip? I watched it at the office maybe 3 weeks ago and didn't bookmark it. It was actually a clip from a TV show (I think) and several of the commenters commented on the fact they rarely watch the show, but always love the clips of the skits on the web. This particular skit was about "Gadget Overload" (my words) where everything was going off at once. You can imagine: They were updating Facebook while an iPhone message was coming in and the Twitter write box was flashing. I can't even remember if it was animated or live-action(!) But it encapsulated the iBarrage beautifully. As always, thanks in advance!

I'm planning a holiday in Scotland this August with a friend. We'd like to incorporate a few days (anything up to a week) of walking. Ideally, we'd like to go on a guided walk organised by a tour company - the kind where you stay in B&Bs/guest houses each night and the tour company organises transportation of your luggage during the day. The level of walking should be of the easy-to-moderate rather than super-challenging: the goal is to appreciate the beautiful Scottish landscape rather than undertake a strenuous physical challenge. I've googled tour companies that offer this kind of thing, but I was wondering if any mefites have specific recommendations for UK-based tour companies offering this kind of holiday? Or any particular advice?

The denouement of the story is the leader telling the last generation of people there that the children are ready to leave .... and that is all I can remember. Yesterday, my firefox install on ubuntu started misbehaving. The bookmarks toolbar only shows up if I remove it and and add it again. There are no URLs in Address bar and no URL display down where the status bar used to be. Several plugins have stopped working without being disabled. Sometimes tabs can't be closed. No session management and on and on. The problem seems to be some interaction of a ubuntu update and firefox not cooperating. After googling I have nothing and am at a complete loss for how to fix it. Where do people turn for support for ubuntu firefox problems that don't require them to be on either development team? Matlab textparsing filter: So for a project, I am working with over one hundred years of hourly data collected for water levels. I have all of this collected in a giant, ~35 Mb text file. Toward the last decade or so, there are double entries for water level thanks to semidiurnal tide measurement upgrades, and so there is an irregular number of columns that isn't easy to work with the usual data import strategies. I need your help, citizens of Metafilter, so that I can successfully rig the Matlab textscan command (or something else) to read in this formatted data, and make accommodations for empty value strings! Proust's In Search of Lost Time and Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom seem to me to share deep artistic affinities: heavy reliance on often hallucinogenically long sentences, innovative and almost esoteric metaphor, and an almost mythical mode of storytelling. They both violate the show-not-tell rule like crazy as they give off reams of psychological and sociological opinion. What else is in this literary vein?

I'd like to get into recording. I've played with Ardour, but it's way over my head. I've played with Hydrogen for drum sounds, and it was way too complicated for me. Ideally, I want to record directly (I'm in an apartment), perhaps using something like a Line 6 Pod. A four-track feels more manageable to me than a computer and software. Is that crazy? If it's not, I'd love to hear about some cheap digital four-track recommendations. Also, I'd love to hear about some decent, inexpensive drum machines that'll let me easily create simple rock beats. And again, I'm open to the idea that this is better with a computer.

When I was about 15, I remember coming across a book in a now defunct Borders that was pretty interesting. The whole premise was that it featured stories about Hollywood stars and their various sexual liaisons, their sexual quirks, and even the ages at which they lost their virginity. For example, In one of the pages on the actor Dustin Hoffman it recounted the story of the actor tricking his brother's girlfriend into having sex with him and thereby relieving him of his virginity. In another article on Clark Gable, it was revealed that he suffered from smegma and that his wife once quipped that an "inch less and he'd be the queen of Hollywood." Anyway, does anybody where I can find this book. The only title I seem to remember for it--and I am not sure if it's even correct or not--was something like "Did He or Didn't He: Stories of Hollywood's Most Notorious Sex Secrets"

My dog is about 7 years old, she is a Australian mini. Whenever I go away after work for more then a few hours she cries, mopes and whines. She has this annoying habit of whistling through her nose. I live with my family and commute to work with my Dad & to school, so most days we're leaving at 8am and back 6pm--she does fine then but then if I'm gone & my Dad is home is when she is really fussy. I typically spend the weekend with my Fiancé, which really bugs her (I can't take her with us as my Fiancé lives in a Resident Hall). If I go out of town, or away for the night she is still really needy and fussy. How can I get her to be less annoying for my family, to be less fussy about me being gone? I take her for walks and love on her when I am home but that's not enough. Any suggestions or ideas would be most helpful.
