I've order a bunch of computer parts from Newegg and am going to build my own computer, hopefully not wrecking anything in the process. (I even picked up an antistatic cuff and mat today, to be safe) Thing is, I'm thinking of adding an 100-120gb SSD to the parts list to go along with the 1TB spinning hard drive. How do I set up having two hard drives like this, with the OS and other often-used essential programs on the SSD and everything else on the "slow" drive? I'm new at all of this--I don't think I've ever even looked at a BIOS before, let alone assembled a system. [more inside]

I'm looking for a book that was out around 1997 (the last time I remember physically seeing it) that detailed lots of different mechanical machines Chris Ware had designed/made, many of them coin-operated. I really should've just coughed up and bought it right then, because I've never laid eyes on it since, and no bookshop staff have been able to identify it. Do you know what book this is, or what it's part of, and if by chance it's still in print? [more inside]

I need to take Human Anatomy and Physiology as pre-req's for Occupational Therapy school. Those courses require that you have taken Bio 101 with a Lab, which I did not take in college (graduated in 2006). My questions are: how lost will I be if I do not take Bio 101 first (college classes sure are expensive!), and is this something that the community college where I want to take Anatomy will even check? poll: should I drink coffee? After 10 years of being a caffeine addict (started when I was 16!), I quitted in January, cold turkey. No coffee, no diet cokes, no energy drinks. It sucked, a lot, for about two weeks. All I get now is an occasional cup of white or green tea, that's it. This week has been unusually exhausting, and the next three days are probably going to be the most testing of my life. I am really tempted to drink coffee, but will it actually help? Will it just fxxx me up? Will I become addicted again?

Lost a ton of weight, clothes don't fit anymore. Should I learn to do my own alterations or buy new clothes?
I've lost a lot of weight in the past year and have gone from a size 14 to a size 8. After a few years of thinking it was just a metabolism/getting older thing, my doctor recently discovered my weight gain was caused by the beginning stages of hypothyroidism. (I ballooned 47 lbs. in a year and half.) After I started taking medication (and increasing my workouts,) the weight started dropping off. I was a size 4 before all the gain, so it's possible I might lose more. I have a lot of nice clothes that don't fit me anymore. Some pieces are really nice designer items and I'd like to keep them and protect my investment in them. Alterations are expensive, and buying new clothes isn't cheap, either. Is it worth it to learn how to sew and do my own alterations? Before I invest in a sewing machine and some classes, I want to know if this plan is doable. I know nothing about sewing, so is taking in clothes something that's complex and should be left to the professionals?

What can I use to coordinate multiple webcams and do security-DVR-type stuff with them?

I feel like I'm losing my mind from grief due to a broken heart. The people I have tried to trust since my break-up have let me down (except for my one true friend and my therapist but they can only help so much and they are kind of like Saints). I'm scared of my paranoia (big business is corrupt and it rules our country without scruples -- today I decided Verilli must have been drugged by the GOP to have so royally flubbed the Health Care oral arguments which may not be insane but if it's true it makes me want to die). What can I do for myself in NYC to not lose my mind and keep growing as a person? [more inside]
There is an office collection for the Mega Millions lottery going on. My office has about 60 employees. Almost everybody has put money in the pot. The general consensus is that today would be the last day of work for any participants if we win. So, if we win, come Monday, our office would be vacant and the business (small-to-medium sized law firm) may need to shut down. Do you know of any accounts of something like that happening? Where the employees of a small business jointly won a large jackpot and quit en masse?

I'm interested in particular in sharp transitions, rather than, say, slowly climbing from the mail room to the board room over the course of a lifetime.

Please suggest a thin/light laptop with great build quality and battery life for approximately $1000. An Ultrabook would have been ideal but I need at least 500gb hard drive and all the standard ports (more USBs, HDMI, Ethernet etc.) I don't need an optical drive. Also, I don't want a Mac. I would be using it mostly for watching movies, college work, surfing the web etc. but no gaming. Given these conditions which would be the best laptop I can buy immediately?

I have a SanDisk Cruzer 32 GB USB flash drive that is holding my data hostage. I got one of those "there might be errors, want me to check and fix them?" messages and said yes, which the PC did without problems. Now, although the computer recognizes that it is in the port and assigns it a drive letter, it cannot read any files, asks my to reformat, and shows as either full or empty. [more inside]

Trying to remember the name of a TV series program that I watched in the late 1980s that in one episode on digital information predicted the rise of the electronic book. There was a male host who led the show, which was an examination of new technologies. In the particular episode I am looking for, he recounted an idea that books in the future would be distributed from something like an ATM machine where you would insert a card onto which the book would be downloaded. If it helps, I remember he stood at some kind of podium during the broadcasts that had like an acrylic/lucite egg-shaped glowing top--random detail, but these are often what jog people's memory.

I like to listen to a wide variety of music: classical, rock, jazz, instrumental metal, folk, video game, rap — whatever catches my ear. I also like listening to podcasts. Unfortunately, most of the music podcasts I've seen only cover music in a single genre, often with an emphasis on newer music. I'd like to find a podcast that a) spans genres and eras in a single show, and b) isn't afraid to play popular music. Does such a podcast exist? Super bonus points if there's some commentary about history and context, so that I can learn something while I listen. [more inside]

My wife has this leather painting/art kind of thing which was made by taking a hide of leather and cutting out patterns in it. I think it was then painted a bit. It was made in Thailand originally. The problem is that it got stored somewhere damp and the bottom bit has shrunk, so now it is not rectangular but more rhombussy shaped. (Not a lot, but noticeably). Is this repairable? I mean, leather stretches right? If so, where would you go to get it fixed? I don't even know what sort of craftsman to ask.

I saw some Brooklyn high schoolers outside playing a game that could be described as turn-based freeze tag (and poses that came out of tai chi postures). As the initial setup they stood in a ring of around 8-10, frozen in a pose. At certain points one person would make a wild move (mainly using arms, hands extended flat, sometimes pivoting) and attempt to tag the person next to them out of the ring. They would return to frozen after that, but there may have been a countermove made as well. Eventually there were two people and a winner was found. Any idea what they were playing?

Hi everyone, I live in Seattle (Queen Anne to be specific), and I was wondering: (1) Whether or not a Vespa would be a great investment, better than a car, taking into account the layout of Seattle, for getting around the city, no major trips, and about as frequent as every weekend, maybe twice a week (2) Coming from NYC and not knowing how to drive, what is the best approach to learning how to drive a Vespa? Is any sort of license required, and where would I go to obtain that license? How long would it take, if I devoted time to learning regularly? Are there any issues specific to Seattle that I should take into account in taking up this project of learning how to ride and purchasing a Vespa? Any general commentary about motorized scooters is also greatly appreciated.

Is it worth applying to a job that has a start date earlier than my arrival "just in case"? [more inside]

So I've used Python here and there to solve system administration tasks and create some small web applications (again to solve any issue related to work). Living in the sys admin world, I typically turn to Bash. Bash because I know it well and I can throw out a solution quickly. Problem is I'm starting to interview more and more for "DevOps" positions, what's the best and fastest way to bring my Python (or insert language) abilities up a notch? I admit that I typically write in Python with one screen trained on the library docs. I've got a solid understanding of data and control structures. I thought maybe coming up with a weekend project might help but I'd like to hear other people's thoughts. Reading good code always helps, but doing is always better for me. I guess the real question is creating something that does x always makes you understand a language at a deeper level (if such thing exists).

Crazy, weird phenomenon: since I was a little kid (I'm now almost 52) I have occasionally experienced an extremely sudden, acute sort of spasm--more like a very acute, kind of painful itch--simultaneously in the tip of my big toe and on the skin of my lower abdomen. It will last fractions of a second, but usually reoccur up to 5 or 7 times maybe within the next few minutes. Then nothing for maybe a couple of months. The feeling is definitely located on my skin, not deeper, like a muscular thing. It's very pin-pointed and specifically located. It's quite uncomfortable, almost painful, though very, very quick. It's sudden and acute enough to make me gasp and grab my stomach and my toe in reaction. Obviously this is not a big problem. I'm writing because it's so very strange, and I have never known anyone else to experience this. In fact, if I'm ever bold enough to ask someone, they just laugh in disbelief: "your toe AND your stomach!?!" I know! I mean, how on earth are the big toe and the skin of the abdomen related? So, the question is: anyone else ever experience this weirdness?

Were doing an addition to our house, mainly a new kitchen. But included in our wish list is a set of french doors and we must move the washer and dryer to a new location outside the main house. I had a highly recommend contractor come over to take a look. After going over our "wish list" he said the way to proceed is to make a "as built" set of drawings of the property with set-backs, electrical, etc. He does the drawings work himself and charges $50 an hour. Says the entire preliminary drawing could cost up to approx. $5000. My head hurt for awhile and I am just not clear on the best way to proceed. I know we cannot afford all the work we want to get done. I know we are willing to work with cabinetry from places such as IKEA or Home Depot, if that really makes a difference. I know I want to have everything up to code and work with permits on the job. I know my head hurts. I started my own overview house plan using Google SketchUp and the help of this very forum, but it is very preliminary and I am not sure if I am up to making it a complete drawing with gas, elec, plumb, etc that would be necessary for the final job drawings. What I am asking for is help on how to wrap my head around this project. Am I being naive to think that this can all be done without spending 5K on drawings alone? What else am I missing here?? Thanks, Henry

Why does the Netflix Watch Instantly homepage hate me? It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to ∞ minutes to load all the images. I can't say it's completely useless without the images—if I'm desperate, I can mouse over every black rectangle to see what it contains—but I'm sure the irritation is shortening my life. While it's loading, I typically see a message that Firefox is waiting on data from one of (what appear to be) Netflix's servers. I tried flushing my DNS cache, and that actually seemed to help momentarily, but then it stopped helping. (Yeah, I don't think it really helped.) Is this just Comcast throttling Netflix so I'll use Comcast's video service? Is there anything I can do to speed things up? I started the dreaded customer service phone call last night and that actually seemed to precipitate an avalanche of image loading—did they see my customer service ID and say hey, dump that guy's images so he'll hang up?

I currently live in a shady neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. I call the police at least once a week. I also have a 50 mile commute through the city. We want to move closer to my work sooner rather than later. After almost 2 years of unemployment that wiped us out financially, we're back on our feet, but savings is in rough shape. I have a 401k from my previous employer with about 30K in it, and I'm wondering if there is any sensible way to use the money in the 401k as a down payment so that we can buy, rather than rent. Making payments won't be a problem, just the down payment. We intend to stay in the new place for many years, and I really, really hate moving, so I'd rather not move this year into a rental, and then do it again in a year or two.

I'm looking for a book or story I read about a Jewish baby who is thrown from a crowded train on its way to a concentration camp during the Holocaust. I figure I keep a bag of rice with some peanut butter and oats on me for food. I'm thinking a tent for a place to sleep and panhandling if I wind up screwing this up too bad. I would day labor no problem if it comes down to it, wondering if anyone has any experience with this? I keep trying to find travel companions, but everyone keeps falling through. [more inside]

I saw a nutritionist and she recommended for lunch and dinner I make sure that 50% of my meal be vegetables, 25% lean protein, and 25% a starch of whole grains with only a minimal amount of dressing or oil for cooking. Beans are great, but count as a starch and a protein. The vegetables can really be any vegetable except potatoes (too starchy). So far I've been (1) eating salads with chicken or pork and (2) vegetable fajitas with whole wheat tortillas and beans (maybe too starchy because it counts as two starches, but I like it). Any other ideas for these eating parameters? I need suggestions for things that I can cook at home very quickly (preparation and cooling 20 minutes or less really don't have a lot of time) and things that I can order in restaurants. Thanks!!!!

I've had a pre-order with a major UK online retailer for a limited run collectable ornament for a couple of months now, but the 'Due for release' date has been pushed back three times now, allegedly down to manufacturer delivery issues. That wouldn't normally be a problem... but the same online retailer has exactly the same item (and it's only made by one manufacturer) listed again elsewhere as 'In Stock' - but at more than a 50% markup (£130 as opposed to the pre-order price of £80). Are they doing anything legally wrong here (in UK law), as opposed to just deeply immoral?

Graphic Designer who wants to start her own screen printed shirt line (i know... I know). But doesn't want to get them printed on ugly looking shirts.
I want to start my own T-shirt company (i know I know. Don't roll your eyes). I am a graphic designer and would like to create shirts that are stylish. Basic screen printed shirts with sayings etc. While I know how to screen print I think my best bet is designing and then getting them printed through, well, an online shirt printing company. The trouble is most of them are very limited and have just the tacky crew neck shirt kind of thing. I don't want to do cafe press or zazzle style printing. So, What's a good company to go with? any suggestions? For example take a look at JacVanek.com Not crazy about her designs but her shirts are what I'm looking to print on. That urban outfitters style! Thanks!
