Model ship kit building help. My first kit, an 1819 Virginia Schooner by Artesania Latina, is great fun to work on, but the (lack of) directions is frustrating and may be leading me to make crucial mistakes. Googling takes me to the same few sites which do offer some help but not enough. Specifically, I am planking the hull (second layer) and also fear that I’ve botched the stern configuration. Have 2 books. Both gloss over details of construction. I welcome specific suggestions on planking the hull, where to find pictures of the stern, books to get, any and all help appreciated.

Someone ordered me a nice selection of Spanish cheeses for my birthday. It was shipped on Monday, according to the packing slip. It reached my office during business hours on Tuesday, but I was out that day and yesterday. The box sat there until today, when I brought it home. I opened it just now, and found 4 vacuum-packed cheeses in a little styrofoam cooler with a cold-pak -- but everything was at room temperature. The box was labeled PERISHABLE. The cheeses themselves are labeled KEEP REFRIGERATED. I've got the cheeses in the fridge now. Do you think they're still safe to eat?

I'm a woman in a longterm committed relationship, and I love sex. Over the years, I've started to feel that I don't get anything out of giving my partner blowjobs, and the unfairness bothers me. Yet not being excited by giving it or wanting to give one also makes me feel guilty, like I'm not being a good partner or being the stereotypical woman who hates blowjobs, which frustrates me. So, Facebook won't let me invite all my friends at once to an event I created. Instead, I have to manually click on all my friends, one at a time, to invite them. I used to use this very useful code as a workaround. But about 2 weeks ago, Facebook changed it all again, so the code doesn't work anymore. Does anyone have a new workaround? Or, can codemonkeys take a look at the code to see if there's any minor tweaks that can be made to make it work again? Thanks in advance. [more inside]

I remember a supposedly true story about someone moderately famous that went something like this: One day, on a whim, he sent a one-word telegram "Congratulations!" to four or five of his friends, chosen randomly. Of them, only one replied asking why he had sent it; the remaining friends had all accomplished something moderately significant in their lives recently and assumed that was what it was about. Do I have this story right? Who was it about? Is it apocryphal?

Once in a while, I'll meet a guy and shake his hand, but it's... different. They try to lace their little finger inside my little finger (or possibly little finger and ring finger inside my little finger and ring finger, not sure). I don't let them, and just give them a "normal" handshake, which they quickly adapt to -- but it's clear that they were going for the "special" handshake. This happened again earlier this week, in a business environment, and has happened on 5 or 6 other occasions in my adult life, usually in a semi-business environment. FWIW, every single time, it's been a white male doing the weird hand shake. So WTF is this? Freemason handshake? Shriner's handshake? KKK handshake? Gay handshake? AC-DC handshake? Cthulhu handshake? What??? (Next time, I'm just going to ask, but it would have been very awkward and unprofessional this last time.)

Looking for a specific comic strip from an unknown (to me) source. The upshot is a woman calls her boyfriend/husband about her car not starting. Next panel is her fantasizing about him coming home and taking care of her during her troubles. Last panel shows him telling her tow truck is on the way, cab is on the way so she can get to work, and he has to rush to meeting. I think I first saw this linked from Reddit and vaguely recall someone mentioning it may be used in one of those relationship books (Men are from Mars type).

Postscript to a relationship? Is it a good idea? Can it be done constructively? Or is it purely self-serving?
My relationship has ended and through this process I've realized certain things. I want to share my clarity with my ex. I'm sure there are selfish reasons I have this impulse, but I also am a bit concerned that he may truly not be conscious of, what I consider to be, serious anger issues- which I hesitate to call verbal abuse, although that is most likely accurate. I never named things this way while in our relationship- we would argue around in a maze of clever denials and emotional outbursts- which I never found my way out of. . . So, am I tricking myself by thinking that this is something he needs to be confronted with for his emotional health? Or is there potentially some positive way to convey this harsh reality to someone who, so far, has not been able to acknowledge the severity of their behavior?

I can't for the life of me remember the name of a particular megamix/mashup album/artist. I remember that the first track sounded like it started with the helicopter sound from the beginning of one of the 'Another Brick..' tracks from Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', then it either sampled 'Little Fluffy Clouds' or used sampled the same interview. Closer to the end of the album 'Your Song' was mixed in. Any ideas? I believe the artist also had an album featuring mostly Flaming Lips mixes. Both were available free on his website.

By default, I was going to get TimeWarner cable for internet, as TimeWarner is what I've used in the past and my new apartment (which is in NYC) will be cable-ready. But I see that Clear has a plan that gives you 4G wireless access at home + 3G access anywhere else (their "4G/3G" plan). This sounds very appealing, but I'm concerned I might be too much of a power user for it. If you've used Clear 4G, did you have problems with low speed or restricted data usage? [more inside]

I remember an animated movie that showed on TV at least a couple times during the 70s. The only thing I remember is at the end, this blond boy has to pass some sort of test where he has to move between some small above ground pools/big cauldrons of water. At one point one of the vats freezes, and he becomes trapped underneath the ice. A deer like creature (of mystical significance who is somehow favoring him) breathes on and/or paws at the ice. It melts and he's freed and transformed into a bigger/older/princelier(?) boy. What the did I see and is it based on some fable/myth/story?

It seems like the turnaround time is way better than with rabbit or goat serum antibodies, and plus chickens are pretty easy to take care of. I imagine purifying yolk would be easier than serum, too. So I have been having this certain situation on and off for 8 years now. But lately, started last year, it looks like there's additional other discomfort added in my body. I am talking about my throat. I have this discomfort wherein I always feel the need to remove something from my throat, like phlegm or something. It's not actually painful, it's just annoying. And when I do so, sometimes there's some phlegm that comes out and sometimes, none at all. The phlegm that's coming out is also thicker and stickier than the normal ones we have when we are coughing or something. Right now, my neck is itchy also (as well as below my eyes) and like I said, it's uncomfortable because I feel as if there's something in my throat. [more inside]

Price to performance ratio is extremely important to me though, I want something I'll be happy with and that will last, but I'm not willing to spend $100s more for minor gains. I don't have a strict budget but the cheaper the better (for a good product). [more inside]

I want to make sculpture with repurposed sheet steel, say 10 to 20 gauge. Probably from old cars, which is on the thin end of that spectrum, but I'd like a little leeway. Tired of waiting for my friend's friend to loan me a plasma cutter, so I'm (gulp) shopping. Do I need the $1400 Powermax 30 or will I be satisfied with the RAMSOND CUT50DY on sale for $500? The guy at the shop I called recommended the $1400 Miller Spectrum 375 X-Treme, which is about when I realized I'm in over my head. What about the $800 Hobart Airforce 500534 250ci, which, unlike the others, includes a built in air compressor? I'm not rich, and this is not for heavy industrial use, but I'd very much like something that works and works well on 120v current. I may well be using this on the sidewalk in front of my apartment, so I'd like it to be relatively portable. Also I'd rather it didn't kill me or anyone else. Merci bien!

Owing to a stinko job market (until recently), and a five-month stint caregiving my dad, I haven't been an aggressive job searcher till recently. I'd greatly appreciate any comments, anecdotes or any other oddments you have about these and other IT-related certifications, to help me determine which (or whether any) are woth the powder to blow them to hell with. When a Freemason is given "light" by the Worshipful master during his initiation, how does that not conflict with a Christian's belief that Jesus has already brought him into the light from darkness (through salvation)? I know the physical meaning is removing the blindfold and literally giving him light, but the symbolic meaning implies the brother was in darkness and is now in light. In a broader sense, how have other Christians handled the perceived conflicts between the rituals in Masonry and Christianity? Please keep your reply above the very basics of "Masonry is not a religion." I'm pretty familiar with all those statements (I'm an EA preparing for FC). Mainly looking for guidance from other Masonic Christians about the perceived conflicts between Christianity and masonry.

Shipping clothes from Canada to USA: what does the Certificate of Disinfection entail, where do I get it?
I have 2 large boxes of used clothing/shoes to ship to the US soon, and the post office employee told me the volume of items would definitely not pass the border unless I have a Certificate of Disinfection. Unfortunately, this document seems non-existent. There is NO information in Google, answers are always something along the lines of, "Ship it in several smaller boxes!" or "Don't say it's clothing!" which are avoiding the point: I am trying to do this by the book (legally). I had a 13 year old standard poodle that unfortunately developed lymphoma. For those 13 years, we were as close as a dog and owner could get. When she no longer could stand, the decision was made to put her to sleep. On her last day, I went to pick her up to carry her to the vet's appointment. I was utterly surprised ( and disappointed) that she viciously bit my thumb and would not let go. Why would such a gentle 13 year old LOYAL dog do that at the end?

Hey, for the third time in the last ten years or so the same part of my upper back has decided to cause me a spectacular amount of pain and discomfort for the last five days or so. The pain is all on the right side of my upper back, going up my neck to the base of my skull, accompanied with numbness in my shoulder and all down my right tricep, sometimes all the way down to my fingers. Along with the pain I'm nauseous half the time, possibly as a result of the pain itself. Sleeping, working and doing anything at all beyond moaning is really difficult, and the application of heat and cold has only helped temporarily. Last time I just took over-the-counter back meds for a week until I could get off the couch, and then a bit later went to a chiropractor who identified a problem in my upper spine and assured me he could fix it if I came around every week for the next 20 years and signed over my paycheque. This time I'm going to go to a proper doctor, but can anyone take a guess at what may be wrong and what sort of doctor I should try to see? Thanks!

Could you help my friend find a poem to comfort the family of a friend who has just died? The young man had gone through some bumps in his life and was just starting to turn it around, and then, tragically, he died an accidental death. She’s looking for something fairly short (under 10 lines), modern, nothing too literary, and something that celebrates the immortality of family love. I’ve looked on previous Ask MeFi posts, but most of the poems I see there are unsuitable for various reasons. She doesn’t want anything tailored to a funeral; she would like to send this poem directly to the family for them to reread in the coming months (perhaps put on a fridge to turn to for comfort).

It seems that the things I used to request from traveling friends (Petit Bateu shirts from Paris, weird candy from Japan, Elnett hairspray from Europe in general, etc.) are now just as easy to get in the U.S. as they are elsewhere, thanks to the internet/globalization/changing FDA regulations. But surely there must still be amazing things out there that are impossible to find stateside (or in the case of cosmetics, not FDA approved). What are they?

But since the installation, it "chirps" every 30 seconds or so, presumably when the signal from the meter is broadcast. What can I do to stop this or shield my speaker? [more inside]
Help me identify mystery photographer! This image (a little NSFW) came up today on How To Be A Retronaut. I plugged it into TinEye and it found more examples but none of them have details about the photographer. I found this other image (a bit more NSFW) which may be by the same photographer and has a more complete 'signature' in the lower right. The signature looks like it might be a French name. Any clues?

This is my boyfriend's question, but I figured I'd ask it here. Thanks! The other day my right ear was bugging me (felt a bit plugged up), so I tried cleaning it out by spraying a mixture of warm water and vinegar deep into it as my ENT instructed a few years ago when I had a case of swimmer's ear. Unfortunately, some of the water didn't come out (I think) and now my inner ear hurts and my hearing has been significantly reduced and muffled. [more inside]

I bought a Mini Cooper S in 2003. I loved the car and drove it a moderate amount until Christmas 2009, when I had to leave it at my father's house in Ohio and fly back to Chicago for work. I ended up leaving it there, and moving to New York City, where I'm clearly not going to be needing it for a while. So I need to sell the car. It's in pretty good shape, with remarkably low mileage (about 50,000 miles). Unfortunately, by now the battery is completely dead. I have no idea how to go about getting it fixed, or appraising it, or listing it for sale. What's the best way of getting it listed and sold?

So I think I'm getting ripped off. Or, at the very least, the victim of an international company's careless mistake. I purchased $192 worth of camera film (Polaroid) over a year ago in October 2009 from an Austrian photography company. Apparently, I was never charged for it and a representative claiming to be from the company emailed me last month (around mid Feb.) informing me of this open payment and that I need to pay this amount. I have no recollection of this order, seeing as I'm a fairly routine customer and this was placed over a year ago. I ignored the first email back in February and they've now sent me another email requesting the $192 payment or threatening to take this to a debt collection agency. I don't think I even have $192 to my name - what should I do??

I am currently a student in a graduate program. A very close friend, who is in the same program, has begun sending me essays for school and correspondence related to her job search to proofread. In doing so, I have noticed a pattern: her writing is full of truly awful, egregious run-on sentences. Nearly every sentence is a run-on. My friend is very smart and accomplished, and I'm not quite sure how she's come this far without this issue being brought to her attention. She has been experiencing disappointment in her grades and career search, and I suspect that this problem may be contributing to the situation. (We are in a highly competitive and nitpicky field.) I think that as a friend, I have a responsibility to bring this to her attention, but I have no idea how in the world to do so in a way that's sensitive and doesn't make her feel bad or damage the friendship. Do I need to tell my friend? If yes, how do I bring it up?

I wrote for my school paper and people really loved my work. My career goal if I were to go down this road is to write feature stories for New York Magazine and Esquire. Maybe I'm overthinking this...about 15 years ago, boy meets girl, becomes good friends with her, tries to take the relationship to the next level, is rejected, loses touch with her. 15 years later, boy is happily married, watches all the news about Japan, thinks about/is concerned about girl (she's from Japan, works/worked near Tokyo for some time, and her family lives/lived in Osaka), and Googles her. Boy finds out that girl appears to be married and living in the U.S. Boy would like to send her an email to ask if everyone (family/friends) is ok, but can only find her husband's email address. Boy thought about emailing her husband to pass along a message...something like "was an old friend but lost touch. Just wanted to say hi and make sure everyone's ok". That's it. No ulterior motives, no sneaky emails behind anyone's back. But then boy thought twice and wondered if that would be awkward or weird and if he should just drop it. Hive mind: what should boy do?

In 84 Charing Cross Rd Helene Hanff's 1st letter to the bookshop Marks and Co., written in October 1949, says she's responding to an ad she saw by them in the Saturday Review of Literature. One little problem: I recently went over a library archive of the Saturday Review. I couldn't find an ad from Marks and Co. in any of the October issues of 1949, nor in any of the issues in September, August, or July. This involved looking at both the display ads and the small-print classifieds. It also involved looking at the Saturday Review's 25th Anniversary issue, August 6, 1949, which was more than triple the size of a typical issue of the time (180+ pgs vs. 50+ pgs, and so many one-off advertisers it had an index to them). So... Has anyone ever seen this ad, that caused such a big change in Hanff's life? Did she perhaps get the magazine wrong? If so, which magazine was it in, and when?

I’ve settled on a professional grad programme I’d like to attend. It’s fairly competitive. Like almost every other such programme in Canada, minimum entry criteria include a four-year BA with a B+ average or higher (likely, much higher) in the final two years of study. Most will not consider applicants with any other profile, e.g., a three-year BA + GRE + additional courses taken as a visiting student, as has been suggested in other questions. I’m writing because I suspect I’ve got the stinkiest background imaginable - two undergrad attempts, and more. I sincerely thank in advance anyone with the patience to read further. [more inside]

Any other suggestions for inexpensive but fun cities?

Am contemplating selling current house and buying a new one, and wondering what's the best approach: 1.) Make the minimum down payment, and use profit from home sale to supplement now larger home payments (also getting the larger mortgage interest deduction. Or 2.) Plow as much of the profit from the home sale into the new home, thus having no cushion but having a smaller mortgage. I've always thought it was best to pay as little interest as possible, but then again, one hears you should try not to tie all up your money in an asset, etc. Thoughts? Anyone seen a spreadsheet breakdown on this? Or maybe there's an easy answer staring me right in the face.

Virtually all of my past relationships have had huge amounts of drama, a lot of which I have unintentionally encouraged. I have a tendency to pair up with emotionally withholding men, feel wounded and neglected, and then lash out verbally and emotionally in response. This has been my pattern for almost 20 years, yet now in my current relationship, I haven’t experienced this at all. I feel calm, collected, and content. Yet I haven’t made any conscious decisions to act differently - I just find myself behaving this way without trying. I am really happy about feeling so stable for a change, but it also seems too good to be true. Is it possible for a change like this to be legitimate and lasting? [more inside]

I have a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 Special Edition (http://autos.yahoo.com/2004_hyundai_tiburon_gt_v6_special_edition/) with 53k miles. Recently I noticed an odd sound when I press the clutch pedal. The best way to describe the sound is that it's very much like the rushing air sound you hear when a window is opened. The sound does vary just a bit in pitch depending on how far the clutch is pressed, and the sound stops when the clutch pedal is let back out. I'd swear it sounds like a hole being opened and closed. The sound is very subtle and can't be heard when the radio is up, so I don't know how long it's been there. I first noticed it several months ago and it hasn't changed since then, neither getting worse nor better. As best as I can determine, the sound is coming from the area underneath the pedal. The transmission seems to be working perfectly and I don't abuse the clutch in any way. Someone suggested that it could be the throwout bearing, but I've watched clips of that sound on-line and it doesn't quite match what I'm hearing. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have a friend who is being defamed on a couple web sites. They used her full name in some wordpress comments that did not require any authentication. All attempts to contact the webmaster have failed. All attempts to find an address to send correspondence to fail. I've read this and this. I do have the name of the company the domain is registered through by checking the Whois data. That is the only thing listed in the Whois. Other than the reputation builder stuff of trying to flood the internet with good things, what are some alternatives? Cease & desist to registrar? Hire a hacker to remove the comments? Anything outside the box? The person in question is in fact a lawyer. . .so any legal actions can be taken for cheap . . .
