What reason is there to believe that the recently-passed health care bill is affordable for America? Sure, the CBO projects it to reduce deficits, but isn't it required to use possibly unrealistic legislative assumptions, like Medicare cuts that have never been implemented in the past? Given the incredible growth of Medicare and Social Security costs over the last decades, the powerful interests (like doctors) that may stand against harsh cost-cutting, and the US's aging but heavily-voting population -- what reason is there to believe this bill doesn't start up yet another fiscally irresponsible and politically untouchable entitlement program?

A few years back, my friend Russell (mid-twenties, American, white, male) was in Scotland, at a bus stop. Since then, my dad has been laid off, and my health insurance through my work will not pay for anything until I've met a $2000 cap. I am a 13 year IT professional who was laid off from my job back in early 2008. After months of unsuccessful job hunting, I did the stay-at-home-dad thing for over a year before I landed a job as an office manager at a small store. (well cashier, but I also do light book-keeping, fix the computers, do the payroll, AP, AR, etc...) With the economy (hopefully) picking up, I want to update my resume and get aggressive about job hunting again, but am hesitant to put this job in my resume. Will this hurt or help? How and where does a chick in her late twenties meet guys in Los Angeles? I'm single for the first time in eons, and I'm just starting to come out of my shy shell, too. I'm looking forward to the casual dating scene, except I'm clueless as to where to go (and what to do)! I *don't* want to try anything internet-related (not even meetups) this time. The internet's always been a crutch for me, and I want to overcome that. I will sometimes be with other friends, but sometimes I'm going to be on my own. Which I'm excited about! ...but a total n00b. This is likely a dumb question. :) But I have this little microwave. Both the glass turntable and the plastic wheel thing are broken. The microwave itself works fine and heats things up. Short of dripping stuff down into the motor enclosure where the wheel+turntable would normally sit, can I use this microwave normally long-term with no worries? I'm assuming that the only difference is the food would be unevenly heated (I could manually turn), but I just wanted to make sure the turntable motor business wasn't connected to anything else. Replacements would cost more than the microwave at this point.

What are prevalent upper-class social markers of speech in the US (if any)? I'm from continental Western Europe; the Netherlands. I asked my US girlfriend what upper class speech markers exist in the US. Because in NL I can place people quite quickly as coming from a specific upper class or lower class background just by hearing the way they speak. I am thinking about having some microdermabrasion treatments. I do not have scars, just some stubborn mila and mild rosacea. I have done research but am getting confused with all the choices and methods. I am in the LA area, so have a big selection of Med-Spas where the treatments are given by an RN or LVN. What is the difference between SmartPeel or Vibraderm or a SilkPeel, or...they go on and on. Does anyone have any direct experience with the various methods. Don't tell me to see my dermatologist, as Kaiser doesn't deal with optional aesthetic procedures. I use some prescription creams, Metronidazole works better than Retin A, for the rosacea.

I am unable to find a song that I once had on my iPod. It's a post-rock number. Although there are no lyrics (that I recall, anyway), there is an extended sample (I don't know from where) of a guy talking about a hot night when the power went out in his apartment complex. He talks about a woman who lit candles, and somehow in the end this leads to an apartment fire. The song feels like the soundtrack to a dream. My memory is not 100% on these details. It's been well over a year since I heard it. But the song was really good and I think about it now and then and I really miss having it. Anyone recognize it?

Prompted by this comment, I'm here to ask what the deal is with "calories" as a measure of "nutritional content" (whatever that means). I understand that the calorie value we see on food packaging is arrived at by burning the food in a calorimeter, and that this would be an effective measure of the total chemical energy in the substance. How well does this actually approximate the energy our body can put to use (mechanically, or for other biological processes)? Isn't this measure essentially useless for people trying to lose weight? Why do we put so much emphasis on it then? Are there some foods which have an astronomical number of calories which our digestive systems can do little with?

The fact that drugs aren't marketed as being x% more effective than another drug makes me more than suspicious. Where can I find comparison information of old vs new drugs? new vs generics? I'll give you an example. I have allergy problems. Doctors try to tell me about the latest xyz antihistamine. These doctors are paid by the drug companies to sell me this stuff, and can't seem to give me any apples to apples comparisons. Is allegra more affective than diphenhydramine? Is x more affective than y? Were the best drugs already found, and the newer drugs crappier, or is it the other way around, or neither? Why isn't this openly published and available? What the hell happened to the scientific method?

What was this computer I had as a kid? It was in the early to mid 80s. It was small (barely bigger than the keyboard). It had a very small built-in display (LCD, I think). There was a membrane keyboard. It took cartridges, and some of the carts came with keyboard templates. There's one in particular I remember that had information about countries of the world, and the template had one flag for each key. I seem to recall the plastic case being beige, but I'm not 100% sure. It could play sounds, and there was a cart for composing music. What was this thing?

(please do not remind me that there are sanctioned "dog parks": the one near me is a small area for a large number of dogs without a tree or a blade of grass in sight. it is a disgrace.) thank you for any info.

Hi, I searched through the archives and did not find a match. Thank you in advance. Let's say I have a spreadsheet in Google docs with two columns, names and dollar amounts. Jane Smith, $5; Joe Sixpack, $7; Jane Goodall, $4; Joe Frankin, $10, etc. I want to use – I think – the QUERY function to ADD up all the dollars that all the Joe's have, or all the dollars that the Jane's have. I have read through as much documentation as I can find and it's not giving me enough to formulate a successful query. This:
=query(A1:B20, "Select A where (A contains 'jane')", sum(B))does not work. Any suggestions? thank you!

Carleton v. Wesleyan. I'll be seeing my nephew next week, and he has his future whittled down to these two colleges. Not that it will really have an effect, but I'd like to appear to know more than that it is colder in Minnesota, and asking MeFites seemed easier (and maybe more astute) than reading a lot of PR things. Neither he nor I know what he will major in, but probably nothing practical (ie. if he doesn't wind up an academic, he'll be applying to law schools sooner or later.). Any opinions or insights?

I'm an amateur astrologist and a few months back found a terrific and comprehensive (and free) website that provided broad stroke explanations as well as detailed minutiae regarding horoscope readings. Of course, I didn't bookmark the site and can't seem to find it in my history. Knowing this isn't much to go on, I can recall that the site provided detailed individual readings (again, free) for all facets of life (love, sex, money, career, travel, etc. etc.) as well as friendship pairings and love matches. Any help in finding the site would be greatly appreciated and paid back to you in some karmic cosmic way, I'm sure.
i grew up in a home where asking an innocent question such as, "why" resulted in verbal or physical abuse ("why are you so stupid", "don't ask why", and if I did, a hand or a fist would come at me). no surprise that i've also come to realize that I am SO much more insecure than I thought I was. now that I look back, I see that i've never asked the right questions at work, with doctors, or anything like that. My brain would shut down and I would just nod and agree to what I was being told only to think about what happened much later and realize that I should have asked this or that or responded in a certain way. My thought/response patterns have been pretty consistent throughout my life (sad, I know, as I'm nearing 40) and I desperately want to work on communicating better. I struggle to figure out how to say things "nicely" or in a way that's effective as opposed to what often times is more harsh/rude/ineffective. [more inside]

Is it possible to draw unemployments benefits in Georgia, while having a LLC and the business making money, but not paying myself? Around September 2009, I formed an LLC and made a couple thousand through the end of 2009. I am filing taxes for the LLC as needed. Today I poured cream into my coffee whilst standing up. As the cream 'billowed' through the coffee, I happened to rotate my body but kept my eyes on the coffee, and I noticed that the cream 'clouds' seemed to remain in the same place while the mug turned around them, i.e. the turning motion of the mug had no effect on the 'absolute' position of the goings-on inside it. I think this is kinda cool, and I'm just curious: what principle of physics is this based on? Can someone explain to me how/why this works?

You have digital pictures that are cropped to various rectangular dimensions, but you want to print each of them on 4"x6" paper without losing any of the image. Of course any that are not a 4x6-ratio image - that's most of them - will need to have some white letterboxing. Can any of the standard consumer on-line photo printing services do this automatically, as a batch request? Just print whatever I upload, but fit each one entirely on 4"x6" paper? Shutterfly and Snapfish customer service (for example) said I'd have to go in and adjust the cropping for each picture individually.

Is this possible in the U.S.?
