My brother's looking for a challenging martial arts studio in the DC, Northern Virginia area. He's really good at jiu-jitsu, but he's most interested in any studio, no matter what the style, where the difficulty level is extremely high. He doesn't care about getting belts or competing, just about learning through through losing, essentially. Any recommendations?

Over the last year, I've started to cry when I orgasm. While it was an occasional thing at first, it's turned into something that happens every time I come. I live in Madison WI and am looking to move to a larger city, under the impression that being in a larger city will provide me with more exposure and greater opportunities. I was thinking of moving to the outskirts of Chicago because it's close to my family in Madison and I love it there. I also miss Denver CO where I was born, but am unsure what kind of an art community it has. Does anyone know what cities are best for making a living as an artist? I have a degree in illustration but am also trying to get into gallery shows as well if that helps. Thank you very much for any advice.

Who has used a soft-sided dog crate for a large dog? Will it provide secure confinement for short periods? We are moving from NJ to the west coast. Our elderly dog is too frail to travel by air, so we will drive a 6-day road trip. For the road trip, I need a portable crate that will stow in our car trunk. We need the crate to set up in motel rooms. I want dog to have his "den". We do not plan to leave him alone, but there could be situations where he has to be kept confined for his safety. My new husband has an ex-wife and daughter who live in Colorado. They've been divorced a long time, not exactly on "friendly" terms, but certainly civil, for their daughter's sake. Recently, the kid's grades have been slipping (she's in 8th grade) and Mom decided she needed some tutoring. She signed her up for $10,000 worth of tutoring, without telling my husband in advance, then turned around and demanded half the tuition from him. My husband pays child support, has never been late, even though he's currently unemployed. He told her he couldn't afford $5,000 and even if he could, he doesn't think he should have to pay since she didn't consult him in advance or discuss the matter with him. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this kind of thing. Does he have to pay her?

My wife has a shiny new unibody Macbook. We have observed a bizarre display bug. The bug is intermittent and temporary. What happens is that the contents (or some of the contents) of the front window will appear in grayscale. Resizing or scrolling the window, or clicking on an element in the window, will usually make it go away. This happens in all kinds of apps: the Finder, Safari, InDesign, etc. It happens on an external screen and the laptop's own screen (with or without the external hooked up). [more inside]

I've been rewatching Carl Sagan's Cosmos since I found out it's available on Hulu. Last night, I was watching the episode in which Carl describes how the solar system was formed via the coalescence of particulate matter. But, something struck me as rather odd: if hydrogen and helium are lighter than the heavy elements (duh!) why is it that THEY coalesced into the center of the solar system to become the Sun? It seems to me the heavier elements would migrate towards the center of the maelstrom a bit faster than the lighter ones. Haven't been able to find out the reason for this, hoping the hive can help.
I want to put some code on my site (Wordpress) displaying images of books and other Amazon products, and link the images, with my Associates key, back to Amazon. Amazon offers several ways to do this. I don't like them. A batch of WP plugins offer to do this, but the ones I've tested are all overkill, if they actually work. I can handle the code, but where do I get the images? I've seen a few sites that pull book cover images from a secure image site at Amazon. How does that work?

I am interested in academic librarianship. I am currently finishing my first year in an MLIS program. I already have my Master's Degree in computer science and am currently working as a computer programmer in an academic library in Southern California. I'm curious as to what the job market is like out there for academic librarians now. I know that many universities have experienced dramatic budget cuts recently and several (including ours) have instituted hiring freezes. I won't be graduating for another year or more but I'm curious as to what the climate is like out there now. Are there many openings? Also, given my programming background, what areas do you think it's best for me to focus on in my studies? What is going to make me hireable and look good on a resume?

Recent research has concluded that strong volcanic plumes exhibit cyclonic, storm-like rotation, which helps explain why volcanic thunderstorms occur. The article indicates that the volcanic plume from Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 exhibited anticlockwise rotation, which I infer to be consistent with the rotation of a low-pressure system in the northern hemisphere. My question: Will the rotational direction of these volcanic mesocyclones be governed by the Coriolis Effect, local atmospheric conditions, compositional characteristics of the plume, or some combination of these factors?

Initiating awkward hook-up time! So here's the deal, MeFi. I developed a major crush on a guy after only knowing him for about three weeks, and, in a drunken flirtation session, stupidly told him. My firm has just announced one-week furloughs for most employees. What struck me as odd was that the email included an attachment labelled "Activities". When I opened it, it was a list: "Top 20 Things to do While on Furlough". Examples:
* Clean out your garage and other storage places and hold a garage sale.
* Go hiking with your pet.
* Renew your library card.
It's like management is just begging to be parodized. Alas, I have not the comedy chops to do it well. Anyone want to suggest some good parody "activities" I could pursue whilst on furlough?

Freelance Filter: I've resigned due to timeline pressures, the arrival of another awesome opportunity, and the fact that I'm 8 months pregnant. I've done six weeks of work which have contributed social capital and goodwill to the project, and organizational/planning work which will be of benefit to my replacement. The "contract" we signed was vague and was only really a statement of work, rather than conditions. In my letter of resignation I proposed to keep 20% of the 1st payment for the work done to date. The team that hired me wants all the money back, I think mainly because they're deeply disappointed that I have quit. It's not like I've been sitting on my hands, and my work to date will benefit them. Thanks to NPR, I understand that securitized mortgages are bundled together and divided into traunches, and that this is bundling and dividing process is what makes these securities so difficult to deal with. Is there no way to "reassemble" the traunches and de-securitize the mortgages? It seems like that would make valuation easier to determine, and help with isolating bad mortgages/ investments.

I'm wondering about medical marijuana use in California and to what degree it is covered by health information privacy laws (HIPAA). I ask because my profession is regulated by a state licensing board (and an ethics board, and a national ethics board, etc. etc.) and I want to know if the Board of Behavioral Sciences could ever have access to my medical information if I were to have a card for medical MJ (this is assuming that I am only registered with the state as a legal patient, not ever picked up by the cops for any reason or have anything close to a criminal record, which I already know would get my licensing taken away). I have been searching info on medical MJ and HIPAA but have not been able to find anything conclusive. Throwaway email is firstname.lastname@example.org.

We just lost our car in a garage fire, should we now lease or buy? We live in a condo, and a bunch of us homeowners lost our cars (and other belongings) in a garage fire. My wife and I want to know the hive-mind's opinion on whether we should lease or buy now that we're forced into the market for a new car. Some information: we're "tree-huggers" so we appreciate good gas mileage (and we're enamored with the upcoming 3rd gen Honda Insight). But we also drive the cars a ton, we drive everywhere. We live in Indianapolis, but our parents and families are on the east coast, so we drive to NYC and the D.C. area multiple times a year; not to mention the Chicago area, too. So that would also be a consideration whether we lease or buy... Thanks for anyone's opinion.

I just blew out an old Nakamichi stereo receiver because the signal from my computer's audio output seemed to overload the machine. The receiver clicked a couple of times (reverting to silence each time before resuming normal volume), then quite literally heated up and died. I don't think it's the receiver's fault necessarily, since something similar happened with my previous stereo receiver--in terms of its getting overloaded from the computer's audio signal and shutting down with a loud click. I'm just using the sound card that came with my 3 year old Dell desktop--and I want to make sure this doesn't happen again to the next receiver (I'm using a receiver because I need to drive some old ADS speakers). Any suggestions? I tried using different inputs on the receiver (video, tape, CD, even phono) thinking it might be an issue of too strong a signal coming into the machine. But regardless of the input selection, the same problem would occur--whenever volume got too loud (and I did try lowering the volume on the computer itself) there would be a loud click, then silence. Should I just forget using an external amplifier at all and just use the horrible computer speakers that came with the machine? Thanks

I'm looking for financial advice resources that are beyond square one. I've tried following sites like The Simple Dollar, Get Rich Slowly, and I Will Teach You To Be Rich but these sites seem catered to people who are in a rough spot with lots of credit card debt, etc. I don't need advice on cutting up my credit cards or reducing my power bill (I know little stuff adds up and I'm doing all right with the little stuff). I'm looking for square 2 advice: investing, financial planning, real estate, tax shelters... I have a good job, a house, little debt, and some savings. Now what? I'm looking for advice on how to go from okay shape to better. Not bad shape to okay. Any good resources out there? Keep in mind: I am a financial and investing moron. I am looking for layman-friendly resources. Thanks!

I'd like a good hands-only dancing game for the Wii. I've really been enjoying Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party's dance mini-game, but there's only seven songs. And lots of the other dance games for Wii seem to involve a DDR-style dance pad (which, while fun for me, will be way less fun for my downstairs neighbors). We Cheer seems to be along the lines of what I'm looking for, but in an ideal world, I could get this kind of game without a bunch of prepubescent large-headed midriff-baring girls manically screaming rainbows at me.
What's this song? It was on US Top 40 radio in the late 80s. It's a mashup sorta thingie of musical styles, starting out with a big band playing "In the Mood" and moving forward through different popular music styles to the modern day. IIRC at the very end there is a brief return to a little bit of In the Mood.

Help me identify a toy! Around 1980 (in the northeastern United States) there was a line of small games contained within sealed plastic boxes approximately five inches long, two and half across, and perhaps half an inch thick (13 x 6 x 1cm, about the size of a pocket calculator back then). Many contained one or more small steel balls. Some, with flippers, took the form of a pinball or basketball game. Others were mazes or other puzzles. Some contained plastic beads floating in fluid. Some involved magnets. I had a bunch of these at one point but I cannot remember who made them or what they were called.

A couple of friends and I are organising a site-specific installation for the Smart Light Festival (flash w/ sound) to be held in Sydney from May 26 to June 14 this year. While I would appreciate any advice on bringing an installation like this to fruition, I was hoping specifically to get feedback on our plans to pre-fabricate the components (basically if they seem feasible, and if there are cheaper more efficient ways of going about it, how to use less energy, and especially how we could reuse or recycle the materials).
