Who performed these music videos? Years ago I watched MTV in the early morning when they aired all the zany gainaxy music videos. Three of those stand out in memory for their sheer surreal nexus currency. [more inside]
Speaking of the Twilight Zone a few questions down, from where came the New Year's Eve marathon tradition? I know SyFy (ugh) has it now, but I believe I remember watching it on WPIX way back when. That may have been 4th of July, though. Anyone know it's origins or what year it started?
What did I eat? Fifty years ago, when I was a kid, a friend's Japanese mother made us a snack. She pulled 2 plain, fist sized rice balls from the fridge and sprinkled a dark green, watery sauce on them. It was salty and fishy tasting. It may have had some dark green flecks in it. I've seen nothing like it in Asian markets, and I think it may have been homemade, for it was poured from a wine bottle with a metal liquor spout tube. I've wondered for years.
Talking Tina, how do you talk? I'm watching the Twilight Zone marathon with Talking Tina. Given the technology available in 1963, how would such a toy work? The general talking part, not the evil inanimate object part.

How does a paranoid psychotic episode end? Assuming that someone is on medication that starts working, does it tend to be a sudden thing where they wake up one day and they no longer believe in any of the huge conspiracy their mind had created? Or do they gradually stop believing the least plausible delusions one by one? Or do they stop feeling the terror associated with it first, and maybe even continue to believe that all that stuff DID happen to them, but that it isn't an ongoing threat any more? Or do they maybe just become more open to logical arguments against their beliefs? [more inside]

I've been saving big into a college fund since my child was born 8 years ago, on the order of $900 per month. I recently checked the 529 plan that was receiving the funds and it is currently at $90k. There is still a decade before the child would enter college, and by most estimates that could mean a doubling and a bit more if market averages do ok. My investment guy says a kid in the year 2022 might need $300k for tuition at a prestigious college and that I should continue. I think I'm pretty well set for now and it could be around $200k by then with no added input. Should I continue putting money away in this account or should I divert that into my own retirement (which is doing well too, but could always be better)? Or contribute less? When is enough enough for college?

Whole lamb: spit roast or roast on grill (or cut up and grill?). Planning an outdoor festive summer wedding, and the menu is smoked brisket and lamb. I've long wanted to spit roast a lamb, or roast it whole in the ground, but I've also been hearing from experienced hands that this is not great for lamb (although it is traditional), because different parts of the lamb are best cooked to different temperatures--they suggest getting a whole lamb butchered, and roasting the cuts individually. Does anyone have any experience, or suggestions, they can share? I saw this thread, but it didn't speak to the overall advisability of the endeavor. Thanks!

Help me understand a passage from a law book (on freedom of contract) + recommend me resources for further reading!
Help me understand a passage from a law book: The most important consequence of changing views about freedom of contract in the period of 1870-1980 was the rise of the various institutions associated with the 'welfare state'. Is there any way to make the new iTunes tighter and more minimalist? For example, I want my podcast and artist lists to be like the small-font, compact lists they used to be. Similar to the column browser, but on the side, NOT the top (which is all kinds of stupid up there). Basically, I want to see as many artists as possible with as little scrolling as possible. Any add-on or script or setting I'm overlooking that could take care of this, and perhaps other inefficiencies of the new iTunes?

We are a relatively new couple in our friends' lives, both in our 40s, socially functional and generous, but not always gracious. Not always the best and most skilled hosts. We have very different kinds of friends who are unused to each other - some are dedicated to not getting along with each others' philosophies ad beliefs - and we'd like to know how to integrate everyone in our parties in the most fair ways with the best chance of getting folks to know and like each other. We'd like our guests to be comfortable and to want to come back and visit again. There is a fly in the ointment of communal friendship (and, frankly, we're afraid that some of our friends may come to shouting matches with each other) and I'm looking for good coping mechanisms and strategies for achieving this among potentially contentious friends. iTunes Filter. 1. Why would the information for a song (e.g. artist name, song name) be displayed properly in iTunes but in Media Monkey/SAM the artist name is missing and the song name is listed with a number in front of it? 2. Also in Media Monkey/SAM, there are many duplicates of songs that aren't duplicated in iTunes (and these will have the artist name and the song name listed properly). Please note that this is not the case with all my songs (over 21,000), but enough of them (maybe 2,000--3,000) that it does pose a problem when I'm DJing or organising my music. Plus, y'know, I have a tidy mind and this is bugging me.

Half the websites out there seem to have decided (roughly all at the same time) that full width toolbars or promotional bars that rise up at screen bottom and cover up content, or slide-in promotional boxes that obtrude themselves from screen lower left or lower right or both and cover up content, are absolutely wonderful ideas. Ad-blockers don't seem to think they're ads since what they're flacking for is the same site you're already on (The VERY NEXT New York Times story you'll want to read is...) rather than something in a different domain. She meets children from the past there. There is a scene where the narrator finds an old photograph and sees the girl in it. In this book, or possibly its sequel, there is some going back and forth in time to find buried treasure at the house in modern times. I don't remember the reading level but it may be considered a children's book or YA book. It was probably written sometime between 1960 and 1980, and I think I read it in the early 1990s.

How can I unlock an iphone tied to t-mobile in the UK? I have received as a Christmas present an iphone which is locked to t-mobile. I am currently on an 02 contract that ties me for a further 6 months. Clearly, I would like to use my 02 sim with this iphone, however, when I went to a shop who specialised in phone unlocking, to get it unlocked, I was told that he could not unlock it and that it would take atleast a month to get t-mobile to unlock it. It was also mentioned that the merger of t-mobile in to the new company everything everywhere will probably delay the unlocking further. I am getting the impression that I will be forced to take out a t-mobile contract as it stands. Anyone out there have any recent knowledge about t-mobile unlocking. Many thanks!

This is a name-that-song. There's a somewhat recent song that is sort of similar to the refrain from Air's "Surfing on a Rocket" - the chords that start the song's main progression seem to have the same intervalic movement as the beginning of the refrain in SoR, and both songs have staccato clean guitar parts, though the guitar in the more recent song is more busy & sounds like it has the sharp string-on-fret attack of hammer-on playing (I could be wrong about that). I know I know this song & it is driving me crazy. For sociocultural context, I heard it last night in a bar/restaurant in Silverlake (Los Angeles). Thanks, amazing people!

Where can myself, a friend, and our dogs go for a sweet overnight trip near LA next week? We'd like to do some hiking and some casual beer drinking, and we'd like to be able to get a cheap hotel room and not drive more than 3 hours or so. Also, although we're both in good shape, his dog is 12 years old and mine is a wimpy shih tzu so the hike should be fairly easy and would ideally have some access to water. I think it's too cold to camp, but if there's somewhere warmish we're open to that. Lay it on me, mefi!

Ever since I've had a facebook account, I've had it set so that nobody can add me as a friend; I must add them first. Recently, I added a friend of mine, and I didn't receive a confirmation that he accepted; I could simply see his wall and stuff an hour or so after I added him. When we hung out next, he said, "So, you finally added me on facebook." He'd apparently added me two years ago and to him, I'd never confirmed, but I'd never even received notification of his request. I've had my fb account for years; certainly there must be other people I've inadvertently offended in this way. How can I view pending incoming friend requests, when I've never received notifications for them?

Philosophically, I believe in eating a plant-based vegan diet. In practice, it has proven difficult, as we are so disconnected from the animals that we are consuming. The most difficult for me is giving up dairy. So HiveMind, please help me by recommending books and DVDs on modern -day factory farming , which will reconnect me with the animals I am consuming. I am hoping that by seeing their suffering I will be no longer be able to be complicate in their exploitation. I have Our Daily Bread on DVD, and have Earthlings on hold from the library. I see there is a series on Peta.org, called Meet Your Meat. But, I really want a DVD, I'm not trying to watch stuff on my computer. I have also seen the Got the Facts on Milk documentary, but I really what to have a visual connection between dairy cows and the production of milk, so that when I think of consuming dairy I have an image that would deter me from doing so.

Okay, this is a bad time to be without money and there's nothing I can really do to change that immediately. I am on assistance. I have food stamps that can buy only food stuff. Because of last minute car repairs and things like extra gas for appointments that I couldn't miss with government agencies, I have zero on the cash assistance (non-food side of food stamps). I slowly developed a cold today. It's just a cold. Sore throat, coughing, running nose and headache. I have Tylenol for the headache, but my throat is killing me and coughing keeps adding to the burn. There's no money for non-food cough/throat stuff. No cough drops or meds. I'm looking for an essay I read in a textbook. This would've been in the late 90s and it was a middle school Literature textbook. The essay was about writing. I remember that it included a bit about how you can't ask writers about writing for the same reason you can't ask the sea about itself (it will just gurgle at you). It also had a bit about breaking the rules when writing, talking about how writing guides tell you never to open a story with dialogue but then gave an example of a classic novel that opened with dialogue in French. I have a rather specific question regarding iTunes and android. I'm looking for an app that will locally save, on my android phone, the data of what is in my itunes library in a browsable way, WITHOUT actually having to put the music itself on my phone. I'm imagining an app that could, say, parse my iTunes library file and let me save & browse it on my phone. (The reason I want something like this is because I use Amazon's cloud drive to store my music, and it's a great service, but the Amazon mp3 app is not very good for browsing my music collection. For example, I can't search by genre or composer there. Moving to another cloud provider, eg Google Play or iTunes match, won't work because they don't provide sufficient space.)
Are there any good historical/scholarly studies of false flag operations? Not so much chroinicles of a specific single event, but more about how common they've actually been throughout history, how effective they tend to be, how they are eventually disclosed (whether on purpose or not), etc. They seem to be the core of a lot of conspiracy theories ("9/11 was an inside job", "Oswald was a tool of the CIA", and so on), and I'm curious about how prevalent the real thing is.

How bad is traffic in Dubai on Sundays in the afternoon/evening? My wife and I have 24 hours in Dubai, beginning on a Sunday. We arrive to our hotel (right next to the airport) around 5:15PM, and we're taking the Bateaux dinner cruise leaving at 8:30PM. My plan between these two times is to take her to the Royal Mirage down by Jumeira for drinks. Online, it's looking like a taxi will take roughly 40 minutes to cover the distance from the airport to Jumeira, assuming no traffic. But on a Sunday (which is a work day in Dubai, as I understand it?), I'm worried: will the roads be totally clogged at that time of day? Or will a taxi be able to get us there in a reasonable amount of time?

I'd like it to be clear and easy to understand in regards to aperture, depth of field, dynamic range etc. , but I'd also like it to have some ray optics to get her to think about why the camera works the way it does (focal depth, optics etc). Any suggestion would be great.
I’ve been researching a lot, and have read time and time again, that during interviews, you’re also interviewing the employer to see if you’re a “good fit” together and that you should never seem desperate for a job, but rather, you should pretend money is no object and you’re only there because you think it would be fun, etc. The question is—how do you do this when you are in fact desperate for money and you need a job ASAP? I'll soon have to travel semi-frequently from Hartford to NYC for work stuff, at both peak and off-peak times. I'm guessing the best option is to park-and-ride at some station along the Metro North line, but where should I park? This AskMe said Bridgeport Station is the best option, but that was almost six years ago - has anything changed? Would a station in New York state proper be better - Port Chester, etc? I'll also have to travel pretty late some nights in case that makes a difference.

Many years ago (perhaps a decade or more), I read an interesting article that argued there were essentially two types of coaches in professional sports: low-pressure (perhaps someone like Phil Jackson) and high-pressure (say, Bill Parcells). Both styles had their positives and negatives, but the author went on to say that if a low-pressure coach failed, you never wanted to replace him with someone even lower-pressure, and vice-versa, since that would only exacerbate what had already gone wrong. It might have been in the New Yorker, but I really can't say. Ringing any bells? Thanks!

The Short: I'm a single young adult with a college degree and student loan debt. I live in a sterile small city with limited job prospects. I want to move out and get an entry-level or temporary job in a coastal U.S. city (NYC, LA, SF, Seattle). Please walk me through the logistics and help me devise a plan, as well as offer any advice you have on making it on your own in a new city (essentially, how to be an independent, self-sufficient adult). I am often spaced-out and disconnected. This happens often but it definitely happens when a situation becomes emotionally intense or emotionally difficult. This is possibly linked to my ADHD (inattentive type). Also possibly to the fact that my mother is very dramatic and when I was young she expressed all her emotions with great intensity, and I was often frightened. If you or someone you know have experienced this, what has made it better? [more inside]

Question for the hard-core commerce and security geeks: Always-on SSL, or AOSSL. Last spring The Online Trust Alliance, or OTA, started a PR campaign to convince folks who manage web sites to use SSL to secure the entirety of their web sites — not just forms and checkout pages. OTA points out that some large social sites (Twitter, Facebook, Google) — folks for whom the customer is the product — have implemented AOSSL, or are in the process of doing so. Who I *don't* see coming on-board are large and highly trafficked e-commerce sites. By my survey, none of the top 100 eCommerce vendors (using Internet Retailer's list) have implemented AOSSL, and I'm wondering if there's a reason why... (more inside). [more inside]

Help me find a little black dress. I'm in my mid-20s, short (5'2"), and curvy (dress size 4-8, depending on much curvature they allow), and it should look good with black knee-high boots and 'hose. So I'm thinking maybe something that stops at mid-thigh. It should be something dressy enough for a NYE party and classy enough to wear to a work holiday party. Pure black preferred, but different textures and shapes are welcomed. I own a lot of fit & flare dresses, so I'm comfortable with that, or I can get a more sheath like dress...? It needs to be from somewhere (local to Seattle or online) where I can return for free (including shipping). Budget: $20 to $300 for the right dress.

- Less than $100
- Probably within 1 - 2 hours drive of the East bay / Oakland / Walnut Creek, California
- Gift will be for an individual, but with a family, so family friendly preferred
- Will mail me a gift certificate / gift card online or via phone.

After reading a number of articles such as this on Metafilter, I realized that I might want to have kids soon, before it's too late. I have a biological clock and that instinct is telling me I ought to propagate before my sperm becomes useless. However, I have no immediate desire to parent anyone. My instincts are only concerned with reproduction, not any of the details. My thought is that I could become a sperm donor. I have no emotional need to ever meet my kids (though I have nothing against it either) - it would be enough to know that they're out there somewhere. However, I am confused by some of the potential ramifications. (Snowflake details inside.) [more inside]
My girlfriend caught a horrible cold a couple days ago (I'm sure if I get it I'll get it sooner rather than later). She normally doesn't get sick, so this is a new thing for her. Here's the complication... Normal medication such as ibuprofen and aspririn don't affect her. She got a pretty bad cold. Went to the pharmacy for help. She's been taking psuedephredrine, ibuprofen, mucinex, etc. (she normally doesn't take anything ever) At this point she's a bit out of her normal mindframe. I'm looking for suggestions that will keep her focused until tomorrow when she comes down and we can discuss what happened. [more inside]
