I know a couple of folks with gas stoves, and they have trouble with a sticky residue coating their walls and ceiling around the range. They describe it as inherent to cooking with gas. (It's really disgusting.) Yet other folks I know who cook with gas don't report any such problems. Is this a known problem? Any idea why it would affect some people, but not others? Different types of gas (natural vs. propane)? Badly-tuned stoves? Something they're cooking? [more inside]

Need help with Interest-Only Mortgage and the Benefits (if any) of Paying Principal in this Housing Market...

"The DNA of humans and chimps is 98.4% identical." I've read that several places. I've also read "The DNA of all living things is 90% identical" and "The DNA of humans and lettuce is 16% identical." How could I find out which of those last two statements is correct? Or is the problem that I don't understand which part of the DNA is being referred to? (Frankly, I'm not that clear on DNA in the first place - I'd just like the right number.)

I have a really cool job: I help low-income/minority students get into college.
(It's perfect for me because I'm passionate about educational access and I get to work with young people one-on-one, but I'm not tied down to a classroom.)

In Japan, upon entering a shop or restaurant I was pelted with this greeting. This was over ten years ago. There is a restaurant in my neighborhood (brooklyn) where the staff says this (or something, it happens quicly). I have a medium-sized run of printed circuit boards that'd be most cost-effective for me to silkscreen/photo-etch at home. I'm pretty sure I got that part covered... lots of tutorials available [1, 2, 3, etc]. It'd be a shame, though, to build this setup and then not use it again, so I'm wondering where are some great repositories for (all types of) PCB layouts? Added difficulty: Would like reasonable descriptions of "what they do" and how the boards are likely to be employed. [more inside]
Someone near to me has recently recognised, and begun to address, a serious problem with debt. The debt is not a result of extravagant spending; it seems to stem from persistently bad decisions about consumer credit, and a habit of repaying loans with other loans. So... once the debt has been consolidated and the credit cards have been destroyed, what measures can this person take to ensure they never, ever get into debt again? Is it possible to voluntarily ban oneself from being offered credit? The person is in Australia.
I have a close friend with whom I've recently become infatuated. However, he has a girlfriend, so I've held my tongue. I long to see him, but then it's painful when I do. How do I get over this? If I just stop seeing him, how to explain it? I assume a polite fiction ("I'm really busy...") would hurt and confuse him, but I certainly don't want to burden him with the truth.

Hi. I'm looking for recommendations for books of children's music. I would like to put together a collection of songs to play for my little one. I am a beginner-intermediate guitarist - so chords are important. I grew up on Raffi and Sharon, Lois and Bram (I guess that tells you where I'm from) and any traditional/folky stuff would be great. I already own rise-up-singing which is a good start, but I think there is a lot more out there. Also, any music based on dancing purple dinosaurs or other similar characters won't make the cut. Thanks for your ideas.

Computer won't recognize wireless adaptor. My mum just bought a Lenovo SL400 notebook computer that was running Vista Basic. I was assigned the task of reformatting the computer and installing a free copy of Vista Business I happened to have. What's wrong?

sorry if this is just so insanely obscure it is impossible. I heard this record that was apparantly a new york band. It was pretty obscure (probably the kind of thing reviewed in the Wire or a similar magazine) and may be classed under such genres as 'new weird america' or freak folk. Musically it was sort of a mishmash of electronica and some feedback and acousticy stuff with a male vocalist, and (this is the key thing) was a double album and probably quite recent (2007 or 08). May have been considered suitable for a late night mood. Any suggestions?

My landlord is trying to deregulate the rent stabilized status of my NYC apartment/home that I have lived in for 15 years. By law he can do this if my income is above $175,000 and the rent is over $2000 a month. I personally do not earn close to this but the rent is over $2000. Question, if I am the sole leaseholder and have a roommate (month to month status) does our combined income qualify towards this total or is it only applicable to the leaseholder? Basically, I need a roommate to afford the rent and I am trying to find out if I should renew my upcoming lease.

The first time I have sex with a person, I have a really difficult time getting an erection. Everything could be going right and feeling right, but I just don't get hard. Sometimes not at all. This is not a problem I have by myself or with my partner (who thinks I get hard too often, too easily as it is), so it's usually not an issue, except for the occasional threesome or one night stand. I know that it's more of a mental thing than a physical thing, but how do I overcome it. [more inside]

I believe my company, a government contractor, is using alot of grey areas in their employee time cards to get away with paying as little as possible. Last minute Christmas dessert. Someone at my wife's work made this. It's a "cake" made by taking three pies (pecan, pumpkin, apple) and smashing them one on top of the other into a three-layer "Pie Cake". It was frosted with Pecan Coconut frosting. Apparently it was very very good. We can't get in touch with the guy who made it, so we were hoping the hive mind could help us out. Bonus points for anything that leads to any Adobe certifications. Thanks! Any other suggestions would be great as well (she's learning Fireworks and InDesign right now too).

What techniques can you use to avoid falling into the family dynamic trap? By that I mean, for the first few hours/days everything's fine with parents and siblings, my identity is intact, but soon after, somehow, we're all playing the same parts we always played (we've all flown the nest)... The other day I bought a package of a popular brand of vegetarian breakfast link "sausage." I bought it in the late morning and I forgot it in the cab of my truck for about seven hours on a day that saw temperatures reach the mid-60s. It's been in my freezer for a couple of days now, but should I just toss it? Or do you think it's safe to eat since it's not real meat?

Apart from some dating in college I never had a serious relationship until age 33 because of my social anxiety, and all those single years felt really lonely. Yet even now I am in one with some who loves me, and wants to get married to me, I cannot help escape ambivalent feelings. I look at random women in coffee shops and wish I could be with one of them instead purely because I feel more physical attraction to them. I find myself bored because my partner and I are with each other 24/7 and look forward to being with my friends more than I appreciate being with her. Our relationship seems so-so and I feel uninspired to make the effort to change it. But I feel this is my best chance BY FAR of happiness since if we broke up it could literally be years before either of us could attract someone else (both of us are significantly overweight and have mental health problems). How can I fully commit to making a real go of this when my mind is filled with daydreams of suddenly someone who is more of a catch wanting to be with me? [more inside]

Our house is in sad state of disrepair. We'd fix it if we could, but we don't own it. We'd be persistent with the "landlords" but, we don't pay rent or bills. How do I tell them in a forceful, but considerate way that the house needs to be fixed? [more inside]

I'm interested in printing a few of my wife's digital photographs as a gift to her. I don't know a thing about photography (my wife is the expert), so I'm looking for some advice. Here's some details: I have the original hi-res versions (she uses a Nikon D70, so I think the files are large jpegs). I'm interested in pretty large prints - probably around 24" x 18". I'm not too concerned about cost - my priorities are the highest possible quality, and longevity. Ideally, I'd love to use someone local (Boston, MA). Can anyone recommend a printer? What specifically should I ask for? (Types of printing, types of paper, etc.). Many thanks in advance!
Need a wine recommendation to give as a gift. Caveats: must be $10-15 price range, must be obtainable at the PA state-run liquor stores. I do not drink wine, so use small words. [more inside]

I'm familiar with Vegas--I just want New Year's Eve specific advice. Thanks!

We are staying in condos right on the beach and I want to pack comfortable clothes/shoes but still look good. What besides swimsuits and cover-ups and hat should I take? What shoes? I have Keen water sandals but they do fill up with sand on the beach and are probably mainly for river shoes when you need to walk on rocks. I also have black teva flip flops. Not the most flattering at all! We will be snorkeling, reading on the beach, walking, sightseeing going to restaurants, playing with young nieces and nephews. Thank you!

I just told a petty lie to two people to save face just because I didn't have the moral courage to admit it. And, I feel like a hypocrite and terrible for not having enough integrity to admit it. It was something as simple as having misplaced something, looking for it and realizing that it was I who misplaced it in the first place. And unbelievable as it sounds, I do my best not to lie to anyone. How do I get over it? Have you lied like this before?

But there are catches... 1) We just bought our house, and don't have a stove yet; we have a Crock Pot, a toaster oven, and a microwave. So no meat browning or onion sauteing. 2) The meal must be wheat- and gluten-free. 3) No seafood. We've had pretty limited success with the slow-cooker... recipes sound delicious, but end up tasting like a whole lotta nothin.

I'm generally a pretty nervous person. Lately (over the last two months), it's become worse. I jump whenever someone enters the room. I'm quite stressed about everyday things (a disagreement, a social event, my future), and nearly every day my stomach or chest or shoulders ache from these worries. I'm looking for a quote... But I only remember the gist of the meaning, not the quote nor the person who said it nor the context. Yay, mystery! From what I can remember, the gist of the quote is that intelligent people aren't afraid of having a dialogue with others who have different beliefs because their minds and own beliefs aren't so pathetic that mere conversation would break them so easily. There may be another part of the quote that has to do with understanding among people, but I'm not sure. Anyway, this is a very long shot, but here's hoping that someone out there knows what the heck I'm talking about.

Is there a way to figure out how many stitches I should cast on in order to make this yarn last until the scarf is 60" long? I don't care how wide it is.

What's the easiest way to do this? (I'm using Inform 7, but would be happy to use something else if needed.)
