How can I cultivate / find deeper conversations with people? In university it was always easy to find people ready to talk about philosophy, politics, psychology, etc. But now, as I have gotten older and supplanted myself into the corporate world, the art of conversation seems to have been lost. It would appear that most people are resigned to talking about kids, jobs, and pop culture. Am I just in the wrong social circles or does this type of small talk permeate our culture? I long to attend a French salon or dinner party whose primary purpose is the art of conversation. Where can I find groups of people who like engaging, face-to-face conversation? How can I steer people away from talking about what they saw on CNN and towards something with a little more substance?

Apparently the rest of his family all have normal toes. Trying to remember an animated film from late 70s, early 80s. I saw it in 5th grade classroom 1983. All I can remember is a musical song sequence where kids are in a forest (or bog) and are being chased/haunted by the spirits of the forest (or maybe one particular spirit?) the song is catchy and I think the chorus has the word "Who?" sung as if it was the sound a ghost makes. I think the movie might have had a slight pro-environment message as well.

I just managed to screw up the lens on my Canon D400 and was hoping someone could give me some advice on how much it is likely to cost to fix? Basically, the focus seems to be slightly twisted and appears to come off it's 'thread'. I can turn the lens to focus but the action is stiff and jams rather than pulling the lens back towards the camera. Obviously, I am no expert, but is it likely that the lens can be fixed, or am I looking at throwing down money that I don't have on buying a new one? Thanks in advance!

I was recently given a print. It was one of at least a handful identical copies made in 1972 by a student. There's a blowup of a part of it here. Knowing nearly nothing about art, I'm very curious to learn how was this made. The hatching & stippling scream computer to me, but that seems unlikely, given the time. It kind of spins out of control and he threatens to go fight the man? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm 6 feet tall, solidly built, in my early twenties, and I have an ankle-length black leather trenchcoat. It's swishy and sleek, with a button closure (no belt), like this one (it may be the same coat). I got this coat after pining for it in high school for years, and went through a wearing-black Matrix phase with sunglasses and the whole deal. Now I have a girlfriend and some perspective, and I'm more likely to wear pullover sweaters. [more inside]
Is this piece of music, used in the film 'Forget Paris', just incidental music or a well known piece of jazz? If it is well known, what is it? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=O29IITBox2c (starts around 2:53) [mild expletive warning for the clip] I bought the soundtrack, composed by Marc Shaiman, and it's not on there.

I'm developing an e-commerce project with business processes that are truly unique and might be patentable. I understand there is serious debate about the benefit and/or validity of many patents in this field, but I think my idea stands up to the bullshit test, and I don't think protecting it would be anti-competitive.
So, should I launch and go about protecting the invention later, or should I hire a patent attorney right away? I've searched the patent databases myself and found nothing remotely similar. But I'm not an expert.

Unfortunately, he plugged it in to the mains with just a plug converter, and since we're in Australia (240V) instead of the US, where the Moog came from (120V or something) - boom. Can we fix this? Would that be a horrible nightmare?

I've been sleeping on a cheap Ikea mattress for a few years now and have finally decided to invest in a better one. I like the Tempur-Pedic beds, but I haven't really looked into them due to the high prices (I need a Queen). I recently came across these Bergad Isoform Mattresses while researching online and found quite a few good reviews on epinions. I'm a bit worried about having to purchase one without being able to test it, though I hear they are quite comparable to the Tempur-Pedics. What are your thoughts? As an aside, I have a genuine curiosity about how these beds are for sex. I'm used to spring mattress beds which seem to be more buoyant than the foam beds, and I'm curious if that affects sex in any way. I don't mean to be crass, but it IS hard to find reviews on that other thing people do in their beds!

Is it true that it is good for a car to fill it up with higher grade gas once in a while? I usually fill up at Shell, and there is 87, 89 and 91 kinds of gas, with 87 being the cheapeast and 91 being the most expensive. I usually get 87. However, I heard that if you own a car and want it to last longer, it is beneficial to fill it up with the most expensive gas, to "clean the engine". Is that true? If so, what is the explanation behind it? I drive a 2002 Kia Rio, if that makes any difference.
What is this device (180KB jpg)? My dad has had it for years but doesn't know what it's purpose is. It has a jaw that opens (103KB) and a scale (67KB) that reads up to 72, labeled every six divisions, and closes with an odd spring. I don't think that's in degrees since the jaw does not open that wide. It's obviously for measuring something but what that something is we can't figure out. My brother's idea was something involving maps. It is made of steel except for the brass scale.

When the character reaches the ring she starts walking around it, up the wall. Obviously the camera is linked to that far rotating ring, but the transition between the near corridor and the far ring is absolutely seamless. [more inside]

I just started a paralegal job where my main task is to sort through boxes and boxes of documents. (Yay fun!) I know that I'm less likely to get papercuts if I keep my hands moisturized, so I brought in a bottle of lubriderm, but it doesn't seem to be quite doing the trick. My next move is to get a very very thick lotion, like perhaps the L'Occitane hand cream that everyone raves about. I've also read reviews of this "gloves in a bottle" lotion that excema-sufferers use. Does anyone have any experience with this type of lotion and its effectiveness for preventing papercuts? Any other recommendations for lotions or creams? If anyone has any tips on how to get the cuts to heal faster once I've been bitten, I'd love to hear it too! Thanks!

Hello MeFi peoples, I am trying to find the tool or tools to run my sustainable business consulting practice, which I started in August, and I've been going a bit nuts with too many choices. How to force revolting neighbors to vent their apartment into the outdoors rather than the building, or force the landlord to clean the air up somehow?
Renting in Baltimore, my lease expired a year ago and I am month to month. The things that live on the first floor do not work or leave their apartment but spend all day every day smoking cheap, foul tobacco. The smoke fills the stairwell and rises to the third floor and enters my apartment. It is revolting. I've written a formal complaint to the landlord once. Do I have any legal rights in this? I find the smell sickening, it gives me headaches, sinus problems, and watery eyes and I can't block it, the building is so old it creeps in no matter what I do, I've even taped the door shut. Which mostly works except that I do work during the day and can't tape it shut every morning. Besides, that's insane. For my second complaint I'd like some precedent or legal argument. If I could afford to move I'd be gone in a flash but I am penniless. [more inside]

Bachelor party in Playa De Carmen Mexico. Where should we stay? We would prefer a hotel that has all the amenities including pool, good food, beach, comfortable beds and nice showers.
We are looking at the idea of using a flat-panel TV in our new conference room at work in lieu of a projector. The advantages of this would be that A) we could keep our existing lighting system, and B) it would look classier. Are there disadvantages to a setup this? Problems? Gotchas? Most movies released lately are bad, unoriginal, trying to be good but failing at it, remakes of good movies, etc, etc. Look at the list of movies I really like, and suggest me some good movies in similar genre. I like many different types of movies but I don't like purely romantic movies or movies that are too slow paced. I don't like movies dealing with war or combat (action is very ok). The below list is not all the movies I've ever seen, it's just a selection of the movies I enjoy the most. They don't have to be older movies, as long as they are quality movies. Thanks!
