Obscure-Movie-Filter?:
Setting: post apocalyptic (I think)
Plot: Can't remember
Starring: Can't remember
Unique subplot (or possibly main plot): One character (20s-30's white male) has a torn postcard of Waikiki Beach, however the "Wa" is torn, so he thinks it's called "ikiki Beach", a paradise to which he can escape to once the madness of the current plot of the movie resolves.

In the U.S., we get all caught up in the decisions that adult women make and the consequences of those decisions. (To have children, not to have children, to work, to stay home with the children, not to work, to marry, to have children without marrying, etc.) Are there similar convulsions about these cultural issues in other countries, especially non-English speaking ones? How can I learn about them? I'm curious both about how women's roles in in their societies are changing and about how those societies are reacting to the changes.

How do I keep time with a click track? I've played in a band, and I can keep time with other people both live and when recording. But when I'm recording solo, I can't seem to keep time with the click track without slowing down the song and/or losing all the feeling of the music. So I mostly do only one-track recordings even though I have the technical capability to do more. Indie musicians, how do you do it?

The other two choices appear to be Hostal de la Noria and ...the Holiday Inn (which surprisingly has some good reviews but the photos look like every other Holiday Inn in the world) We'll be there late Jan.-earlly Feb.

I have been given a set of WW1 officer training manuals. Some of them are in booklets, some are stapled packets and some are loose. I want to scan them to a CD so that they can be shared and read without handling the originals. I would like to scan them without bending or creasing the booklets and bundled paper. I have both a regular Canon Canoscan 8400 flatbed and an HP 4670 see through scanner ($38 on clearance at the local Staples.) Is there a way of scanning this material without damage? Any good discussion groups out there where WW1 memorabilia is discussed?
I also found a box of glass plate negatives from a photographer that was operating in St Albans VT in the latter 19th century. I would like to scan them. Can either of these scanners be used or modified for large negative scanning? If I could find a pinout diagram for the Canoscan film scanner cable, I might be able to build a light source for large negatives.

It's part of a Movable Type install with tons of posts, comments, and log entries, and it's always run smoothly before. The problem is that it'll bomb on random queries, seemingly every minute or two, since status queries always show uptime in tens of seconds. Repairing the larger tables and restarting the server has done nothing, and no major changes have been made. What's wrong? Is this a *nix issue, a MySQL issue, or an MT issue? And how do I go about telling the difference, or fixing any of them?

I'm trying to find a book that I read when I was in grade school, sometime during the mid to late 80's. The basic plot involved a girl scaring her impressionable young step(?) brother by pretending to go into trances and make predictions. IIRC, she was somewhat of an outcast at school, but had recently been cast in the school play as a colonial witch (Tituba perhaps?). I think there may have also been some references in the book to the Sybills of ancient Greece (hence the trances). Is this ringing any bells?

A good majority of the non-fiction books I read are littered with relevant quips, quotes, and interesting anecdotes. An author may start a chapter with a very succinct quote that beautifully summarizes the theme of the chapter, or during the course of explaining a theory, the writer will include a great historical anecdote to reinforce his opinion. Where does all of this wonderful stuff come from? Are non-fiction authors complete bibliomaniacs armed with photographic memories, or is this stuff added through the editorial process? Is there such a thing as a 'aphorism researcher' or a 'andecdote index'?

In 2001, my .com finally imploded in the week after September 11th, when our few remaining clients went out of business. For another couple of years the corporation continued to exist, with me as sole employee, though it was only an after-hours interest -- I've long since moved on from doing anything with this corporation. It's existed only on paper for the past two years while I've paid the IRS, out of my own pocket, some payroll taxes (941 withholdings) that my accounting errors led me to underpay. They (and I) have just noticed that I forgot to file for the Q3 2001. It seems that I paid $6,000 to employees in that final quarter, so I figure my business owes the IRS another couple of thousand dollars in taxes.
Now what? I don't have a couple of thousand dollars to throw at this, and the corporation's bank account is all but empty. Can I bargain with the IRS? Will they give me any bonus points for coming forward and telling them about this? Is my moral obligation to personally pay this debt sufficient that I should just buck up and set up a payment plan? What happens if, worst case, I just shut down the corporation?

My mother went to the emergency hospital last year and was billed a hefty amount. She was covered with health insurance from her company (Destiny) and the hospital was "in-network". The insurance company paid the hospital fee (which was the larger amount) but only paid about half the physician fee because the physician was "out-of-network". My mother asked whether or not the physician was in-network or out-of-network when she was in the hospital and the nurse just told her not to worry about it. My questions are, 'How can a hospital be in-network and fully covered but assign her an out-of-network physician which won't be fully covered under the insurance?' and 'Is there anything she can do about this? I don't think it's fair she has to pay for something she didn't have a choice in'.

I'm sure somebody else who's travelling over Thanksgiving could also benefit from this knowledge. I brought my cell phone with me on my five-day trip to my parents' place, but of
course I forgot the charger. The question I ask is: 'tis nobler to leave the phone on continuously and hope the battery pulls through, or is it a better idea to turn the phone off every night and turn it on only at the point in the day when I plan to use it? Does powering off and on drain more battery power than idling / the cell phone equivalent of "sleep"? FWIW, I have a relatively new Nokia 6682, and the battery is currently showing a full charge but I suspect it's lying, as I think it's been at least 24 hours since I charged it (that said, this battery's done five days unplugged before).

How can I prevent iPhoto from auto-launching when I plug in a card reader?
When I plug in a card reader, iPhoto assumes that it is being summoned and auto-magically launches itself. I don't want this to happen. I don't want iPhoto to ever launch without my permission, which I might grant once a year or so. Yet, every day I have to cope with it launching multiple times as I attempt to transfer photos to my hard drive. It is a minor annoyance, true, but it is an annoyance.
My question, then, is how can I make iPhoto stop doing this? I've searched its settings high-and-low, but to no avail. I've searched the System Preferences high-and-low, but to no avail. There must be something I'm missing.

Not long ago I was reading a tech company's "About Us" page on their web site and was unduly impressed at how well-written it was. It seemed to me the perfect combination of hilarious and informative. I made a mental note to consult it when writing a similar page for a new service my company is launching. Of course, I have forgotten the company. I just remember how good the copy was...ring any bells?

I own a treo 650, how do I find out if it's unlocked. I looked in the battery compartment and could not find a sim card. Does this mean anything? My carrier is Cingular and I somehow do not have a contract and my rates are competitive. The reason I am asking is an upgrade is available for the phone and I want to know which one to install.

Bought 3 pairs and now they're looking a bit ratty. I'm desperate to replace them. Size 45. Any idea where I might find new ones? I tried Skechers via their web site and they were no help at all. Also tried My feet and I will be eternally grateful.

How would we go about getting started with this venture.

Defining characteristics?
It had a number of clever author/poet biographies, most of which I can remember were in the Byron Shelley Keats vein/era, and each of the authors' names had a made-up nickname inserted in the middle. As in... "William Butler 'Ghostie' Yeats" or somesuch. Also, there was a very nice glossary of musical piece definitions, most of which were words I was previously unfamiliar with.

How do I swap the control and command keys on a mac? Since I use a PC from the very same keyboard, I'm constantly flubbing up my copy and pastes between OSes. I'd like to just stick with one, and control-c feels more natural. I've tried the Keyboard system preferences pane. I've changed the Modifier Keys settings to swap them, but it doesn't do anything. Do I need to run an app to swap these keystrokes?

I'm pregnant. Joy! My husband and I live in a small apartment and have brainstormed many ways to make more space for the required baby paraphernalia, and the play space the baby will eventually require. But I wonder, is there a polite way to ask well-meaning friends and family to please not give us a lot of big, plastic clutter which will quickly eat up this hard-found space?

Like many people, I have a "best of" directory on my web site where I keep various files I find on the net that I want to keep around in case the original host goes away. Right now it's just a
raw directory of files, mostly with their original often cryptic filenames. I'd like some kind of drop-in file manager that would let me easily add descriptions and tags. Users could click on tags to narrow the listing to, say, just "flash toys" or "zero wing spinoffs".

I have been desperately seeking those Microsoft Office XP Flash animations featuring the voice of Gilbert Gottfried that proclaimed the "Death of Clippy." (Or maybe it was just the Pink-Slipping of Clippy.) Are those still around anywhere on this crazy Internet?

Many years ago someone told me the recognised term for the kind of involuntary shudder that commonly affects people at rest. You know the kind that spontaneously rocks you, just for a moment, like you are shaking off the ghoulies, like the cliche says 'someone was walking on your grave'? I have since lost this word to time, and searching
the internet has brought only partial results.
Does anyone know it?

OK, so I discovered the CBC radio show "The Great Eastern" via MeFi. They had a great site that archived show scripts, full MP3s, offshoot fan projects and many other bits of content that helped create an alternate universe. My question? The site (http://www.schooner.ce.mun.ca:8080/great/) is no longer available and I feel like I've lost a goofball interweb friend. Anyone know what happened? Related: Anyone know what Paul Moth is up to?

I'm looking for weed-related songs to listen to. I'm thinking along the lines of Ben Harper's "Burn One Down", Tom Petty's "Last Dance With Maryjane" or Sublime's "Smoke Two Joints". Try to stick to chillin', rock-type songs as opposed to Hip Hop (but if you've got a Hip Hop one that you love feel free to add it to the list). Thanks in advance!

I get itchy and stinging legs (no hives) when I jog for 15 minutes (indoor or outdoor, hot or cold weather) and when I hike in cold weathers. When I stop walking or jogging, while I am still outside, it disappears after a while.
Any contact to my skin during this period, triggers the itching and stinging. I tried to wear different fabrics, from cotton to microfibres, and applied mosturizing lotions, nothing worked. I had allergy test that is clean. I don’t know if any relation to this but most of the times my legs are cooler than my rest of body, even in indoor.
Any body has an idea what is this?

How can I jump in a pool without holding my nose? I'm an ok swimmer, but I've kept a bad habit since childhood of holding my nose whenever I go underwater. If I really concentrate, I can do it without, but very often I end up quickly blowing out all my air (through my nose), or worse actually inhaling some water. I know this is just psychological, but I find it quite hard to do all the time. Any tips/hints on this one?

What is the real difference between psychology and sociology? Does a concise and thorough explanation exist anywhere? I'm thinking particularly in terms of social interactions and The Self. Both seem to be viable topics in both sociology and psychology. I perceive a lot of overlap between the two disciplines. Am I wrong? Do sociologists and psychologist agree with me?

Tomorrow I'm giving a lecture about color -- specifically, I'm talking to designers about how to create color palettes. The talk is more concerned with aesthetics (i.e. what color combinations are striking) than tools (i.e. how to pick colors in Photoshop). But there will be some tools talk. Since there are many designers here, I'd love to know all your color-related tips. As the Xmas season is coming, I am sharing one of my own tips inside...

Last week, my sister (34 years old, very active and in good health) suddenly developed complete numbness in her legs and arms that completely incapacitated her within 24 hours. After a few harrowing days in the hospital during which more and more things were ruled out, today the definitive diagnosis is
Transverse Myelitis.
I had never heard of this before; does anyone have any experience (direct or indirect; family or friend) with the disease? Thanks in advance for any stories or indications of what we can expect.

Several years ago, I got a bunch of mixtapes at a musicologist friend's moving sale. One was a mix tape of Zulu jazz/jive (think along the lines of Shanachie's Indestructible Beat of Soweto/Soweto Never Sleeps). There was no track listing--in fact, I think the tape was just titled "township music." Help me identify one of its tracks!

My question is two part:
Employers and HR people (or anyone else with input): You have received resumes from potential hires. All the resumes are standard with Education, Experience, Skills, etc. What are some of the things you wished you knew about the applicant before calling them for an interview? I'm not talking about questions like "Tell me more about your education." I'm asking about the questions that the resume creates in your head that aren't necessarily specific to the resume. Perhaps these are questions that traditional resumes don't cover. Interview are very costly in terms of time. I guess these are the type of questions that if you saw them spelled out on a resume you would have been even more or less interested in interviewing them.
Everyone else: If you were applying for a job, what would you want to know before applying that the ad would have left out? I'm not looking for answers like wages. I mean deeper things that go through your mind when applying.
Hopefully these questions aren't to vague, I am just looking at this to hopefully be a better hiring guru. Thank for your answers!

Many years ago I was given a box of odd DOS software on 5 1/4 disks. One of them had a Star Treck game whose object was for the player to assume the role of captain Kirk and issue commands to the crew members in the correct star Treck manner. While I had enjoyed the show, I was not familiar enough with the program to play the part of Kirk. Just to see what would happen, I told Spock to go do an anatomical impossibility and was immediately relieved of command and placed in the brig. The disk has been lost. What was this game and where can I get a working copy?

I loved
Hotel Rwanda. What particularly hooked me was the film's unflinching realism in showing civilization as it is slowly being encroached and oppressed by large-scale terrorism which casts a shadow of uncertainty and danger on even the most mundane routines of daily life -- a sort of real-life
Night of the Living Dead. Other similar films are
Salvador,
Missing and
The Killing Fields. I also enjoyed the recent
The Constant Gardener. What else will I like?

Anyone have experience with an online seller of such accessories, and/or installing them into Ikea cabinets? Local cabinet resellers charge too much. Bonus points if products are manufactured sustainably.
