I'm a straight 29-year old male, who for various reasons has never dated and now is trying to get started. The problem is that I never learned how to flirt, and I'm totally clueless about how to either generate interest or recognize interest in others. What's worse, the standard "Martian's guides to dating" are almost useless to me because my primary social activities are forms of partner dancing, in which the norms of physical contact are different enough that I can't use the standard signals to judge someone's interest. So, what can I do to attract the ladies or notice when they're attracted to me?

Should I buy a new computer now, or will I just kick myself in six months because it will be cheaper? I am contemplating buying the iMac, but the cost of getting 16GB of RAM upgrade adds about a grand to the total price. I really want to have a lot of speed. Is it likely for the price to go down much in the next 6 months? If so, will it be substantial (worth putting off the instant gratification), or will it be insignificant as a % of the total price? Thank you for helping me make this decision. (As a side note, does anyone know of a good PC that is comparable to the iMac? I couldn't find one that had a solid state HD) Thanks again!

I really hope people don't see this as me promoting myself; I really need shared experience and advice about how to market myself. I am on some business forums but they tend to promote just themselves as THE place to market yourself - there must be more...
So, I run a proofreading/copyediting/copywriting/transcribing business. Doing OK as I launched while working full time at a day job. Now looking to transition out of the day job, a step at a time, so I can spend that time on the business. Eventual aim: work a 40 hour week just on the business, at home, for myself.
But the day job might require me to drop 2.5 days a week rather than the 1 I can really cope with. So I need to up my marketing to drive some business my way. Any solutions you've used that really work? e.g. there is a consensus that Yellow Pages/Yell is not worth the fee. Also I work with US and UK clients, though UK based - any hints for reaching more US people?

As a handmade gift for some folks who met in World of Warcraft, fell in love, and got married, I would like to use an image that says both A) Love, and B) WoW. I found info on Love Tokens and "
Love is in the Air" items (and a pretty badass-looking plaque), but I don't play the game, so I worry that an item that visually seems to say "Love" may also have deleterious side-effects or something. I like the non-obviousness of the
Lovely Charm Collector's Kit, but again, I'm way over my head. WoW players, what think you?

I need to build a short-ish (maybe 15' or so?) pneumatic tube system between two large (12") clear globes powered by a leaf blower. I have the globes, and the blower is being sourced, but now I need the tubes themselves. I'm looking for clear plastic tubing around 3" in diameter (though I'm flexible) that comes in both straight and curved segments. Cheap is good! Also, I'm in the Chicago area, but I can drive to pick up the items as this is somewhat time sensitive. Any suggestions for vendors that might have such odd items would be greatly appreciated
TIA!

I found
this framed vintage image of a lightly dressed woman at an antique store in southern Colorado. Disassembling the frame, I noticed that the image seems to have been printed on paperboard, and it may be one portion trimmed from a larger poster. It's a monochrome image with limited use of color -- the yellow of her garments, the pink of her cheeks, the light blue cast to the background. TinEye was not helpful. I am hoping some MeFite who recognizes the woman or the image can tell me who she is or where the picture comes from. Failing that, some general guesses on the pictureās vintage or provenance would be welcome.

I just bought
this pin on Etsy (
side and
back view). It was listed by a Latvian seller who says it's a vintage Soviet-era item. This pin must have been a mass-produced item, since I saw one exactly like it on Etsy last spring, though someone else beat me to the purchase that time. I'm intrigued by the image of swans seemingly menacing a woman and her child, and I wonder if it perhaps references a Slavic folktale. A friend has suggested that it might be a
Swan Lake reference, though to my mind it doesn't suit the narrative. Your thoughts and best guesses?

ObscureParodySongFilter: Searching for a parody of the Destiny's Child song "Bills, Bills, Bills" - only it was "Ribs, Ribs, Ribs." Sung by males extolling the virtues of a woman that could prepare great barbecue. The song was played in the late 90s on the radio in the Tampa, Florida area. I'd love to hear it again and my google-fu is failing me.

Are there any good, preferably free, widgets that I can use to build a family tree and put it on my blog? Ideally I would like a widget that has some sort of database behind it, and I would link to a database record for a specific ancestor when I write about them . It would also be cool to show an attractive family tree as a navigational tool to go to old blog posts about specific ancestors. You could click links in the genealogy widget to posts about all of the stories that are tagged "great grandpa Joe," for example.

Does anyone know whether lavender essential oil can be used as a deterrent for woodworm? I believe it is effective against clothes moths and wondered whether it might also work for the moths of woodworm.
It would be very expensive to cover an area with neat oil, but perhaps it could be diluted in a carrier oil. Thanks for any thoughts.

we were using quickbooks online. we got switched without warning or explanation to paycycle a couple of weeks ago. paycycle seeks simplicity but lacks critical functionality for a medium size business. we need a service targetted to medium-size businesses.

I'd like to have an RSS feed for Bloomberg News, specifically for their
environment reporting, that I can put into Google Reader. The problem is, Bloomberg News
discontinued RSS feeds in 2006. None of the workarounds I've found are satisfactory:
This one, for example, tries to use Google News, but it wouldn't really work for my purposes. (Using
"environment" site:bloomberg.com as my search string wouldn't necessarily return all news items related to the environment -- a story just about renewable energy, for example, not its environmental benefits, wouldn't show up at all.) There's also
Feedity, but they want you to pay to have feeds with any sort of functionality, which I'd rather not do if I don't have to.
Page2RSS is closer to the mark, but the output is messy (multiple stories in the same feed item). Businessweek.com, which is owned by Bloomberg News, offers RSS feeds with Bloomberg News, but they don't allow for narrowing down on just the environment reporting. Is there a solution out there that's better?

Their pricing policy is very expensive and only seems to make a token effort to reach out to low-income people like myself. They've expressed interest in meeting and getting to know us -- I'm excited about this, but am also really personally affronted by their pricing scheme. How do I get over this so we can have a conversation?

I vaguely remember an editorial cartoon or maybe a Doonesbury Sunday strip or maybe even a political ad that used a childlike crayon drawing of a missile hitting a magical bubble-like shield to illustrate the ridiculousness of Ronald Reagan's dream of the "Star Wars" Strategic Defense Initiative. It might have been a short animated film. But I cannot find this 1980s-era image online; can you?

In a technical context, a particular variable's value can have four values. One of those values is described in the French source as 'largement dƩcrit'. It relates to whether an adverse reaction to a drug is described much in the literature. The question is: does it mean 'widely described' (many journals touch upon it), or 'broadly described' (maybe only one journal describes it, but in broad detail)? Or is the phrase totally ambiguous? I have to provide the best translation in international English for a computer program in this specific context. The only translations of these documents that exist don't agree. The phrase rarely occurs in context, but mostly in tables of values.

"American Thanksgiving" in Melbourne, Australia -- for a few Americans and a bunch of new Aussie friends who have never celebrated, but want to help with the cooking. How should I use the next few days to prepare?
A few of the difficulties: I've never hosted Thanksgiving before, in ANY country. I'm not sure how to best coordinate the pot-luck aspect -- trying to shape a decent team-effort menu would be wise. I'm not even sure where the best place is to buy a turkey.
Bonus points for menu suggestions that add Aussie flair to the American holiday (let's put kangaroo in SOMETHING), or that go over-the-top American (who says we can't have turkey AND bacon cheeseburgers?).

I have a Mac Book Pro 17inch..I have had it for about 2.5 years. The logic board had to be replaced around 3 months ago. Fortunately, apple fixed it gratis, since this model had "known issues" and it was handled under warranty even though it was out of warranty.
It has worked fine since then, no problems whatsoever, until this morning when I tried to wake the computer --the screen was crazy looking and the cursor was frozen. Super horrifying since I haven't backed up in 3 weeks (I am a typical 60 year old user). I restarted and everything seemed ok except when I went to blogger (as a typical 60 year old, I maintain a blog)...there was an error message that cookies were disabled. HMMM. I got to the blog by googling myself and things seemed ok.

What is different, in terms of the stitching or the weave & so forth, between a $50 Gap shirt and a $400 italian shirt? Between cheap blue jeans and couture jeans? How would a knowledgeable person be able to look at an item of clothing and immediately be able to tell that it is very well-made? I'm aware that some (most?) of the markup in price comes from buying a brand name, or the fact that the design is compelling. I'm not interested in that; what I'm interested in are the differences in construction, differences that are objective rather than subjective. Also, pointers to websites with helpful pictures would be greatly appreciated.

We're going to have him tested at a local university and are worried how he's going to take it. At times he's convinced he can't read and this might just add to that. Have any parents come up with a way to somehow portray this in a positive light? I'm thinking about trying to tell him this process will help my wife and I better help him... trying to put it on us. Not sure if that will fly. In the end I think this will be a good thing, just trying to soften it up a little.

How do we "parent" a 16 year old girl?
My family is taking in a 16 year old girl to be a new member of our family. She's an amazing young woman in a tough situation. No behavior or academic issues (I taught her in 8th grade, she babysits for us regularly), some emotional issues (most likely due to her environment). We're going to go through the process of temporary custody, so this is not a question about "the system" or "legality". This is a question of family dynamics. We have other children in the house who are super excited as well, but our oldest is 7 and we have no idea how to come up with rules, routines, and boundaries for a 16 year old.
Of course we'll have to come up with what will work for us, but what kind of things should we be thinking about? We're already talking about curfew, bedtime!!!!?????, computer use, etc. What should we be thinking about that we might not be.
Any help from those with teens or those who have adopted older kids would be appreciated.

I'm going to be flying next month, and I'm already annoyed/upset, etc... about the pornoscanners and groping issue, but I'm even more nervous now due to one article I read and am wondering if I'm misunderstanding the groping issue and it is actually WORSE than I already believe it to be: Is the "enhanced patdown" an actual under/inside the clothes grabbing of genitals? I can't find a clear statement on the TSA site (great PR, not so great information architecture) and one blog explicitly detailed the touching of her labia but other blog posts I've seen can be read either way (as underclothes contact or overclothes, they're not particularly clear). Help???

Im looking for some advice and suggestions on the best way to structure a project.
My client has 4 products (SAS) and although they are related most people would only use one due to the specialist nature of each.
Currently only one of these products has a website and there is no main company website.
They are looking to introduce a main company website either incorporating each of the 4 products within it or having a separate company site and each product has its own separate site with the main company site acting as a knowledge base to establish them as an authority in field they work in.
Im wondering what the best approach would be from a usability point of view and an SEO points of view? I guess from an SEO point of view each product sitting on its own domain and being targeted to certain keyphrases might be more preferential than one site will all the content in?
Im wondering if anyone knows of any examples out there that handle this particularly well

Recently aded an external drive to my iMac for storage of photo files. It runs off a Firewire 800 port. I also use a Time Capsule.
The external drive is mounted overnight via crontab for the daily backup run. When that's done, a script unmounts the drive. This works reliably. The drive, then, should be unmounted the rest of the time.
However, the drive is mounted at unexpected and sporadic intervals. The logs reveal that this is usually, but not always, immediately following the unmounting of the Time Capsule after an hourly run. Not on every run, but perhaps on one run per day. In addition, the external drive is sometimes mounted in a way that appears to have no association with the Time Capsule.

We have an 800 number that forwards to the on-call engineer's cell phone (rotated weekly semi-predictably) and has a centralized voicemail for missed calls. Unfortunately, our current service is a pain to configure and only supports a maximum of 10 forwarding numbers. Would I be putting myself at risk, legally, were I to knit elected officials in jest and sell them on Etsy? I wouldn't be doing anything distasteful or slandering, but merely making stuffed figurines of them, no more offensive than your typical political cartoon's caricature. I know there is a ton of Obama, Bush, Palin and Clinton merchandise out there that doesn't get much legal attention, but I'm thinking about also knitting famous governors and representatives, and perhaps former elected officials as well. Failing that, what about selling or giving away the patterns for free? I'm more interested in doing this as a design project than making a profit, but I'd like to sell them both to subsidize the hobby, and let people who want a plushie have one.

A friend of mine has an old vintage phone the same as
this one here. My limited knowledge leads me to believe that because it was an old analogue phone there is no chance of getting it working again in it's current form. It's in very good condition and we were thinking if it was possible to take the "guts" out of a cheap new phone and put them inside the handset part of the old phone. We only really want to use it for novelty value but neither of us really have a clue how we would match up the keys/screen/antenna or even how to open up the older handset as there are no obvious screws to undo. If anyone could shed any light on if this is possible & how to do it we would very much appreciate it.

November 15
I want to make this short and excuse my uneasy temperment.
I'm in Korea teaching English. Teaching for almost a month to be exact. No background in teaching nor attending a seminar for ESL teaching. It's very hard since I'm doing this in the middle of the last school semester.
I don't know what to do to be honest. I speak Korean and this is a menace. They have huge expectations about me as I can speak both languages.
I need to improve my teaching skills overall
ASAP. But what to do?

Should I tell my professor that I'm pretty sure he gave me an incorrect reference, which cost me a good deal of preparation time on an assignment, or is this the kind of thing I'm expected to be able to deal with easily?

I just caught the documentary
Dig! and though I'm pretty familiar with the Dandy Warhols, I've never really gotten into the Brian Jonestown Massacre. So, what's a good introduction to BJM that will keep me coming back for more?

Help me make sense of no-fault state car insurance shenanigans! Covered person's insurance company not really proactive or informative. Other driver's insurance company dragging heels and giving the run-around..

Well, it's time I admit it. I'm a hypochondriac, have been for a long time, and it's finally starting to affect my life, finances, and relationships with friends and family. How do I deal with this?

What are some of the most difficult songs to sing? I love to sing (especially in the car) and would like to refine my vocal technique. I can't afford vocal lessons, so I'm looking for challenging songs that will give me a great vocal work out.

What's currently the best plug-in (paid or free) for setting up/moderating a membership-based level to an already existing web site? I'm not a programmer, so preferably something that's relatively easy to set up, looks good to the eye, is easy to navigate and offers nice customizing options. I'm using Wordpress right now, so one that works with wp would be *most* awesome. Oh, and I'm on a Mac. Thanks!!! :)

Will the Battlestar Galactica boardgame (no expansions) still work OK with seven people? I have a clued-up bunch of tastefully nerdy friends who've never played it before, but there are seven of us (the game says it's for '3-6').
Will this present problems? Are there any rules hacks we should introduce?
