Probably about 5 years ago my friends and I were going on a hiking trip up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire we stopped on the way up in what my dad says was Rochester, New Hampshire and ate breakfast at a little restaurant called Froggers. It was called Froggers because everything was covered in different types of frogs, from dolls to wooden statues to toy frogs, anything frog related you can think of. Does anybody from that area remember that restaurant or have any information? It might not have been the right town
I'm trying to get the local webcam to stream to the stage on Flash CS3 actionscript3. When I run it, I get a blank screen and no errors. Any help at all would be appreciated. Here is my code so far: import flash.system.SecurityPanel; Security.showSettings(SecurityPanel.CAMERA); var cam:Camera = Camera.getCamera(name); var vid:Video = new Video(); vid.attachCamera(cam); stage.addChild(vid); Thanks! I'm a coder, with skills in python, ruby, rails, java, etc. I've recently started getting offers for (and accepting) short-term contract work in addition to my longer-term dayjob contract. However, I'm unsure what the going rate is for the work I do - how much should I charge on a per-hourly basis? How does this vary with respect to the length of the contract (eg, a day, a week, a month, six months)? [more inside]

I've been using FeedDigest to convert and embed an RSS feed into an HTML page, and love the simplicity of it and the ability to customize the look of the embedded results. I don't love, though, FeedDigest's slowness in updating the feed content, or that I'm relying on a third-party to middleman the content onto the page. Is something dead simple, be it code in the page, or on the server, a Flash app, etc., that I could replace FeedDigest with? [more inside]

At the height of the "earn money viewing ads" craze there was a (PC-only) program that hacked the VGA driver, in Windows I think, to add a few extra lines in which to display ads. This would still give you, say, 640x480 for normal stuff with 20 or so lines added for an ad bar that went across the top or bottom of the screen. Does anyone have any pointers to information about it that survives on the Web?

There's a great magazine style Wordpress theme called "Gridlock" which allows for some cool tricks, but appears to be limited in terms of changes. First take a peek at the theme. And the download page. It has a large spot at the top for the newest article, and then below this, side by side, are the next two most recent entries. The problem is there doesn't seem a way to another row for more posts. The designer explains the reason he doesn't want to make this an option is because he likes it the way it is - however, it is open source, so he encourages others to tweak it. Any coders out there up to the challenge to figure this out? The other major request is finding a way to make this theme centered on the page... although I've read of some workarounds online already.
I will be traveling to the bay area, San Jose, in December. I am also an amateur radio operator. I have a list of open repeaters but I am wondering if anyone knows which ones are more active that you can just get on and rag chew. Also if there are any good repeaters on the 5 FWY, through Gilroy, and up to San Jose. That is the route I will be taking.

There used to be a really good cajun restaurant in Atlanta called "A Taste of New Orleans". It was on one of the Peachtree Streets/Blvd/Ave/etc near one of the famous strip joints (I forget the name). They had the absolute best andouille sausage with their red beans & rice! It's been about 10 years since I've been there, but I'm coming up short Googling for it. Did it close down or something? Are there any other good cajun restaurants in Atlanta?

Every month or two there seems to be an ominous report from a research organization about the prevalence in internet connected computers of spam bot software and trojans that (apparently) aren't picked up by pc based virus scanning programs. So how do the researchers identify them? Are there online scanners for end users that can identify spam bots, trojans, key loggers and other malware not picked up by the usual anti virus programs? Bonus: I'm running without a real time antivirus scanner, depending on regular online scanning from several sites. No problems so far. Is this an acceptible practice?

I was hoping to find something a little (a lot) more affordable. I'm running a Mac.

I would REALLY like to be able to read Japanese web pages on it, but whenever I surf to a page with Japanese text it just shows up as garbage. I've installed Opera Mini on my phone, but that didn't help, even though the demo on their website does show Japanese characters. Is there any way to get this to work? I don't need to be able to type in Japanese, or send Japanese text messages. I just want to be able to read Japanese web pages. If I can't do this on the phone directly, then maybe there's another website I could visit that would convert the Japanese text to images?

So far under consideration are better solar, a spare battery for the phone and emergency chargers that can be recharged when I can get to mains power. The Freeplay 12V looks cool, but has also got some pretty poor reviews (but at least it looks like it works). What would you recommend?

I'm planning 3 weeks this summer to travel with some friends (just out of college) to East Asia. Ideally, we'd like to fly from NY to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok (in the cheapest possible order/arrangement). Any suggestions on attractions/lodgings/things-you-have-to-see at each destination (for the budget-conscious?) Spending approximately 4-5 days at each destination, hopefully spending a little time in the city and a little time exploring outside (i.e. I heard the beaches in Puket, near Bangkok, are very beautiful, so thats definitely planned).
I have made Turkish Delight about ten times, and not once have I been satisfied with the results. Either the candy ends up limp and flaccid, or it's full of crunchy little sugar crystals. No matter how much I stir, no matter how precise I am with the heat ... I always end up with a sugary mess. Your thoughts?
I am searching for examples of The Infinite, or the immeasurably large, in our mythologies and archetypes. I am also interested in the categories of Truth which came out of the emergence of Western, ontological thought. Does the trust in a rationally conceivable reality deny us the infinity of the mythological realm? By rooting ourselves in the present, and denying atemporal mythologies, do we also deny the infinite origins from where we came? [more inside]
Today at work, a closet was being cleaned out, many items were being tossed in a trash cart. I noticed that a few of these items were unopened, brand new (though out-of-date) items, and out of curiousity, checked to see if they were worth anything. I noticed that a few of them were going for not-insignificant amounts of money on ye olde eBay, and "rescued" them from the trash, thinking about creating a D-I-Y Christmas Bonus out of them by putting them up on eBay. Other co-workers have done similar things, selling a fair amount of old equipment at garage sales, etc, and none of my immediate peers seemed to think anything of it. Mrs. [anonymous], however, seems to feel that it's ethically wrong to do so, and more importantly potentially legally wrong. Does the hivemind have any knowledge of the legal (and/or ethical) implications of this D-I-Y Christmas Bonus? (For reference, we're probably talking $300 total, here.)

I have a short sleeve shirt that consistently comes out of the drier "bumpy" all over. There is a very repetitive pattern on the shirt like a checkerboard. The pattern alternates bumps and depressions. I can easily get the bumps out by ironing the shirt, but I'm lazy and would much rather just dry the shirt. Is there anything I can do to avoid the pattern? Or, should I just give up and relegate the shirt to my "do not wear because it's too hard to clean" bin? The shirt is 81% polynosic rayon and 19% polyester.

How can I make an archive of my SMS messages? In this era of network-accessible, searchable, archived, free, multi-gigabyte email storage, I'm a little miffed that my SMS storage is limited to arbitrary limit of 50 message on my phone. Lots of important things come in via SMS, and I hate how they just disappear. I get Twitters from friends, nice notes from my girlfriend, voice mail transcriptions from CallWave, business information via GOOG-411's text service... and so on. I'd like for the solution to cost as little as possible. I don't have an unlimited txt plan (I get a few hundred per month) so simply forwarding every SMS I receive and CCing every SMS I send to an email address isn't a very appealing solution as it really raises my SMS costs and takes effort. Since practically forever, I've slept at home as they do in Yurp. A fitted sheet on the mattress and notjing more than a down comforter inside of a duvet, either cotton or flannel. I replace my comforter every 2 years on avg, not because the feathers have lost their fluff, but instead because the white fabric shell of the comforter turns yellowish. Its a mystery to me why they all eventually yellow. Its not drool, I don't wet the bed and its quite unsightly. I theorize its a buildup of oils from my skin, or perhaps oils in the feathers/down. I've tried washing comforters in the past and eventually gave up on that. The comforter's loft never quite comes back the same and its still kinda yellow. Can this yellowing be prevented or delayed? Does this plus the fact that all comforters seem only to come in off-white shell colors indicate some sort of planned obsolescence?

So I'm wondering if this is something I could do myself. If so, what do I need to buy, what do I need to do (a step by step process would be nice) and, importantly, how easy/hard will this be for a first-timer to do?

Growing up a white boy in a white Oklahoma church, we always had some small influence of the Gospel tradition, but always sanitized for the white tradition of our past. But when I listen to the old Black spirituals, it affects me like nothing in the Baptist church I grew up with: a sense of the spiritual and the passion that I never felt in my choirs. But where should I start to learn the basics?
After 10 years of living in NYC, I've fled to a wooded acre in rural New Jersey. I'm a total scrooge who would never be caught dead with a Christmas tree, but I want to edibly decorate an outdoor (living) pine tree to attract animals like deer, birds, squirrels and whoever else. I'm thinking along the lines of stringing popcorn, carrots, dried corn for the deer, peanut butter and birdseed on pinecones for the birds, maybe some apple slices, etc. The problem is, my years in the city have left me devoid of any common sense on how to proceed. I don't care much whether the tree is pretty or not - I'm more interested in having animals in my backyard than flashing lights that sing "Jingle Bell Rocks". [more inside]

When running the windshield wipers in my car, the center of the blades skid across the glass with an incredibly irritating sque-e-e-eking sound (sort of what it sounds like when you rub an inflated balloon with your hand). For some reason, the blades seem to be encountering friction on the glass, and they're skidding across rather than wiping smoothly (the amount of rain or wiper-fluid doesn't seem to make any difference). This results in a series of jaggy wet lines across the windshield, right across my field of view - not to mention the grating sound that is very nearly driving me insane. So what can I do about this? I've tried wiping off the blades and the glass by hand, but that rarely works for more than a day. Could I put WD-40 or some kind of lubricant on the blades, or would that just make things smudgier? What about something like Rain-X? If it matters, the car is a 2007 Honda.
I took a job as director of admissions for a post-high school internship. Prospective interns have to go through an application process to attend. What is concerning is that last year we had approx. 1500 applications started but only 448 made it. We denied approx. 50. The rest either dropped out or never finished their application. This doesn't seem very efficient to me but I'm not sure if I'm even in line with a traditional college. So, if you have ever worked in an Admissions Office for a college: 1. What percentage of those who start an app actually make it? 2. During training what should I teach first? Product knowledge or phone/customer service skills? Thanks for the help!
I put an offer on a 100+ year old house in Galena, Illinois a year ago. The owners and I couldn't agree on a price so the deal fell through. It was a terrific rehabbed house on a hill with fireplaces in every room, a state of the art kitchen, guest quarters and a view of the whole town from the front window. I have become rather obsessed with this house and even checked up who, later, did purchase it. The strange thing was the sale price was less than my offer but it included something called "personal property" for 20k which the buyers apparently, added to the price of the house with the approval of the sellers. I've bought and sold condos and one house before but I never heard of including "personal property" in a deal. Did they throw in a car or artwork or something? Seems odd to me. I know I should get past this house but I just can't. Thanks for any input.

Thanks!

Now I would like to buy a faster in-between zoom, somewhere from 24-28 at the low end to 75-135 at the high end. I am trying to figure out whether to buy a Pentax, Tamron, or Sigma lens and am getting confused with all the contradictory reviews. One of the rooms in my apartment has no ceiling lighting, so I'd like to hang a fixture (paper lantern, very lightweight) from the ceiling. There are no power outlets on the ceiling. Is there an artful and attractive way to snake the power cord for this light up the wall from the outlet, onto the ceiling, finally leading to the fixture? The ceiling is 9 ft high, the cord is fairly long, extension cords are OK, and the light will be placed in a location that is maybe 4 or 5 feet away from the wall, and 2 or 3 feet from the ceiling.

Two Totally Unrelated Questions About THIS VIDEO. Not the content of the video, but the usage. 1) What flash player/UI is that? Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I feel like I've been seeing it not just on Gawker sites, but on many others. Is that a standard player UI that is built into Flash for output to .flv files? 2) Obviously this is totally unauthorized usage. Would this be considered "fair use"? Can anyone recommend any articles on the current state of fair use and online video? Are companies like Gawker and Huffington Post (example) on firm legal ground with this kind of excerpting, which they then host in their own systems/servers, or are they just gambling that the web is so anarchic, that Mr. Big Media Company won't come a suin'?

CrazyRussianMusicVideoFilter: I saw a great video by a Russian band from maybe 15 years ago, centering around an insane guy (real video, but made to look old), a cat (animated), and a painting that shows a doctor coming to bring him something (just strange). The band was named something like ночь, but youtube isn't coming up with anything like what I remember. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd be really thrilled if someone could tell me what song this is. It used to be popular(ish) on the radio in central Canada in the mid-90's and I *think* that the artist is Susan Aglukark (http://www.susanaglukark.com/) but I could be off on that. There are no words in the song that I can remember and it's really hard to google search on a melody. I've tried to create a picture of the notes (to the best of my ability) and I've also created a small mp3 file the overall melody (see tinyurl link - hopefully the ding-dong computer sound doesn't annoy you too much) I'd really appreciate your help with this - I've been singing this tune to people for years to try and figure out what song it is. Hi All, I just moved and have a new job that will, fortunately, give me the opportunity to purchase nice furniture for the first time in my life. I'm more into modern designs, but with a quality touch. If there is a manufacturer that makes super high quality, modern stuff that would be the ticket for me. Anyway, I'm looking for online stores to shop on. I'm looking for literally everything a typical two person home needs. We currently have no furniture save a recliner, so we need a lot! I'll admit I don't know the first thing about design, furniture history, etc. But I do want to learn. The ideal shops will offer quality and education. I'm not looking for IKEA or super cheap options. Basically, just give me some links of some kick ass online furniture and furnishing joints!

I cannot even get close enough to turn on the light. He has not peed, pooped, drank, or eaten for at least eight hours. When his owner called (four hours ago) I told her everything was great. I've always admired people who are just genuinely nice, warm folks and inspire everyone they talk to. I'd like to be one of those people when I grow up, but I don't know how to do it. Sometimes, when I do or say nice things, people get freaked out and think that I'm hitting on them, want something from them or am being insincere. That isn't the case, but every time it happens, I get a little more timid about doing nice things for people. It's easy to get by with a prickly Dorothy Parker routine, but that's not how I want to live my life. And I'm sick of not doing or saying nice things just because I'm not socially adept enough to pull it off. Being an asshole is easy, and no one ever questions your motives. How can I, as an introvert, act upon my nice impulses without freaking people out? What's the secret to being a mensch?

Advice on bareboat sailing in the Caribbean. Four of us intend to spend a week sailing in the Caribbean in early February. Our group knowledge of the Caribbean is very limited. But with so many islands and so many boat rental places, it's hard to know how to decide on an itinerary. Suggestions?

They have a guy on NPR sometimes who gives these brief (maybe under 15 minutes?) meditations on some topic or another, and he has a fun Slavic accent, and sort of a gruff but friendly voice. Do intelligence tests measure g (i.e. general intelligence)? How do we know? With most testing standards, there's an arbitrary physical constant in the world for us to measure and quantify: the meter is defined in terms of a wavelength of light in a vacuum, for instance. However, intelligence tests seem more like the kilogram's platinum-iridium cylinder, which is a sort of moving target. What's the standard for g? [more inside]

I do freelance graphics and have one client that has been a monthly, consistent paycheck for most of the year. I've billed them for about $15,000 since March. Most of my clients will be getting a card this holiday season, but I thought it would be a good idea to do something a bit more for this particular client. Suggestions? I'd like thoughts on both price range and specific items. Also, I have two contacts at the company: The big boss (male), who I speak to only occasionally, and the associate (also male) who is my main contact. The boss can be a bit demanding and has very high standards, but is generally respectful. The associate is a very sweet guy who I like on a personal level. He has also gone to bat for me a few times when the boss was being unreasonable. So: Gifts for boss, associate, or both? Thanks!
