My grandson is in to his teething time-- gnawing on wood gates, cribs, plastic (phone); my daughter has all the "appropriate" teething items (of no interest to Dylan). My ideas tend to be on the outer fringes of things; I was thinking of going to the local butcher and getting a bone for the kid to chew on; naturally I would boil it for a while (soup) and then file off the edges. I think the bone might have a better taste then wood or plastic; am I a bite to far on the fringe???
Are you a member of Society for Neuroscience or ASBMB or FASEB or something similar? I have a doctorate in biochemistry/pharmacology. I've completely left academia and work at a small biotech firm as a scientist. I don't want to permanently narrow my field of interest, so I thought it would be helpful to become a member of one of the science societies and/or attend some conference(s) separately from those that come up for my job. I'm having trouble deciding on what would be the most efficient and enjoyable option. [more inside]

Statistics whizzes, help settle an argument! How random are the results if a friend thinks of a number from 1-100, I think of a 1-100 number separately and then we add them together (subtracting 100 if the result is over 100)? So: Friend thinks of 29, I think of 90, result is 19. To me that seems properly random even if one or both of us tries to game it, but am I being statistically naive?

Short story. Plot involved a far-future factory city that is tuned exclusively to war, long after the actual war is over. The protagonist tries to confuse / stop the machine by intercepting some message and responding with some nonsense. I seem to recall it having to do with whole or skim milk, or some kind of sandwich. The ending was that they manage to shut down the city, but this makes it just fire off a new city-seed out of a big cannon. It made more sense in the story! Possible candidates: Ellison? Vonnegut? I am thinking 60s or 70s.

Star Wars Nerdery: Once, an indeterminate time ago, I was reading something about the making of the original Star Wars models. What is this term?

I draw and write with a variety of black pens in a Rhodia Reverse notebook. The notebook's paper is gridded with thin bluish lines, which I appreciate to help with ruling, etc., and because I like how the grid pattern looks with my drawings. I'd like to scan the notebook for safekeeping, but find that my scanner will only pick up a fraction of the gridding. I don't know if the gridlines are a true photo blue, but is there any way to ensure that my scans will match how I see the pages? I'm using an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo scanner.
I'm working with an English teacher that has a speculative fiction class for seniors in high school. He’s looking for a book (possibly something he would use as a supplement in class but also for his own personal reading) on the history of science fiction literature. He’s looking for something that is a retrospective and contains some literary criticism (optional). It can be a textbook but doesn’t necessarily need to be. There seems to be quite a few on Amazon but if I could get it narrowed down that would be great.

I'm about to embark on an approximately 3.5 month backpacking trip through the north of Africa and Middle East. I'm looking for advice on web/tech security while traveling. My first issue concerns web security- in order to avoid having credit card and banking info stolen through key loggers and such at internet cafes, I'm thinking of performing all my 'sensitive' interwebbing (ie hostel reservations, banking) on my iPod touch. Are there precautions I should take to ensure web security even on the Touch? Do more technologically competent MeFites than myself approve of using the Touch? Secondly, I'm planning on backing up my photos on a portable hard drive and I'll be using public computers to do so. Do I have to worry about any viruses and such getting onto the hard drive? If so, what can I do to avoid that? [more inside]

How are passwords stored in systems that require the user to enter specific digits of their password? Years ago, I met a guy. He was brilliant and creative and successful, and thought I was great. And suddenly, I was. I have never been so productive and creative in my life; I walked around with boundless energy and accomplished huge things with tremendous confidence. I also lost about ten pounds in a few weeks. Eventually, of course, things changed; you'll be shocked to hear he was less than perfect and it all ended in tears. But now I think about how I felt right at first and wonder: clearly, it was in me to be that way. Can I recreate that within myself, without some outside person sparking it? I would love to leap out of bed in the mornings and rush to create and accomplish all sorts of things, but don't want it to be giving the credit to someone else--or have it come falling down when the rush of infatuation is over. Is there a way, or is this why people do drugs?

ToonFilter: I remember, when I was very young, watching a cartoon about two bears living in a forest (note: they were not Yogi & Boo-Boo), who scrounged meals off people passing by. The older bear would, when an older couple drove through, make himself look pathetic and starving. When a jalopy full of teenagers drove through, he said "I'll do my Elvis act," whereupon he combed his head fur into a pompadour grabbed a guitar and sang "Hound Dog Hound Dog Rock and Roll Rock and Roll Hound Dog" and was rewarded with a bunch of eats. Has anyone else seen these and if so, what is the title of the short?

In Bob & Ray's soap opera parody "Mary Backstayge, Noble Wife" the characters put on a show, and during one rehearsal a musical number is played, called "In Your Hat". It's obviously an original cast recording from some obscure musical, but what? Google returns no results except for references to the Bob & Ray usage itself. What is the rentier income he is talking about? Is he saying that bond holders, generally, are rentiers?
At many restaurants, after the starter course is finished, the waiter will remove my dirty knife and fork from the plate, and leave them for me to use with my main course. I dislike this, and usually will ask for a clean knife and fork for the next course. My question is: what is the thinking behind this? The added cost I would think is trivial, and it just seems really weird to expect people to eat a new course with food from the last course on the utensils. Is there some financial aspect to putting more utensils through the dishwasher that I'm missing?

Plumbing question! I'm considering moving into a new workshop/studio space, price and location is perfect, the big downside being there is no toilet. It will basically just be me (and occasionally a few visiting friends who come to have a few beers) using the space. There is water and a sink in the space and I'm certainlay not considering using the sink! But, would it be possible to set up a urinal to go down the same set of pipes as the sink? I'm thinking - 'It ends up in the same place right!' But maybe someone in the know could tell me on a scale of 1 - 5 whether this is: Fine, A little gross, Gross, Really gross, or Disgusting... If this is off the table, are there any other solutions?
Is it worth partitioning big (>1.5TB) tables in PostgreSQL? Most partitioning stuff seems to be based on the idea of sequential data, where older data is moved off onto secondary hardware or something, but this data is all equally important. I can't figure out if partitioning would be a win when all rows are equally likely to be accessed. If it makes a difference, most queries will access only one row, but multiple row queries will span multiple partitions regardless of the partitioning criteria I choose.

Is there a way to help reduce my heart rate after it gets all ramped up from drinking caffeine? Lately I've noticed that whenever I drink even a small cup of black tea my heart starts to beat rapidly a few hours later and I feel a lot of pressure in my chest, like my heart is trying to beat faster but there's a rubber band around it. The sensation is similar to panic or running, but I don't feel panicky in my head. Aside from obviously avoiding caffeine, will doing something like drinking tons of water help calm me down faster than just waiting it out?

I'm 33 and I feel like a hopeless failure professionally. To an outsider it would not seem so - I've gone to prestigious undergrad and grad (MBA) schools and have had decent to very good job opportunities and experiences. However, the pattern of my career has been: stress about finding a good job, land one eventually, do ok and enjoy it in the beginning, then begin a downward slide into frustration, anger, and general dissatisfaction and start to think about getting out - maybe this isn't the right function, this isn't the right industry, this isn't the right company, more school? I've chopped and changed industries & roles (grass is always greener syndrome) and consequently don't really have deep experience in anything. I have never been promoted, never gotten a raise, never gotten a really good review. I've never voluntarily left a job - never fired per se but either laid off, close to it or my employer wasn't sad to see me go. Most of my peers are plowing full steam ahead into senior positions and handsome compensation; meanwhile I'm struggling to hang on to a job. My professional life has always been and continues to be a source of anxiety, frustration, anger, shame - agony - for me and I desperately want peace, and a plan for moving forward. [more inside]

A large portion of the women I know (myself included) have breast asymmetry - one breast is larger than the other. I know this is unremarkable and pretty normal; humans aren't actually that symmetrical when you look closely. But I was talking about this with my girlfriend this morning and we noticed that for both of us, it's the left breast that is larger. Is there a species-wide skewing of left vs right breast for which one tends to be bigger? Does it follow handedness? Do men have noticeable asymmetry (presumably scaled smaller)? If it skews left, is there some whacked out evolutionary advantage of having the extra bit of padding over the heart?

I am in Hong Kong doing an art project, and I want to create room dividers out of bamboo scaffolding, like they have all over Hong Kong, with perhaps some kind of neutral colored tarp or muslin draped over it. This stuff is in piles all over HK - does anyone know how I can buy or rent some, and have someone build two wall dividers out of it, perhaps 3x4 meters each? I'm thinking it should be fairly quick, but I don't really know - do any of you know anything more about this process, or what the cost might be? (I don't have a big budget at all, probably no more than $100 or $150). If it seems too expensive, any alternative ideas?
Would you buy this used Toyota Corolla? I've got a line on a 1997 Corolla with 150k on the engine, but the transmission was replaced five years ago (after dying at 125k) with a used transmission from JapanDirect. Is JapanDirect reliable, in your experience? Would you buy a used car with a replacement transmission?

The car is not registered, so they won't be able to drive it more than a few feet on driveway (backing out and driving back in). Is this amount of activity enough so that the car will be functional when I return? Or do I need to take more extensive storage measures (e.g. disconnecting battery)? Thanks!

My grandmother was defrauded by a pair of con artists pretending to be me. Who can I report this crime to?
My grandmother was just defrauded by a pair of con artists who, pretending to be me, told her that I was in a car accident in Canada and needed her to wire money. She's fine, but lost a few thousand dollars. She said that she doesn't mind losing the money (she's just happy I'm safe), and doesn't want to be bothered by the police. I respect that decision, but I'm concerned that if let off the hook, the con artists in question will be able to prey on others -- they are obviously targeting elderly people. Who can I report this fraud to? (Additionally, and out of curiosity -- any thoughts on how they discovered my relationship with my grandmother?) [more inside]

My wife and I had injections for a TB test on Monday morning (we're adopting our second child and had to get the test). We had to come in Wednesday morning at 9:45 to see if the injection caused any problems. The NP told us everything was fine and we were TB negative. It's several days later now - Thursday evening - and I'm fine, but my wife has enormous bumps/hives right at the injection site on her arm. I'm assuming the TB test shot is some kind of totally inert drug so you can't actually get sick from it. Why would a disease that we were supposedly negative for cause hives? Is she allergic to something else? Help! Should we just go to the DR now? The hives are pretty weird. Neither of us has any food allergies of any kinds.

Let's say you're looking for a band to play at a conference for 500 river and watershed activists in Charleston, South Carolina in June. Let's also say you're doing this from Portland, Oregon and know next to nothing about the music scene in that beautiful coastal city. Finally, let's say that your fellow staff members have barred you from booking another bluegrass band ever again, yet this isn't exactly a Top 40/cover band crowd. What's a soul to do?

For new or exotic things, we also expect them to 'try' the food before opting out. I’m 35, male, and live in San Diego. I’m hoping to find a retreat (or something similar) that is not too far away, not too expensive (maybe $2,000-$3,000), and that starts as soon as possible. I have recently gone through a lot of unpleasant life changes, and have been drinking too much, too often, and for too long. My primary issue may be with alcohol, but I want to try this before I try outpatient treatment. I’m hoping to find a retreat where I can recharge and also break my drinking habit. Ideally, it would include some combination of yoga, meditation, and counseling or something directed to my drinking habit. Thanks.

When I used to do testing for the State Employment service we had what we called a general "interests inventory" test ("Would you rather collect butterflies or draw a picture of a building?") We would give it to young people to help determine what areas of work they might like to pursue. Is there a current, free online test like that? My nephew wants to try to begin to set his son on a career path (freshman in high school) but the young man doesn't seem interested in anything special. Thanks.
A friend had some devastating news this week: she is losing her sight and (symptoms indicate) it's due to multiple sclerosis. I am young enough that I haven't yet helped friends through serious illness and lifelong physical disabilities, and I would really appreciate some advice on how I can give her the support that she needs, both in terms of practical matters and the realm of feelings. Are there any safety risks to 9V AC applied to the skin? I'm building musical instruments that conduct audio through the skin in the form of 9 volt square waves from about 30-1500 Hz. I can sometimes feel the buzz in my fingertips. Soon I'm going to make a bigger one for dancers to use, and the electricity in this case may be passing from foot to hand or across both arms. The dancer's skin may be sweaty and salty, increasing conductivity. Are there any health risks? References appreciated. [more inside]

Hello, I am looking for ideas about what would be a good name for following electronic product/video converter box (in nutshell) :- It is a small box which converts regular 2D video into 3D video and using the HDMI port on this box, this 3D video can be watched on a regular LCD TV while wearing Red-Blue glasses. The product name should be small (2 words or so), pithy, not necessarily technical jargonry, and telling about its functionality in its name (if possible). thanks, -GM.

Guys, where do you put your coins? I've tried wallets with a coin pocket; they made my wallet too bulky. I'd taken to using that little coin pocket that some pants have (just below the belt loop on the right); that was not bad, but my newest favourite pants don't have a pocket like that. Is there an easy way to hack a little pocket into an existing set of pants? Or a simple, non-bulky way to carry coins? Thanks.
