Laptopfilter: I'm curious about how CPU usage, noise level, and being able to go to standby/hibernation and shut down properly are related. For a long time (over a year, I think) my HP laptop(running Windows XP) was at 100% CPU usage all the time, ran loudly, and wouldn't go to standby or hibernation or shut down all the way. [catfilter] Why does my cat go into corners, look up, and meow? Three locations, 2-3 times a week, 9 years: Living room corner (behind the lamp), bedroom corner, studio corner. She'll do it for a 10 minutes sometimes, just looking up and meowing. Sometimes she'll get up on the coffee table and meow, but mostly it's in the corners. Why?

I have a Crystal Report which loads data from a stored procedure. The client wanted some new fields added to the report, so I added them to the stored procedure. Every time the US federal reserve meets to decide on changing interest rates, the news articles say something like "in their statement the fed says ...". So my question is where can I find a listing of the statements for the past 10 or 20 years? I'd like to see how the words change over time. [more inside]
I'm looking for a remote control solution for my PC. I find myself watching a lot of TV on my computer from my bed and I'd really like to be able to just click a button to turn off my monitor instead of having to get up and walk across the room. Yes, I'm that lazy.

A friend asked why (I thought) his digital camera batteries conk out after 3, 4 or 5 pictures. The situation: he is a real cold weather outdoor enthusiast. He's tried a number of battery types and it happens with each kind. I assume it has to do with the cold, but is keeping it enveloped in warm packaging, yanking it out (risking fogging) then wrapping it up again the only answer. (I tried searching "AskMeta" and could not find a specific repsonse to this problem. Thanks.
If there was ONE thing that you wish you had been taught at your current job what would that be? What I am looking for is not something like...."Don't talk to Spencer in HR, he is a perv," more on the lines of "how to get information on X when Y is not working," or "What things can program Z do to make my job easier?" I need to design some sort of educational media for workplaces (software or internet based) and I am looking for some juicy leads. General is better. Thanks
I have a siemens C55 telephone that is simlocked. I've also gotten the unlock code off my provider a while back. The problem is I either didn't receive or have lost the unlock instructions, i.e. what exactly I need to type into the phone along with the unlock code, and whether this should be with the original sim card, a new sim card or no sim card at all loaded. I know I can unlock it without the code if I have a data cable, but I don't have a data cable and they'd probably cost more than the entire phone is worth. Googling is made difficult by the millions of sites offering to unlock phones for low low prices.

I own a small company and I'm at my wits end. We have some people who are good but not great, and they keep making mistakes or not following rules, which drive other people nuts because they have to catch these people's mistakes and otherwise clean up after them. Problems vary but are almost always caused by carelessness (putting in a wrong zip code, mistyping pricing, forgetting to get something signed off, etc) These aren't necessarily enough for the managers here to want to fire anyone, but there's only so many times you can say "don't do it again." It's also causing some of the better (more careful) employees to lose morale. I'm hearing things along the lines of "nobody cares if mistakes are made, so who cares." Please help me come up with ideas on how to discipline people. It seems like there's only so little you can do besides the usual, which seem severe (firing, less/no bonus). Where's the middle ground? How do we motivate these people to do better?

I regularly use ffmpeg to encode videos (from mpeg2 to mpeg4) for my ipod. I've been doing this for nearly a year with no problems. Now, every time I start an encode, my system is suddenly under a lot of pressure - I can't use any other application. If I go into the windows task manager and set the priority to 'below normal', all is fine again. Anyone have any idea why this change might have occured, or any idea how I can get around it (preferably without using task manager)? [more inside]

I have an old shuffle. When I first got it, I could arrange its playlist on the iMac it syncs to without it actually being plugged in. This was fast, since it all happened on the computer. Then, I could plug in the shuffle and the actual synchronization would churn for about 30 sec (which I would not need to be present for). But in one of iTunes' famously regressive "upgrades," the ability to arrange tracks on my shuffle without it being plugged in vanished. Now, arranging tracks is a laborious process with delays between every user interaction. It sucks. No way am I buying a cute tiny colorful new one if it has the same crappy synchronization method. Does it? (I'm aware of iTunes' ability to pick random tracks from my library. No thanks!)

I am looking for a writer or thinker (to cite in a paper) who said something good about "There are things that every educated person should know." I know that this is a popular idea, so I'm most focused on enlightenment and later thinkers. It doesn't have to be the first person to argue for some set of competencies / knowledge, and it is not terribly important exactly what's in the set (but if you know, or if there's a quote, please include it). Any ideas? [more inside]

I'm trying to identify a platinum hallmark for an elderly friend, but she lives far away so I can't actually see it (it's on a ring) or take it to a jeweller. Years ago on vacation in Europe, I was in Prague, and walking past a movie theater I saw a poster for "The River Wild"--that Meryl Streep river-rafting action movie out at the time. The language on the poster was, of course, Czech, but the strange thing i noticed was Streep's name, which was spelled "Streepova", with a little carat above the "o". Czech speakers, what's up with that? Is the "-ova" part silent, or is it pronounced somewhat like it would sound in English? If the latter, then this would totally change Streep's name, from one syllable to three syllables. Is this a Czech name? Even so, Meryl's is "Streep", so I can't imagine why it was changed. #1) HAPPY MUSIC: What music do you use to cheer yourself up? A friend of mine has clinical depression. I am gathering recommendations of happy music so I can make a playlist of tunes to help uplift and revive downcast spirits. #2) AMBIENT SOUND: what music you listen at work to help create some good background music to help you concentrate on your tasks? #3) INSPIRATION: What do you listen to, to revive your energy and get you pumped up to work on that otherwise annoying project?
Recently discovered Explosions in the Sky, The music fades away in the background after awhile and I can concentrate on doing work. Anybody else have artists that are simillar or music that helps you get your work done and gets you in that zone. I do not want classical music, sleepy instrumental music and not drum&bass..please.

I just ate a peanut butter and honey sandwich on soft white bread. The bread on the honey side developed a kind of rough texture, almost like the bread had been lightly toasted on one side. Not unpleasant, but kind of odd. I noticed this when I was a kid and I've always wondered about it, and just now realized that someone here might know what's going on (I grew up in the South, and I have been known to eat molasses and butter sandwiches - the rough-texture thing doesn't happen with molasses, only honey. I don't know about other sugary syrup products).

I have fought depression, anger, fatigue, lack of motivation (and more) for thirty years. I have taken so many psycho-pharmacological drugs that I couldn't list them all. One constant has been antidepressants. I've been taking Zoloft for ten years. It has left me with memory problems, brain fog, etc. I also take Klonopin (2mgs a day) and that leaves me feeling jittery if I miss it and has the "tolerance' effect of needing more and more. I have tried tapering the Zoloft - very slowly - but I am like a raging lunatic off of it. The Doctor says, "symptoms have returned." I say, "withdrawal," or as they like to call it with antidepressants: "discontinuance syndrome." Hey, if you freak out without it - I don't care what you call it, but withdrawal is what most people would think. I need to fix my feet. For as long I can remember, my feet have stuck out (supination.) I have super-high arches - you can barely see the inside portion of my feet on a foot print. I find it nearly impossible to hold my feet together parallel and flat (inner heel to inner heel, big toe to big toe) - they rotate upward and outward, instead. If I manage to get my feet in something close to that position, my toes get goofy, pointing in multiple directions. I want to learn how to straighten my (bare) feet when walking and hold them together, flat, the way I described...
The tip of my left big toe* sometimes gets numb, down to the point about half-way down the nail, all around the toe. I can't see any cause for this. It's not injured or gangrenous. "What's up with that?" * someone else's left big toe

I’ve seen some great suggestions come out of AskMe in the past and really need some creative help to break my naming block. I have been building a new online community service for groups. Our service specializes in helping groups collaborate and share knowledge effectively within their community. The obvious big issue (besides getting us to agree on the name) is acquiring the URL. We are not opposed to buying the URL, but all attempts to date have required obscene amounts of money A few names that we like, but cannot agree upon: (I own the URL’s): GroupSwim , Brighthive, GroopScoop As you can see, I’m really trying to incorporate group or the idea of community into the name. Any help or suggestions would be huge! Even a vote on the names above would be a big help. Thanks…

IANAD do I do not know is this is a riduculous concern or not that I have. My son is 28 and I have reason to believe that he and his partner are trying to conceive. When he was 3 or 4 he had some fllings done on his teeth and the (old country) doctor who did them " forgot" to cover his lap when he took the xrays and I have always wondered if that sort of exposure to radiation ( 25 yrs ago roughly) could have damaged the motility of his sperm, or somehow compromised the general overall health or production of sperm. I have not mentioned this to him and I do not know if I should or just wait and see. Any thoughts or helpful informed repsonses? Thanks

I purchased a service to deliver traffic to one of my web sites. I know it reeks of scam, but I was curious. That's beside the point. The terms of service don't state anything about the timeframe in which that traffic will be delivered. It's come in dribs and drabs (then entire purchase would take years, literally, to be delivered). And their stats do not match mine. Every single day shows them delivering more traffic than my whole site gets. That said, I have two questions. 1) What is the legal basis for timely delivery of such a service, given that timeliness is not discussed in their terms at all. There ought to be a reasonable assumption of how long they have to perform their service, right? 2) Since legal action is not a reasonable option (it would cost more to get a refund than the refund is worth), what are some ideas for completely legal ways I could put a spotlight on this company's potentially fraudulent but certainly terrible service?

I don't drive, so it pretty much needs to be near a métro station; on that note I work & live on the Orange line (work=Cremazie / home=Cote-Vertu). I'm kind of lazy, but I do enjoy going to a gym... i.e. if it's not too much out of my way, I'll go regularly. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ok so I've started seeing an ex girlfriend of mine, we had a pretty intense relationship a few years back........
Ok so I've started seeing an ex girlfriend of mine, we had a pretty intense relationship a few years back which had a messy ending. We got back in touch a few weeks ago and have been talking on the phone for hours, met up a few times and seemed to be rembering all the reasons why we fell in love the first time. We met-up last Monday, everything went well and we had arranged to see each other again on Saturday. We exchanged a few messages on Wednesday she was saying how much she was looking foreword to sat how excited she was etc. I text her on the sat to confirm she does reply, I ring her she doesn’t answer. Slightly concerned I txt her saying iell be there anyway. Come the time to meet she’s not there and her phone is turned off. I've spent the last few days feeling like crap. I've text her a few times asking what the hell is going on still not one reply. Now I don’t know what to do if she’s changed her mind about me/us that I could deal with, just, but to drop all contact like that. Aghh it’s doing my head in. I can’t fathom how she could be so into me one second and ignore me the next. Anyone been in a similar situation, should I just drop it and move on? Do I confront her in person? With anyone else I think I would have got the message by now, she just means so much to me.

“These far away places with strange-sounding names…” Where is that phrase from?! I have reason to believe it was first written by a romantic poet (possibly Tennyson, Browning, or Arnold) but I can’t beat the answer out of Google. Name that sci-fi short story: In the prologue, a colonist ship has crashed on a water planet. The colonists can't survive there themselves, so they genetically engineer humans to be about the size of microbes and live in the water instead. Most of the story deals with the resulting aquatic society, their interactions with other species of microbes, and their search for their now-forgotten origins. And no, it was not "The Incredible Journey". Any ideas on what it might be?

How can I make the best of things in a relationship that's been derailed by both our health problems and our shyness?
I am in my mid-thirties and after suffering from shyness all my life am finally in my first long-term (2 years plus) relationship (she is slightly younger and this is also her first relationship). We have had difficult times when her mental illness/ anxiety problems got worse, and I have had bad spells with depression, plus our love life has been hampered by my impotence, but she has stuck with me and I really value our relationship. However our relationship seems to be "stuck" - she has said that while she really cares about me, she's not "in love" with me, and I have the same feeling for her. When we talked about this I felt maybe we should end the relationship and try to remain friends, but she persuaded me that both of us are highly likely to going back to being unhappilly single without the emotional support we enjoy now, and that it was better to focus on what we had (we get on well, enjoy spending time together, don't dislike or argue with each other) rather than what we didn't have. I'm convinced she is sincer, and I also want to put in some thought and effort to improve our relationship, but I'm not sure what to do or where to start. MeFites can you help? [more inside]

This is probably a simple math question for someone who knows math. Schools create an index number by using this equation: (X * testscorenumber) + (Y * GPA) + constant = indexnumber Some schools index numbers max out at 5, some at 200. Nonetheless, the difference between schools is in how they weight GPA vs. testscore. What formula would allow me to compare the importance of once factor over another among schools. I.e., School A weighs testscores 2x more than school B? Is it a simple ration between X and Y?

I have a Nokia smartphone. I have T-Mobile. But T-Mobile doesn't sell my phone, so they won't give me a smartphone unlimited data plan and I'm stuck with the much more expensive Total Internet package. But if I log in to T-Mobile's self service site, I can tell them I have any damn phone I like. So if I do that, and tell them I have a Blackberry or a Sidekick, and pick the BB or SK smartphone plans, is there some technical reason it won't just work? Am I in any serious danger of cancellation by violating the TOS or anything else?

I'm looking for recommendations for a home MP3 player. I want something with much larger capacity than an iPod (preferably using standard 3.5" drives), and am happy for it to be physically quite a bit bigger than an iPod. I just read in the NYT that Zyprexa (an atypical anti-psychotic, used to treat schizophrenia and mania) is the fourth-most prescribed drug in the world. Other lists I've seen put similar drugs in the top-ten sellers. How can this be? Are there that many people suffering from these disorders compared to being medicated for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or any of a dozen other maladies I can think of that appear, on general observation, to be far more common? (And I don't believe, neccessarily, that this is simply doctors overprescribing - because, at least to me, that premise would mean overprescribing all drugs, not just the ones in question, right?)

Where should I buy a battery for a 2-year-old cell phone? My LG VX6100 is down to 48 hours of standby time, and I'd prefer not to get a new phone (and renew my cell carrier contract) right now. I'm wary of lousy or simply fake cell phone battery stores selling refurbished or used batteries as if they were new. Does anyone know of any reputable sources of new cell phone batteries for old phones? [more inside]
