'crapped out' is kind of vague as far as technical terms go. If there is some technical issue preventing winAVI from working on your machine, it might also prevent other products from working as well. It would be helpful if you could provide detail so we don't end up recommending something that would run into the same limitations.

Understood.

WinAVI worked out for the first 4-5 times I used it to convert files. After that, it simply disappears whenever I try to click on the options tab or on the convert tab. I've tried re-installing it, but it doesn't remedy the problem.

I have not installed anything new onto the machine at all.

I can't speak for your problem, but I rather like VSO's ConvertXtoDVD and it has a version for 64-bit Vista.

It's a little slower but I rather like the options, especially the ease of making a decent-looking menu.

Try Handbrake. It's an excellent DVD to H.2634/MPEG-4/XViD tool that is free, lightweight, and performs marvelously on Vista x64.

I'm not positive on 64 compat, but I've used MediaCoder (free), and Xilisoft Video Converter (~$50) on Vista 32 without a hitch. There's also Any Video Converter (free), which I haven't tried.
