My transparencies are not transparencies
August 11, 2008 8:57 PM
My GooFu Fails me... I am having problems with transparencies showing up with black backgrounds. See image for details.
Xp Pro x64
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
I have searched Google, which I am usually pretty successful at, but I am not able to find anything that resolves this issue. Could be that I just don't have the right search terms, so I am turning to MeFi to help me find an answer.
This issue occurs at random (could go by a day, a week, or a month).
Rebooting fixes the issue.
The issue occurs globally (OS, apps, and websites).
Ideas?

That's helpful, but most importantly does replacing the video driver fix the issue? This is a classic sign of a corrupted, damaged, or buggy video driver.

You are not alone. Consensus seems to be it's to do with x64 Edition using 175.16 or higher drivers.
May want to back down to a lower rev of the driver.
Also, as a (quickish) fix, does changing the resolution to something else (remember to click "Apply") and then back again fix the issue?

Good find blue_wardrobe. The quick fix doesn't work (resolution change) but at least I have a thread to follow. I will install older drivers tomorrow, but I won't know if it fixes it for a while.
Thanks for finding the thread though. Defiantly x64/NVIDIA related.

It's possible some application you're opening is causing the issue due to some kind of weird video glitch / conflict, or DLL it loads, or .. who knows?
It's possible some application you're opening is causing some other application (probably something native to Windows) to crash or operate incorrectly, which could also cause the display issue.
That's gonna be a tough one to nail down, since it's likely some sort of obscure conflict between programs.. or between one program and your OS, etc...
Have you tried running a "Repair" from the XP install disc? No guarantees, but that might fix it if it's some DLL or Windows resident program that's gotten wonky over time...
