Event listings for Wordpress?

Looking for a plugin, service, or code that will allow me to easily turn pages on my Wordpress blog into event listings.
Surprisingly, very difficult to find something that works and does the following:
1. Take posts in certain event categories and sort them on archive/event pages by the date the event will take place (likely using a custom field).
2. Allow for more than one category to be used, and for event listings to appear in more than one page (ie, films, concerts, benefits).
Possible?

I would assume that the normal category usage would apply here, so you should be good to go on that front as well.
Doesn't use custom fields or anything like you mentioned, so if you're planning on being able to schedule posts in other categories and have them show up later you might run into some problems.
