IE5 -> Panther

So. I've finally upgraded from OS9x, and I'm now using Panther... but I have no idea how to migrate my IE5 bookmarks, my Eudora e-mail and contact stuff, or my Palm contacts, calendar, memos, and the like. I know items like this have been asked, but I've not had any luck with Google.

IE5? does installing FireFox find the bookmarks, etc. and copy them over? it does on windows... (hey, if you're upgrading to a modern OS might as well get a modern browser too.) don't know if Safari has some sort of auto-detection and import function.

you might try (1) dropping into OS9, (2) installing some browser that copies IE settings [netscape 6/7 or an older mozilla build?] then (once you have the IE favorites as a bookmark file) end OS9 compat mode and import the bookmarks into a newer browser in OSX.

but i'm a windows guy so maybe there's an easier way.

Response by poster: I'm migrating from IE 5 to Safari, FireFox, and one other browser whose name escapes me (I want to have several available for comparison).

I'm migrating from Palm to iCal and Address Book.

I'm migrating from Eudora, but don't know to what just yet... I have 14 some-odd e-mail addresses, and really need a solid ALIAS/PERSONALITY control.

I ended up saving all my old bookmark lists as html files, and then opening them in Safari and creating new bookmarks--it was a pain. (i'm sure there's a better/easier way)

Mail imported my Eudora mailboxes so that was easy.

IE5/Mac's Bookmarks file is just an HTML file. You can find it in <Startup Disk>:System Folder:Preferences:Explorer:Bookmarks.html. I think.

Migrating from Palm to iCal should be as simple as launching Palm Desktop and exporting a .vcal file, and then importing that into iCal. This part will be easy if you have Classic on the machine. If not, you could download the X version of Palm Desktop and use it to do the conversion. Another way to do it, which is the way I did it, was to sync my Handspring in Palm Desktop, and then set up iSync (using the Palm Conduit) to sync all of the data back into iCal, Address Book and the rest.

Mail.app, included with MacOS X, is good enough for my ten or so e-mail accounts. It has good multi-account support.

IE 5. Find the bookmarks.html for os9.

Run IE 5 on OSX. It will create a bookmarks file in your library.

Copy the IE5 bookmarks overwriting the IE5(osx) bookmarks.

Now, download onyx - http://www.titanium.free.fr/english.html

It will permit you to tell safari to reimport your bookmarks.

if you don't want to install an application, you can type this in the terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

relaunch safari, and there should be a debug menu, and an option to reimport your ie favorites. to get rid of the debug menu just type this into the terminal and relaunch again:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0

I migrated to Panther last year and used Eudora 4.2 (no, really) until it shit the bed. Apple's built-in mail program sucked in all the settings pretty well.
