Tasting it again, for the first time.

After months of nutritionists, doctors, and all medicine-like worry we have pinpointed my main food issues down to over-eating because of a lack of breakfast. So, is there really anything wrong with having just corn flakes and milk instead of the gigantic breakfasts they have on the TV?

Over-eating is caused due to a lack of self-control only. I've been having just a coffee and a couple of fruits every morning for the last few months and have never felt better and fitter. Do you watch TV while having your food? If so, try turning it off and you'll be surprised to feel full after eating less. Also, give your body some time to feel full after eating a bit. Most people keep eating until they feel full, and by that time, they've already overeaten a lot.

Mm, actually I find that a breakfast with some fat and fiber and carbs in it keeps me way fuller and "sets me up" for a good eating day. When I eat just a handful of cereal or a piece of fruit, my metabolism rushes off like a thundering steed and I eat like a hog all day (to mix my animal metaphors). I like a smoothie made with flax meal, soy yogurt, tons of berries, and a bit of almond, peanut, or cashew butter. YMMV.

Best answer: Having some protein in the morning doesn't mean you have to have bacon and eggs. How about a piece of cheese toast? I can't eat big meals in the morning (food = yuck for the first 3 hours or so of being awake), but I can manage a piece of cheese toast, an apple with peanut butter or cheese, or toast with some peanut butter on it. Keeps me going until lunch, easily.

Best answer: What I like to do is dump a scoop of protein powder on my cheerios.

The EAS "Vanilla" brand you can get at costco is particularly good tasting.

Cheerios have a somewhat lower glucose level factor thing than straight cornflakes, and the the EAS powder makes it taste VERY good, like the frosted version but with no added sugar (it does have some sucrolose).

Best answer: Nothing at all, as long as you plan a midmorning snack like a banana or a small handful of oranges. Cornflakes and milk won't provide you enough energy to get through to lunch, so you run the risk of overeating at lunch and later in the day unless you stay well fueled throughout the morning.

small handful of oranges

Ha! My hands aren't that big. I meant almonds.

The time to carb up is in the morning. Have yourself a bit of yogurt or cottage cheese with a bit of fruit. It takes no time to eat those things and you have short acting carb energy and longer lasting protein/fat energy. Eat some more fruit an hour or so later. Don't get suckered in by the three meal a day paradigm. Graze all day, watch your caloric intake, create a calorie deficit with some light exercise and there ya go.

If you eat mostly carbs for breakfasts -- i.e. a bowl of cornflakes -- your blood sugar is going to spike and crash, and you're going to be ravenously hungry later and overeat. You don't have to have a huge breakfast to prevent that from happening; size is not what's most important. Try eating just a single egg and a single strip of bacon or sausage and you will feel fuller longer than if you had the bowl of cornflakes. If you doubt it, try it out one day; nothing to lose. Your blood sugar won't spike, and won't crash, and you won't feel suddenly hungry.

Muesli. Yogurt. Fruit. Soak the muesli overnight in milk or water, add yogurt and fresh fruit when you get up, the grains will take a while to digest, you won't get the cornflake crash and it should keep you going till lunch.
