GSM Unlock

There plenty of sites which offer unlocking service for a gsm phone. Are there some services or methods that are superior to others? I have read that unlocking has occasionally resulted compromised phone features. Any suggestions or recommendations? It's a Motorola Razr.

Are you in Vancouver, Canada? Just about any Asian-run mobile phone accessory store (try Richmond) should be able to do it in 5 minutes for $15-20. Bring a SIM of a different GSM carrier if you can, and test in on the spot. The Razr is a super common phone, you shouldn't have any problems.

You might be able to do it yourself with SEEM editing software (SEEMs are what Motorola phones' internal configuration files are called, afaict). I don't remember whether the carrier lock is something you can tweak that way or not. I tweaked a bunch of my razr settings with a SEEM editor, but I bought it unlocked.

It may be worth checking out hacktherazr.com for information -- you may be able to do it yourself.

I hacked my Razr V3 myself and have had no trouble with it at all. I used a little program called Moto4lin [I have a mac] and the instructions on the site DF mentions above. SEEM editing is not super difficult. I am also not sure if you can do carrier-unlocking since there's only one carrier where I live anyhow [cingular/AT&T] but this page and others seem to indicate it's not that tough.

Who do you have your phone with? If you're in the US, I believe the phone companies are required to give you the unlock code if you ask.

I have one of the newer RAZRs, I called up Cingular, asked for the subsidy unlock code, gave them the IMEI of the phone, and a day later I received the unlock code in an email. I popped in another carrier's SIM card (in this case, from an Italian carrier, since I was traveling overseas), I entered the unlock code when it asked, and it worked like a charm. Cost: $0.00.

If it's T-Mobile you can call them and they will walk you through the unlocking procedure.
