iBookFilter - my wife's iBook running OS 9.1 fails to mount audio CDs or CD-R's. In each case, it instead asks to format the disk (which is laugable since the drive isn't capable of writing). How can she once again use the drive?

I had a similar problem with mounting CDs on a powerbook in OSX. I don't know if you can do this in 9, but I rebuilt the pram and the PMU (power management unit, I think?) and the problem disappeared.

plinth, have you disabled or moved any Extensions? There are several related to mounting CDs, like Apple CD/DVD Driver, or any files mentioning "High Sierra" or "ISO 9660".

Resetting the PRAM and rebuilding the desktop might kick things into action if the Extensions are active but not kicking in.

Next step after that would be doing a Clean Install of the operating system from your system disks, being careful to check the options that will preserve your current preferences in a place where you can get them back if you need them.
