Question: Best free Windows malware removers?

What free Windows malware detectors/removers should I put on a CD or USB stick?

I will shortly be visiting a relative with an XP machine which I have reason to believe may be less than sanitary. I have not been maintaining Windows boxes regularly for a couple of years, so I am not up with the play, but I have a modest level of cluefulness as a hardcore Unix person and ex-XP user.

If I were to offer to clean this machine up, what I should I use to do so? I was thinking of creating a disk of utilities for the purpose before I leave.

I would recommend following this guide. Short of reformatting the machine, it has been the most successful method of removing malware for me. All of the software mentioned in it is free or has free trials that are fully functioning for the purposes outlined in the document.

It contains:
My normal routine is to first run a full system scan with SUPERAntiSpyware and then follow it up with all the cleaning options and registry cleaning offered by CCleaner.

Also AVG Free (mentioned above) for antivirus.

I can't believe that nobody's mentioned Ad-Aware. They're the gold-standard, last I checked.

Spyware doctor free edition seems good - it's free and you can schedule it to do automatic scans (unlike some other free offerings) once your system is clean. However if your system is really dirty I would recommend running a number of others as well such as Ad-Aware and adn Super Anti Spyware.

For Anti-virus software, I've been pretty happy with Avast, which, again, is free.

And for belt and braces use CCleaner.
