What's good in Stamford, CT?

I just moved to Stamford, CT and I am looking for a good barber, bars, restaurants and anything else cool.

I just moved to downtown Stamford (near corner of Hoyt and Bedford) and I am looking for any recommendations for a barber, bars/restaurants and any other cool places to check out and things to do.

I've been here for about a month and I am starting to settle in but now I am getting a little shaggy and bored and I am looking to MeFi for advice. All recommendations and tips are welcome. If it makes a difference, I am a 21 year old guy. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm.

There is a few Irish pubs on or around bedford st.( tigin's is the only one I can remember) all close to each other.

Bobby Valentine’s Sports bar is not too far away. It used to be a scary place. Jonmc took me in there once and damn near got us all killed cuz of that loud mouth of his. I think they cleaned up a bit. So I have heard.

There's Brennan's in Shippan. Family Irish bar with decent food.

Jimmy Seaside's in the Cove. A so so bar but they often have live music.

There's the Avon Theatre cool movies in an old restored cinema.

In Cove there used to be a guy's old school barber shop with the cold drinks and playboys. I dunno if it is still there. I forgot what it was called. Ask around.

Up in North Stamford there are nature trails and some small water falls for jogging and nature hikes.

Also during the summer there is supposed to be a bunch of concerts and other events in the town square.

That's all I got. I never felt at home in Stamford while I was living there. I hope you do.

Norwalker here.

Tigin (/tuh-gheen/) is an Irish bar with a great menu, Trivia nights on Tuesdays, and a live Irish band 1st Mondays of the month.

Spazzio has Latin Fridays. The Palms has dance of varying sorts most nights of the week.

Nearby South Norwalk boasts "the 2nd-ranked chocolatier in the US" (according to Fritz, himself). Don't know if that's true, but he is damn good. Chocopologie is his shop. Knipschildt Chocolatier is the mail-order brand.

As long as you're in SoNo, step next door to Chi sushi bar. Wild Rice is a semi-nouveau Japanese restaurant chain (of 2 or 3 stores) in the area that's also outstanding, though not located in SoNo (Norwalk further north, and Westport, among others). Next door to Chi is Black Bear Bar, which has live music most nights.

The Stamford Mall isn't all that much, but Danbury Fair Mall has a 2-story carousel, and Palisades Mall (over the Tappan Zee Bridge in NY) has an indoor ferris wheel. Both are good at being malls, as well (good selection, etc).

EIP if you have any other questions.

Seconding Brennan's on Iroquois in Shippan. Crowd is/was mostly older than 21 but wide-ranging in occupation and interests, and great fun. Used to get younger and far more crowded on Saturday nights, actually.
