NYC - This WKD! Help me find all the cheap eats/drinks/clothes/music this wkd in the city!!

Hi, going to nyc for the wkd. I love finding out about new events in the city. CHEAP being the keyword. Help me find some hipster scenes on a low budget. I love concerts, the arts, bargain shopping and eating well.

The only thing I have on my agenda for this wkd so far is going to the Jewish Museum to see the Pollack/ De Kooning / American Artist exhibit, I think from the 1940s to the 1970s. I want to keep it low key this wkd, and don't really want to take another trip to the MOMA and the last time I was in NY, i was there for the Whitney Biennial. So the Jewish Museum is sorta just a quick stop, but I would love to check out more local modern artist and stuff more native to NY.

I visit ny pretty often and on another one of my trips I found this flea marketesque thing, with amazing clothing, it's every Saturday held at some school's gymnasium. I cannot recall the name of the event, but I know they do it all the time during the summer. Help me find things of that nature too.

MUSIC - I was looking up concerts, but all the free concerts I want to go to are on different dates, any cool concerts I can check out. Classic rock and indie rock are sorta my thing, so anything in the genre is good.

The Theater - so last time I was in NY everyone insisted I check out Ave Q, I missed it. When it came to Miami last month (or something like that) I attended. It was alright, but I want to see something funnier! Musical, Comedy Show, Play anything.....any suggestions??

Lastly the cheap eats/drinks --- this is not that big of a deal, but if you know something amazing, then i def want to hear about it. free boozing is totally my thing. Im not sure which museum has those friday mixers but I def want to check it out. I also had a friend go to this one japanese place that seems really fun, the atmosphere sounds excellent, apparently everyone in the restaurant is going crazy doing sake bombs, and everyone is drinking in red solo cups. the place is real classy as you can tell...lol and it totally sounds fun!!

I am open to anything and I love the feedback the people on metafilter pass out so i thought I would just bite the bullet and ask.

I don't have time to write a huge list right now (i will) but I just wanted to say -

I saw Reuben Williams for the first time this weekend at the UCB and I've never laughed harder. I go to a lot of comedy/improv shows and these guys were absolutely the greatest. Don't miss it.

Subscribe now to the Nonsense NYC e-mail list. You'll receive the list for this weekend sometime Friday afternoon.

Also, flavorpill has a lot of listings (not all are cheap/free, however). For example, there's a (free!) Beth Orton concert in the Prospect Park Bandshell on Saturday.

Check MyOpenBar for a list of bars giving away free booze.

Helpful hint: In New York, we spell it weekend.

NYC Cheap Eats Defined: Gray's Papaya. One of the few instances where the imitator surpasses the original.

Haven't been in the city for two years, and the Recession Special seems to have gone up in price, but $3.50 for two dogs and a papaya drink is still a hell of a deal.

I prefer the one on Broadway between 72nd and 73rd. That whole area's pretty boss for walking around as well.

Get a copy of "The L" magazine from.. any street corner below 32nd street. Check the section where it lists what is going on by day.

If you're willing to venture out to brooklyn, at the McCarren Park Pool the Breeders are playing a free show this Sunday.

18+ 21 to drink. Show is free, beer is not. It's in an enormous, empty public pool.

My favorite thing to do is to go to Union Square/NYPL and walk all the way up to the Gray's Papaya at 72nd/Bway.

Check out the David Byrne installation "Playing the Building" down by the Staten Island Ferry. Mammothly cool. Tremendously free admission.

Cheapo New York, FreeNYC, Newyorkology: Cheap Stuff can help here as well as the previously mentioned Brooklynvegan free concert guide.

Chelsea art galleries: today (free)
Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (cheap)
Lower East Side self-guided gustatory tour (cheap)
Time Out New York: What to do today and tomorrow
Oh My Rockness: indie rock concert list (free ones will be marked)
Flavorpill's picks for this week
Free tours and free/cheap admission (to museums)
More tours
Forgotten NY (cheap tours, suggestions of urban exploration areas)

Seconding Upright Citizens Brigade. Shows are way cheaper than other comedy clubs around town. If you're lucky, you can catch a few up and comers for $5 (I've seen the Human Giant guys there, as well as Demetri Martin and John Oliver).

For the flea market, you're probably thinking of Young Designers Market (268 Mulberry St. between Houston and Prince) Saturdays between 11am - 7pm.

Also free/cheap: walking through the Union Square Green Market, gawking at Church of St. John the Divine or Grant's Tomb, taking a walk down St. Marks Place, wandering around the West Village (say a stroll down Bleecker St.), wandering Central Park, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or around the Brooklyn promenade, drinking beers on the Staten Island Ferry, walking down Bedford Ave in Williamsburg.
