Is the rumored 88 Boadrum show happening in NYC this year?

On July 7, 2007, at 7pm, the Boredoms organized 77 Boadrum, a performance in Brooklyn of 77 drummers playing together for 77 minutes. It was the most mind-blowing show I have ever seen. There are vague rumors are going around that they're doing another show this year with 88 drummers on August 8, but I can't find any confirmation on google, Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum, JellyNYC, etc. The Boredoms' site is in Japanese, so I can't read it. I am pretty sure the show had been announced by the equivalent time last year (about 5 weeks before).

Does anyone know definitively if this is happening in NYC this summer?

(and related, is the dvd of 77 Boadrum going to be released? again, everything I can find is either rumors or in Japanese.)

Best answer: Just speculating, but I'd say no. I first read about the 77 Boadrums in May of last year, so I'd think that since I have yet to read any confirmation of one this year, it's not happening (I think the announcement last May was a call for dummers, which means the audition process was probably fairly lengthy).

The Boredoms are also now on Thrill Jockey (although I guess Vice Records still has rights to some of their releases) and so I doubt they have as much money to work with as they did with Vice, which would mean getting 88 drummers in one place would be a lot harder.

I only read about the 88 thing last year -- right after 77 Boadrums happened -- and I kind of took it to be a half-joke. And since they have no scheduled tour dates, it seems really unlikely at this point.

As for the DVD, I'd assume that Vice Records would have the rights to it, at least in the U.S., so who knows? I'd kind of assume it's probably not ever going to see the light (I expected it out by the end of last year, and that didn't happen). There are some cobbled-together DVDs that people created from YouTube videos and such. I can probably find you the name of someone who made one if you're interested.

Response by poster: Yeah, I was kind of thinking it was not happening, but then I read a recent interview with the guy who organized it last year who said he was working on it again. Figured it was worth an askme! Thanks!

Response by poster: In case anyone is still watching this question--this show IS happening!

It's at the Willamsburg Waterfront. Tickets at Brown Paper Tickets.
