Looking for advice for a luddite sex columnist who wants to start blogging professionally.

A friend of mine is interested in starting a professional blogging career from her articles on sex-advice, erotica, sex history and what-not. She's written in print for a while now but needs advice on how to best move into the digital world.

At this point I've helped her set up a blog through blogger. She's in the process of creating a website to host her articles, photos, podcasts, and eventually her blog. I'm hoping the hive-mind can help get her on her way to success. What are the best ways of promoting such a website? What kind of advice do you have for someone new to blogging?

Here is a link to her blog at the moment, Long Purple Gloves.

I think this must be about the fifteenth time in the last couple of months that someone has posted here asking how to drive traffic to their site.

The first thing your friend needs to do is read this.

1. Don't self-link here. Fastest way to get deleted into oblivion.
2. Get a domain&hosting.
3. Get a nice theme. Either a free or a paid one. Don't use the default one.
4. Write. Write. Write. Write.
5. Network (Make relevant, and not spammy, comments on other blogs, link to related posts in your posts, etc)
6. Keep writing for a couple of years.
7. ???? (Luck)
8. Profit!

Remember, this is just the opinion of one person. So take it for what you think it's worth.

Don't use Blogger. Blogger just irks me. That comments page that doesn't look like the site is the biggest thing. Also, the majority of Blogger blogs that I've seen where I have to use my Google or OpenID login, neither of which I want to use for various reasons.

If she's serious, get real hosting and host your own blog. WordPress, TypePad, Joomla, anything really.

Other than that, write consistently. It doesn't have to be every day. In fact, that could end up being a bad plan if she can't keep up with it. A few times a week is fine if her stuff is good enough, and if she does it at the same time fo the week.

But seriously, Blogger? Ick!
