Looking for Writer's Travel Research Resources on the Web

I'm a fiction writer that does tons of research, and while I've found tons of great net resources out there for generally describing countries, regions, cities, etc., what would really be useful are websites where I can connect with people in those areas -- people that don't mind being pestered by questions like, "Is this tiny road outside this tiny village gravel or blacktop" -- things like that.

I've had some luck with the user-submitted pics on Google Earth, but that can be hit or miss.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I've found people on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forums helpful for that sort of thing.

Thanks, Changeling. Doesn't look like my question caught a lot of attention, but I appreciate your idea.
