Question: Places to stay in Bisbee and Tucson?

Affordable places to stay in Bisbee and Tucson, AZ?

I know everybody loves The Shady Dell in Bisbee, but we'd like to be downtown in walking distance of restaurants and shops. Also, bonus points for somewhere to stay in Tucson that has character and is locally owned. No kids or pets to worry about, but the budget is an issue.

I don't know much about the price but some friends stayed at this place in Bisbee, where all the hotel "rooms" are actually renovated Airstream trailers, and they raved about how fun and kitschy it was. (It's the first picture/story on the page).

The Hotel Congress in Tucson is fairly inexpensive, centrally located, and has tons of charm and character. It has a pretty good rock club, too, depending on your tastes.

http://www.discoverbisbee.com/accom_hotels.htm

There are some good places listed there. My friends parents own a brewery in Bisbee and a bed and breakfast type thing, if I run into them tonight I'll ask them the name.

Other places in Tucson to consider: The Roadrunner Hostel & Inn (downtown) or the Peppertrees B & B (close to UA campus).

The Hotel Congress has a really nice little restaurant, too, and no problem finding good vegetarian fare there. And in the summer months -- I'm assuming that this has already kicked off but call and find out -- in the summer months it's exactly half off the tourist season prices.

There isn't television in any of the rooms, just a radio -- nice. No A/C in any rooms either but the high ceilings and the ceiling fans make it work fine. The rock club sucks IMO but I live in Austin, I'm spoiled -- it's a yawner. That said, they do book some good acts from out of town; it's hit or miss. Make sure to ask for a room on the other side of the hotel if you're noise sensitive, as the club is loud. As in -- LOUD.

I've stayed at Inn at the Oaks and Mayberry's Place, both owned by the same folks. I can't recommend them enough, they're immaculately maintained and James bent over backwards to make sure we had a great stay. Inn at the Oaks was our favorite because you're at the top of the mountain and have access to a ton of hiking trails and wildlife right off the back patio. We ended up spending more time bird watching than touristing because it was so darn tranquil. Unfortunately it's not within walking distance of downtown, unless your last name happens to be Hillary or Norgay.

Mayberry's place, on the other hand, is right at the top of downtown. It was an easy (read: invigorating) walk to all of the galleries and restaurants. The best part is you're basically getting an apartment for what you'd pay for a hotel room, and believe me those overstuffed couches in the living room are heaven after trekking up and down the mountain all day.

I'll 5th the Hotel Congress in Tuscon. The cafe downstairs has a good breakfast (the homemade granola is divine).

We stayed at the Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee (I'm a fan of claw feet tubs) and it was nice. I think if we go back (and I hope we do), I'd like to try the Shady Dell Trailer Park.

Definitely the Hotel Congress. I hope you aren't planning to visit over the next few months - it's close to high summer and it's way to hot at the moment. Yesterday it was 103 F and not a cloud in the sky. Nobody goes outside after 10 AM if they can avoid it. We're all early risers here - anything that needs to get done outside is done very early and everyone's inside by mid-morning.
