Question: Tell me about Xilitla/Las Pozas

Has anyone ever visited Xilitla, Mexico? I am trying to plan a vacation specifically to enjoy Las Pozas, but I am finding the info on the web a bit scarce. I've pretty much read everything I could find on google including talking to the people at el Castillo, but I am looking for personal accounts and suggestions of how long to plan on staying, what else to do while I'm down there, and answers to questions I haven't thought to ask. I will be coming from Austin if that helps, and right now I am thinking about going round October/November. Thanks.

I've been there once. I went with a photography class on college, we arrived there early and left on the evening. To be honest, I'd heard that it was mindblowing, but I didn't find it so. It's interesting, decayed and I had enough for a day. However, I didn't know there were pozas and I didn't bring a swimming suit. Maybe I would liked it more if I could swim. It was a great place to take photos, though.

We made a tour through some towns (Franciscan missions) in the Queretaro sierra. They are very small towns lost in the mountains, some of them didn't have cellphone reception, but there are public phones and bottled water everywhere :) We stayed in Misión Hotels in Jalpan and Concá. They are Colonial style hotels, about 3 stars, nothing fancy but they are safe and clean.

I didn't know about el Castillo, but it looks nice and it's pretty cheap. It's a humid area, and there are a lot of bugs, so avoid staying there if you are squeamish.

You could arrive to the Mexico City airport or Toluca airport, and travel through Queretaro, staying at the Franciscan missions, or take a plane to San Luis Potosí from Mexico City, Toluca or Monterrey. Xilitla is in the border between Queretaro and SLP.

I think the climate will be nice in October or November, at most a bit chilly at times.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!
