I fell in love with "Frontier Psychiatrist" by The Avalanches all over again this week. Can you recommend similar songs or artists, particularly with that amusing juxtaposition of voice samples as part of the track?

I would recommend nearly anything on Kid Koala's "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" particularly "Barhopper 2."

Yeah, Kid Koala's a great suggestion. Also, while it's not quite as sampletastic and a tiny bit more IDM-y, that Avalanches album always reminds me of the album Musipal by Wagon Christ (aka Luke Vibert). Here's the first track.

If you are loving the Avalanches, you will probably dig some People Like Us stuff. She has lots of stuff to download and an always interesting WFMU show/podcast.

It's worth pointing out that the DJ's in J5 that actually do these tracks were Cut Chemist and Nu Mark. Their solo material should be right up your alley. In the same vein, DJ shadow has a few vocal sample heavy tracks and is often mentioned in the same breath. The Number Song comes to mind.

Not particularly funny, but William S. Burroughs and the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy collaborated on "Spare Ass Annie" and it is awesome.

Plus -- on the opposite end -- check out some Wayne & Shuster! They're a classic comedy duo, smarter by half than almost anyone else of their generation.
