Bypassing my work proxy.

My work is boring and I wish I could have access to facebook and flickr.

Is there a way I can run a software on my machine to let me access facebook?
Right now I just VNC in my PC and open firefox.
But back in the days I had this "analogx port mapper" that would let me map an address to a specific port, but that was years ago at school and it doesn't work now.

Install the CacheIt! extension in Firefox. Then use the default Coral CDN cache. That's what some people I know use at work to bypass their firewall.

Also, you can test whether Coral CDN works before installing the extension by appending .nyud.net to the end of the URL, e.g. www.flickr.com.nyud.net.

Just keep in mind that you might be caught, and you might get in trouble. Maybe check your employee handbook to see what'll happen to you. I wouldn't want to risk my job just so I can check my facebook wall.

If you have access to a machine running an SSH server somewhere you can use PuTTY to securely tunnel your traffic through that. It has a graphical menu and everything.

PuTTY has a GUI, but the command would be something like

ssh -L 8080:facebook:80 -l user

Where 8080 will be a port opened on your local machine that will magically act as though it is port 80 on facebook's server.

2nding pete0r. You're asking to get fired for violating company policies.

Buy yourself an Iphone, blackberry or even a TREO that allows you to do web-browsing at your job. Trying to go over a firewall is serious and will provide your company for solid grounds for firing.

You might be able to get to the mobile version of facebook - a friend's company forgot to block that url, and it seems like a simple mistake to make (http://m.facebook.com) -- but it's a limited version. Worth a shot -- and a little bit less liable to get you in trouble than doing something hinky.

Nthing iPhone or other portable device. That's how I access facebook (and some of my colleagues - via my iPhone - too).
